Happy Monday &$@! I figured that a Monday would be a wonderful day to send this out to the world. Success does not come without a challenge, victory without a battle, and prosperity without despair. In the onset of so many initial sessions, or during their consultations, people will share, they are at the end of their rope, they don't know what else to do, or this is their last resort, in entering into therapy with me. Now, first, I make light of the sentiment by commenting on how much time they would have saved had they considered me first, but secondly, I offer the solace that they have successfully demonstrated how tenacious and resilient, how tough they are. Every moment of any day is a great place to invoke the reset button in your mind and for your life. Adaptability and flexibility are key characteristics to learning and surviving if you reflect on the teaching moments in your life. Even as simple and complex as the learning of the alphabet was a matter of reset, readjust, and restarting until the strange shapes and characters became attached to a sound symbol. If you doubt your accomplishments, go ahead and attempt to read another nations alphabet system to reaffirm what you have done. โก It is always my hope that I am not someone's last resort, but I am still honoured that the Universe has offered me as a resort for the guide to change. MASK OF OรINN Something different, very different. For some time my work has been meditative and votive. For me it is an expression and exploration of my religiosity, a means of navigating spiritual experiences. Behind the scenes it is ritualistic and ceremonial, to varying degrees. I find myself singing and chanting and praying as I draw - and the wall between drawing, art-making, and personal religious practice is dissolving. And so I find myself exploring performance. Masking is a huge part of various Pagan traditions and my personal practice. I have two personal masks I use, both of which I made myself. But this was different. This was special. This mask I made for my part accompanying @ashantihare at their @rammuseum performance last month. It is an Odin/Oรฐinn/Wodan mask that brought together personal gnosis and historical/archaeological research. Odin goes by many names, or kennings - one of which is Grimnir (which means masked or hooded one). Historically I drew upon theories made by Neil Price and Paul Mortimer in their paper 'An Eye for Odin...' (European Journal of Archaeology, Vol 17, Iss 3, 2014) in which they point out very compelling evidence that the Sutton Hoo helmet was potentially an Odin mask. Other things like pendants from the Gnezdovo hoard were very stylistically inspiring (the last images in this post). It is adorned with Runes, symbols old and more modern, and prayers in Old Norse - written in historically appropriate runes. Now, I wish I could do it in one take, but the reality is I canโt. I stumble on my words, and I want it to be perfect. The honest answer is that the first take would have been fine. Some of my handmade rattles. I love making rattles; it's a process in many phases over many days. Every rattle is the result of hours of work, different materials and artisan techniques and some really strong hand muscles ๐. When you've visited my stand at a spiritual or fantasy fair, you know I can talk about them for hours, but today let's focus on the hide. Most of the rattles I make are 'container' rattles; a rawhide ball filled with rattling material, attached to a handle from wood, bone or antler. The rawhide I use is acquired as scrap material from an artisan shamanic drum maker. I like the idea of using every last bit of a hide. For that reason you might find some 'imperfections' in the appearance of my rattles; the scrap parts of hide I work with were of course not the best parts of the hide. And when I draw the shape of the rattle containers on it, I do so in the most economical way, so I can get the most out of one piece of hide, which means I also use the parts with blemishes or dimples. I wouldn't want to do it any other way. I love working with the 'underdog' parts of hide, the scrap pieces that were otherwise thrown away. In working with these parts, I find my way to honor and respect the animals this hide once belonged too. And for the esthetics; I love the authentique, and sometimes even rustique, results the 'imperfections' give. Every rattle is a unique item. I can and will never do exactly the same twice. Most of the rattles I make are made for selling at fairs or of course via @seawolf.shop (webshop opening soon!). Every time I begin to think that I have said everything I have to say about flying ointments, and that maybe there are more efficient means to achieve what has been written about them. I am hit with a lightning strike of inspiration that blows the doors off of my current conceptions of these preparations. It is a reminder that over 600 years of people writing about these formulations, that we still have very little understanding, as to their mechanism of action, preparation and their full potential. There are many ways to achieve trans states and spirit flight. However, there is some unquestionably important, yet to be found here. I am currently working on putting together the notes for my next lecture, and quickly, realizing that the deeper I go, the more there is yet to discover. I have no idea where the concept of the heart having a mind of its own derived, but do acknowledge that there is a very strong faction in our brains that fixates on desires, wants, and beliefs. When we speak of emotional healing, it generally addresses our issues and incongruity between the protective body gaurd part of our minds and the one that is more emotionally engaged. So, how do we promote healing when one part of your brain directs your thoughts to remembering the hurts and betrayals of events gone by or whispering incessantly regarding the dangers and judgments of your future choices? As with all good battles, a good dose of adrenaline is involved in working its magic on the body systems and calling on the amygdala to take its rightful place on top. The ability to divine -- to see into the future, or into possible futures, is one of the core tools of the witch. Around the world and throughout time peoples have divined for information in a myriad of ways, from watching the flight of birds across the sky to reading tarot cards, runes, and ogham staves. There are as many techniques for divining as there are divination tools; ultimately our divination tools can become keys into knowledge, points of connection used to listen to the voices of the universe and its divinity. Our tools can help us to open ourselves towards hearing those messages more clearly, drawing them down to us where we can sift through, and offering ourselves and others the guidance that is sought. In this class, rather than focusing on any one divinatory tool or technique, we offer instead experiential tools which may be used with many different divinatory tools, and that are intended to better help us open to the voices of the universe. While we will discuss and explore existing divinatory system, we will also each build a unique individual system using a variety of magical tools and techniques, to help us more deeply develop our own divinatory process and associations. This workshop is open to anyone, whether they have experience with none, one or many divinatory tools, we will not, however be stopping to explain basic magical technology, so our Elements of Magic class or similar would help.
