Hans - Vittangi, Sweden • • Hans is 50 years old and a professional photographer, who has been shooting for most of his life. He first joined the Swedish army but always had more of an interest in film and tv, saying that he loves meeting new people & that the job is never the same. Basically, Hans has travelled to many places around the globe for his work. But is also a hunter, a licensed skydiver, has a house in Stockholm, as well as cabinin his hometown & a lakeside cabin, with 4 dogs & 4 snowmobiles. Hans is very much a go-getter, very direct and sometimes blunt in quite a humorous way. For a 50 year old he runs around like a madman and revels in what he does. A colleague once stated, “Hans is the type of guy to go fishing with dynamite.” He generously offered for us to spend our last day in his cabin in Vittangi. The cabin itself was amazing, very rustic and traditional with loads of ornaments. Despite temperatures reaching negative 40, the cabin was always so warm & homely. We took the snowmobiles to the lake cabin, had a bbq, drank beer, did ice water fishing and just chatted until the evening. To top it off, we had the incredible experience of seeing the aurora borealis, directly above us and so vividly. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. To end the night, we bonded whilst listening to his vinyl player, and drinking whisky. Hans was incredibly kind and generous to us. Really giving a memorable last couple of days in Sweden which I will forever be grateful for. Afghan Turkmen woman, April 2024. I took this photograph inside an old yurt her father had installed in the middle of the family compound. Today, most traditional Turkmen people are settled in adobe villages but some of them proudly keep their nomadic yurt made of vegetable canes, fabric and closed with a beautifuly carved wooden door. Inside the yurt Turkmen women cook and spend leisure time chatting and playing with their kids. This entire image is about texture, about aging, about a face becoming a map of life. I love how her hands and clothing are as weathered as the wood behind her. Like the wood, her presence and habitual morning prayers are sturdy, useful and provide comfort. I think of her, living high up in the Himalayans steep snow-covered mountains where the temperature on this cold morning I recall was 10 degrees. In the folds of her well-lived in clothing and in the dwelling behind her, there is a sacred resonance. In Tibetan villages, people have few articles of clothing or material possessions demonstrating wealth. Yet this woman passes the precious mala beads and prays without anxiety in the glowing, Rembrandt-like splash of sunlight warming her body every day. I recall the man I was traveling with, a veterinarian and my translator who later became a friend, speaking to me about life in this tiny village where he was born. While we were chatting, the woman heard his voice. Instantly, her eyes began to shed tears. She was blind and yet despite years of separation, she recognized the tone of his voice. She was so happy he had returned. There was a compelling sense of community and of family in this tiny hamlet of roughly ten homes. The landscape is craggy, with treacherous mountains and a severe climate causing the small village to remain isolated. Despite that, love and familiarity causes the families to take care of each other. This woman was one of the few who never married and therefore had no children to care for her as an elder. Loved and attended to by the entire community, the cracks on her face speak of a life led with purpose. A Khmer monk prostrates himself in front of a Buddhist shrine. His reflection on the marble floor was rather meaningful given the importance of self reflection and self examination in Buddhism and many other religions. This particular monk is also quite artistic. He painted all the murals that you see inside this particular temple near the Vietnam-Cambodia border. Budhist temples are often very colorful for several reasons. The colors themselves carry symbolic meaning, while the murals serve as educational tools, depicting stories from Buddhist scriptures and teachings.
