We've had some challenging weeks with my mom requiring emergency hospitalization. After some very rough days, she began to improve. She was able to go home two days ago and will hopefully continue to recover. When a crisis like that happens, I continue working on stories and client projects, but I definitely lose motivation to post on social media. Writing adventure-travel articles in a hospital room is surreal enough, but posting adventure or travel pics is too much. --- Pictured here is the 500+ foot tunnel at Tunnel Hill in So IL. I hopped off my bike inside there last month, trying to get a silhouette shot of some type. No bikers passed through, but these ladies came from the far side and were singing to hear the echoes. Suddenly, they realized there was someone else in the middle of the dark tunnel with them. Then they got very silent and nervous, so I said a friendly hello and explained I was shooting photos. I think they decided I wasn't a serial killer, because they began to sing again as they walked toward the other side.
This weekend I ran and finished Tunnel Hill 50 miler/ 80km in 9:57:28. The journey is learning that pain, like love, is simply something to surrender to….. It was slow come back but I made it. I am ultrarunner again 🙌🏻 Pics: 1. Before the start, I got only 3hr sleep night before but was feeling good and excited. 2. Only time took phone out to take a pic at mile 46. Very good feeling knowing finish is close. But those 4 miles are very loooong 😅 3. With a race director Steve Durbin 4. Lazarus Lake was there too 5. At the aid station @ mile 27. Fueled mostly with Spring Energy gels, Scrach lab gummies, bananas, oranges, pickles.

103122 Tunnel Hill Trail '22 My fav photo from the trip, though maybe nobody else's. Part of teaching Sam to be off-leash is putting a "drag leash" on him. So he made a mark like this for basically all 47 miles of the trail. Every day when we'd get to the end of the section, I'd ride the bike back to the van, following our footsteps and the line he'd made. There was something heart warming and a little sad about it, like being in a room where the party had been an hour before. Such a little dog to make such a big mark on the world. Back to photoblogging tomorrow.

The 9.3-mile section between Tunnel Hill and Vienna crosses trails already known to outdoor recreationists: the River-to-River Trails, which extends from the Mississippi to the Ohio River; the unmarked American Discovery Trails, which in southern Illinois follows back roads and some of the River-to-River Trail; the U.S. 76 Bicycle Route, a part of the TransAmerica Bike Route; and the Trail of Tears, the primary route the Cherokee Indian tribe took in the winter of 1838-39 during their forced move from the Great Smokies to Oklahoma. 12 APR 62’ the Andrew’s Raid brought the first Union soldiers into north Georgia and led to an exciting locomotive chase, the only one of the war. The adventure lasted just seven hours, involved about two dozen men, and as a military operation, ended in failure. Tunnel Hill was the scene of much activity during the war. Goods and supplies going from the Western Frontier via Chattanooga to the Atlantic Coast had to pass through this 1,447-foot long tunnel. An engineering marvel when it was finished in 1850, the tunnel was built by two separate parties who started on either side of Chetoogeta Mountain and dug to the center. It remained in use until 1920 when a larger tunnel was dug next to it. The oldest tunnel in the southeastern U.S. — the first south of the Mason-Dixon line — it was contested at least four times between Confederate and U.S. forces in 1864, and U.S. Gen. William T.Sherman began the Atlanta Campaign on May 7, 1864 by seizing Tunnel Hill, where Confederates had maintained a camp after the Battles of Chattanooga.
