WASP #282 - We Are Charlie Lawrence, Boldly Targeting the 50-Mile World Record and Nailing It is up! Boulder-based Charlie Lawrence last month broke the 50-mile world record previously held by veteran ultrarunner and current UTMB champion Jim Walmsley. Charlie is 28, self-coached, and his previous longest run had been 35 miles. He completed the distance in 4:48:21 at the Tunnel Hill 50 Mile, averaging 5:46 per mile. I like that Charlie didn’t run it on a track or in an artificial environment, but in an actual race, on a mostly gravel surface with some hills. Charlie, a native of Foley, MN, got the inspiration to challenge the record, which he was actually confident he would secure, from two-time Olympian Des Linden after helping pace her to a 50K world record. After sitting out most of 2022 with a sacral stress fracture, Charlie left his running group and set out on his own, upped his volume into the 140 mi. per week range, and added some beastly track workouts as well. Charlie, who will line up to run the Olympic Trials Marathon this Feb., feels that the speedwork he does for 26.2 miles definitely helps him at longer distances as well. It’s a fun story as Charlie rose from a decent high school runner who took two Minn. state titles in the 3200, to being a contributing all-Big Ten performer for the U. of Minnesota, to being good enough to run in the Olympic Trials marathon in 2020 yet not threaten to make the team, to busting through with a world record at a totally new distance for him. We hit on everything here including his pacing strategy, his fueling, his extraordinary focus, his upcoming goals, and even the stories behind his tattoos. We'd like to do a little bragging on a guy who would never brag on himself. A little birdie (or, Big Sexy Jen Metcalf) spilled the beans that our friend, David Eckardt, who ran the Tunnel Hill 100 in 16 hours, 30 minutes, and 17 seconds was the 2nd fastest 100 mile time in his age group in the United States this year! After he finished and grabbed a few hours of sleep, he could be found back at the finish line the next morning cheering on runners as they achieved their goals. Tunnel Hill 100 Race Recap Miles 91-100 As we got to the aid station, Matt came running up to Melissa and I and said my parents were on the phone. At this point I knew I was going to finish and after being up for over 24hrs, my emotions were all over the place. I knew what my parents might say to me and at that time I couldn't hear it. I told Matt we gotta go, bc immediately I could feel my emotions take over and I still had 9 miles to get through. Thankfully from the tunnel to the finish line it was mostly downhill. So I grabbed some pancakes at the aid station and on we went! I never thought during the last 9 miles I would be running or ultra shuffling as much as I did. Melissa was the best hype woman as she kept telling me this is all my training paying off. We would run to the bends and then walk some. And during this entire time I kept saying to Melissa " like we're really doing this, this is really happening". She kept telling me how amazing I was doing and kept praising me. It was exactly what I needed to hear and I'm forever grateful to her and getting me to the finish line. We finally got to the last aid station and ask them how far away we were and they said 2.6 miles... Which feels like an eternity. Sara came and met us with probably less than 1 mile to go. Once We got closer to the finish line, Melissa and Sara ran ahead to get my picture as I crossed the finish line. I ran through that finish line with the biggest smile on my face. It's hard to put into words exactly how I felt in that moment but it's something that I will never forget. Melissa gave me the biggest hug and immediately we both started crying. I have never finished a race as strong as this one! I'm honestly still in shock in what I accomplished and I'm so proud of myself! ❤️ The biggest thank you to my crew, @nicolapfadt @maltbysara @melissa_keefe @ellomattyval . They made sure I was getting enough calories, were my biggest cheerleaders, and I could not have done this without their support. #wepartyweird

Tunnel Hill Race Recap Part 2 Miles 51-90 I spent almost 40mins in the warming tent before heading back out to finish the last half of the race. I did a complete outfit change, got my legs rolled out, ate potato soup, and bandaged up my big toe on my right foot. I felt some pressure on my toe a few miles earlier... I figured it would turn into a blister but wanted to at least add some cushion so that it wouldn't bother me as much and would relieve some of the pressure I was feeling. Danny and I headed out together for the next 26ish miles. We stuck to doing intervals but switched to 3:2. Nighttime aid Stations were even better! Give me all the hot things, and a huge thank you to them for having lots of vegetarian options! They had veggie broth, grilled cheese, and I was eating anything that was warm. At one of the aid stations I decided to put my leggings on bc we were running a bit less and my legs were starting to get cold. We got back to the start/finish, sat in the warming tent, and I had more potato soup and got rolled again. When we headed back we asked to have a pacer so @melissa_keefe headed out with us. We were doing a lot of walking and at that time I still felt like running and staying with my intervals. I made the decision to start back up with my intervals. The first aid station was only 2.6 miles away, so @maltbysara was going to pick up Danny and Melissa would catch up with me. When Melissa caught up with me we started the slow incline up to the tunnel. I was walking a little more to conserve my energy. I wanted to be able to run at the turnaround point since it was mostly going to be downhill. I put the onesie on at the next aid station bc the temps really started to drop and I couldn't stay warm. It was a 2 mile out and back from that aid station and then I would be in the home stretch. During the out and back, I did a lot of walking, more than I wanted too, but we could tell there was still an incline. By the time we made it back to the aid station right before the tunnel I knew I only had 10 miles left!! Tunnel Hill 100 Race recap Miles 1-50: I had a game plan of running my 8:2 intervals for as long as I could. I used an interval timer so that my watch battery wouldn't drain. From the start/finish you go out to the right about 13 miles, come back, then go to the left about 12 miles and come back. You did that twice. In my hydration vest I had water and caffe latte flavor hammer perpetum, which has about 180 calories and caffeine. I knew going into this race I would need help with my nutrition and staying on track with getting enough calories. That's where my amazing crew came in!! I would eat my honey stingers while I was out on the trail and drink my calories. At the aid stations, which were loaded with goodies, I ate grilled cheese, bean burritos, cheese quesadillas, peanut butter pretzels, pickle juice, grapes, oranges, and chips. I would switch out my hydration, chat with my crew, grab food on the go and walk and eat after each aid station stop. Going into the race my hip was super tight from my 50 mile training run a month before. I was doing a lot of background work with my PT to make sure I made it to race day healthy. I would feel a sharp pain in my right hip every once in a while. I kept telling myself that I could do this. My mind stayed positive and I tell you what, don't underestimate a new running playlist!! I had all new jams and that probably also kept my mind busy and positive. I did switch my intervals around mile 32 to 4:2 intervals. I wanted to Walk a little more to keep my legs fresh for the rest of the race. I had a few instances where I had a sharp pain in the outside of my left knee, which was strange bc it never happened during training. Again, I let my mind not go to any dark place and never once let myself believe that I wasn't going to finish. I chatted with another runner for awhile and he nicknamed me smoked Gouda bc I was telling him about my favorite cheeses. 🧀 Found out his company is building a hotel in my city. What a small world! Danny and I caught up with each other at around mile 40 or so. My brain didn't really keep up with miles and I didn't look at my watch and I think that helped pass time... More to come!

Fifty miles. It’s still hard for me to even wrap my head around how far that is on foot. I’m so incredibly proud of @stephinthewilderness and @jeffbarbary for crushing it out in the middle of nowhere Illinois. I spent most of the day traveling to aid stations and finding photo spots along the way, and making sure these two kept moving and got calories in. When it got dark and they were allowed a pacer, I took off into the dark to try to find them and run back in with them. 6.6 miles later when I finally saw their headlamps, I think I hurt just as much as they did. My body hadn’t kept anything in for over 24 hours and I knew less than a mile in that it was going to be a bad time. So my pacing duties really just turned into another person along for the final 6 miles of a suffer fest. But now that the hurt is starting to wear off for them, focus turns to next year and a 100k and 100 mile races.
