#salute to The Natural Four, a soul group from Oakland that rocked the charts in the 70s. They started out with a local hit “I Thought You Were Mine” in 1969, then signed with Curtis Mayfield’s label and scored their biggest hit “Can This Be Real” in 1973. They released three albums on Curtom, all produced by Leroy Hutson, another soul legend. They were one of the finest vocal groups from the Bay Area, blending smooth harmonies and funky grooves. Further listening recommendations if you want to listen to more like Monday’s pick for Record of the Week, ’Songs in the Key of Life’ (1976) from Stevie Wonder! Doin’ it Right… (1973) from Mike James Kirkland, largely overlooked upon it’s release (on Mike and his brother Robert’s own label Bryan Records) it eventually found its home amongst collectors and crate diggers later reissued in 1999 by Luv n’ Haight - sampled by Pink Siifu and covered by John Legend and The Roots (“Hang On In There” from his first record of the same name) and legacy that speaks for itself especially from an independent release from the seventies, Kirkland’s vocals are so distinctive it’s hard to argue that he wouldn’t have a similar place in the pantheon to Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder if exposed to a similar sized audience. Heaven Right Here on Earth (1975) by The Natural Four, picked up by previously mentioned Curtis Mayfield’s label Curtom Records (check out Curtom Soul Trippin’ - Baby Huey, Linda Clifford and Leroy Hutson) pound for pound one of the best soul labels around, even if you only counted most of Mayfields own classics, it’s fair to say The Natural Four had more exposure than Kirkland, but still I think this is one of the great overlooked Soul records of the Seventies, great harmonies, tracks and production, what more do you need? One to One (1977) from Syreeta, it feels easy to sum up Syreeta Wright in partnerships, marriage and collaborations with Stevie Wonder, most commercially successful with Billy Preston and on this record, more of an equitable partnership with Leon Ware and Curtis Robertson Jr (Wonder also provides production on Harmour Love, which is either the best or the worst track on the record dependant on your mood) I personally think this is Syreeta’s best record with an amazing supporting cast, Greg Phillinganes (told you), David T. Walker, Chuck Rainey, Ray Parker Jr (yeah that one), Michael Sembello and thee Gary Bartz. On February 4th, 2004, 20 years ago today, the homie Baba Diop and I launched the Soulpower project at @ferryultragram’s @palo.hannover club in Germany. It’s hard to believe it’s been this long, but time doesn’t lie! What we created as a monthly concert and dance party series providing a platform for unsung soul legends and DJ’s spinning rare funk 45s rapidly evolved into a globally operating event-, booking-, music production- and artist management agency. In 14 years, we put on more than 400 shows in more than 50 cities in 20 countries on four continents, from Northern Europe to North Africa to the United States, Mexico, Japan and Australia, and I played close to 800 DJ gigs worldwide under the Soulpower banner before retiring the brand in 2018. What I am most proud of is helping many soul legends get back into the spotlight before sending them off into a dignified retirement. Most of these artists are now gone, but I will always cherish the memories we made together and appreciate the trust that they put in our work. Managing the careers of artists like the Impressions, Lyn Collins, Marva Whitney, Gwen McCrae and Martha High was one of the greatest honors of my life, and I will always treasure the many friendships I’ve made all over the world during that time (and swipe left for some pictures).
