Today we’re highlighting one of our previous projects: They Came Before Us A project in which we take a deeper dive into the women of colour who made history, who we don’t really learn about in schools and the history books. This is something that needs to change, which is why TCBU was created. In our previous exhibition, one historical figure we looked at was Catalina De Cardones, Lady-in-waiting to Tudor Queen Catherine of Aragon. Catalina migrated from Spain to London with Catherine of Aragon. She became Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen. She was known as one of the main trusted ladies-inwaiting to Queen Catherine of Aragon. We are often taught about King Henry VIII and his wives in school, but rarely taught about black women within Tudor history. Being a lady-in-waiting meant that she was the main person that advised and attended to the Queen, the role itself was very high profile which meant Catalina was seen as a noblewoman within society. The Little Rock Nine were a group of nine African American students enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Their enrollment was followed by the Little Rock Crisis, in which the students were initially prevented from entering the racially segregated school by Orval Faubus, the Governor of Arkansas. Thank You Ernest Green, Minnijean Brown, Elizabeth Eckford, Thelma Mothershed, Melba Pattillo, Gloria Ray, Terrence Roberts, Jefferson Thomas, and Carlotta Walls for your bravery. Earlier this year we took the opportunity to stop and pay respects to those no longer in this world. Though their bodies be stilled, their voices are still carried by the wind through the grass and the trees. I wish we could have visited Chief Standing Bear’s memorial statue as well. But, both dad and I were nursing leg injuries and didn’t think the walk up the hill path would have been smart. There is also a very interesting learning path which you can walk. I highly recommend it. Learn something, give respect to those who came to this land long before us.

🗣I let you all know yesterday that I’d be posting some heavy hitters in the real estate industry who paved the way for me and others as a way to celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth this year...up first the “FATHER OF HARLEM”... Mr. Philip A. Payton Jr also known as “the father of Harlem” was an influential real estate leader who helped pave the way for generations of black New Yorkers to be able to reside in desirable neighborhoods away from the horrors of racial violence. Payton Jr. famously stated “the very prejudice which has worked against us can be turned and used for our profit”. This strategy was first used to settle a dispute between two property owners on a white only block in a neighborhood on Manhattan’s upper west side in 1905 when a white building owner chose to invite a black family to live in one of their buildings. As a result many white residents left the area. Payton Jr. capitalized on the fleeing of these residents to purchase the building at a discount. This strategy led Philip A Payton Jr. along with the help of a team of like minded real estate investors to buy properties at scale in uptown New York City and was responsible for creating what would later become the cultural capital of black America. Reflections on Fete Gede: “They are not buried here. None of my blood relatives are buried in my home state. Yet that has not stopped me from making lasting, powerful, magickal, connections to women, who have gone before me, namely the Divine Marie Laveau and a Black woman from Pioneer times, who is buried in a cemetery, near and dear to me, which is close to my home. Before each of their graves, I have knelt. I have poured my heart and soul out to them. I have left offerings. I have done ceremony and asked for their help, with issues that weighed heavy on my heart. And each time I have wept and asked for help upon their graves, they have answered me, and given the help I was seeking, openly and graciously. And upon my asking, I have kept my promise and returned to their graves, in gratitude, to leave offerings of thanksgiving for their spiritual guidance, protection and assistance. For not all of us are blessed with ancestors to whom we can call upon at their gravesites. Not all of us have that blessed grandmother, auntie or uncle, at whose knee we can sit and soak up their magickal and powerful wisdom. Some of us have to create our families in the here and now and find those ancestors to whom we have a deep and spiritual link. I am one of those people, and I am forever grateful to those who have gone before me, to whom I can turn and pour water to daily, as part of my ancestor veneration and ritual. So during this time of year when we celebrate the darkness, and our loved ones on the other side of veil, during Fet Gede, Samhain, and Halloween, let us do it with glad hearts for the spiritual connections we have with those who answer our call, whether we be related to them by blood or simply by love” . . Today is a poignant day. I had to take time to get this post together. Today, Maya Angelou would have been 90. I cried so much when she passed. I got to visit her house shortly after she died and I bought a baking pan from her kitchen that I cherish. Her home was dated inside, not extravagant at all. And it spoke volumes to me about what she held dear, so while others were buying the more expensive items from her home, I bought a baking pan, because Maya Angelou was complex in her simplicity. . . Then I think of Dr. King who was murdered 50 years ago today. I asked my dad this past Sunday if he remembers where he was when it happened. Tears fell down his face as he told me that he was standing in formation when he heard the news. I watched rage ball my daddy's hands into fists as he told me about the white man next to him who laughed when he heard the news. Daddy said he grabbed that man by the lapels of his uniform but let him go because he was in the army and could have been seriously punished for starting a fight. That anger and hurt hibernates in the pit of my daddy's stomach like a sleeping bear. . . . Maya Angelou made me fall in love with the sound of the written word. Dr. King gave me the audacity to dream dreams unrestrained by the color of my skin. May they both rest in power. Indigenous people in what is now Illinois built this large mound, once the center of a city of 10,000-20,000 people, by digging and carrying basket after basket of soil over a period of about 250 years. Grandmaster Joao Alberto Barreto is one of the most important figures in Brazilian jiu jitsu history, He is a red belt under Grandmaster Helio Gracie, Grandmaster Joao Alberto is well known for defending Jiu Jitsu and the Gracie family name in many no holds barred fights during the 1950’s. His official fight record during his professional career is, undefeated. He was also the Vice President of the first Jiu Jitsu Federation, having helped develop the rules of Jiu Jitsu at a time when Jiu Jitsu as a sport was just starting. He leaned Jiu Jitsu from his older brother Carlos and became an expert at an early age fighting across Brazil defending the Gracie name throughout the 1920's, 30's and 1940's. After disputing the Gracie Diet and other issues with his brothers he parted ways and continued on his own.
