Last week, the Chester County History hosted our group for a walking tour of the Underground Railroad in West Chester. We stopped at ten different locations and heard stories about the people at each stop and how they were related to the Underground Railroad. We learned about the conductors, freedom seekers, abolitionists, and social reformers that were part of the Underground Railroad in West Chester. After the tour, the kids explored the museum which had a ton of interesting and informative hands on exhibits ranging from learning Morse code to “shopping” without buying goods made by enslaved people.

Hometown, USA - this one of mine, Rochester, NY, stands tall in honor of Black History Month: >>MANY ROADS TO FREEDOM: THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD IN ROCHESTER AND VICINITY The Underground Railroad began operating in earnest in the 1830s in Rochester and vicinity. Both black and white people managed the railroad... When Frederick Douglass moved to Rochester in 1847 to begin his abolitionist newspaper, he became one of the prime "stationmasters" on the railroad. Both his home and office were used as stations. February 1 - Black Brilliance Month Every month is an opportunity to celebrate Black brilliance, joy, and resilience. There's one Canadian town in particular that does a phenomenal job of celebrating Black history: Buxton, Ontario. Originally named the Elgin or Buxton Settlement, the village of North Buxton is of massive importance in Canadian and North American history. Why? It was the final destination on the Underground Railroad. Arriving in Buxton meant freedom. At its peak population, 2,000 people lived on the Buxton Settlement. There, they thrived. They built their own homes, ran integrated and highly respected schools, and cultivated a close-knit community that strove for excellence and gave back to others. Today, Buxton is still a small town, though the legacy that lives on through its descendants is enormously vivacious. The annual Homecoming weekend brings family from around North America back to Buxton each September. In 2024 they celebrated for the 100th time and I was fortunate to be invited. The weekend was filled with events, from concerts and dancing, to baseball and basketball tournaments, to church services, food trucks, a small business market, and a theatrical reenactment. I saw so many smiles and so many heartfelt hugs on the day I attended. If you get the chance to visit, do. Make sure to visit The Buxton National Historic Site and Museum, which is beautifully and powerfully curated. Great things come in all shapes and sizes, after all. #TravelwithTMc #Buxton #buxtonontario #buxtonhomecoming #100years #undergroundrailroad #undergroundrailroadmuseum #blackexcellence #blackhistoryeveryday #blackhistorymatters

This week I attended the Ohio Minority Supplier Development Council’s annual Business Opportunity Expo event in Cincinnati! I enjoyed a lovely evening at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center for the opening reception. If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit this powerful museum, I *highly* suggest you put it on your short list. On Tuesday, we spent the day at the Procter & Gamble HQ, engaging in learning sessions, network-building, and dealmaker meetings. During the opening panel discussion, C-suite leaders from several corporations shared their thoughts on #SupplierDiversity. 🗣️ About the importance of prioritizing supplier diversity initiatives and accountability, Mike Holland, OhioHealth System SVP of Supply Chain Services, shared, “My allyship just couldn’t be in my heart. It needed to be outward and observable.” In the afternoon, the @ohiomsdc team did a great job pairing up MBEs in meetings with buyers from their corporate partners to explore business opportunities. 🙏🏼 A big thank you to everyone who worked hard to host this event and who showed up to make it so fabulous! #MBE #MinorityOwnedBusiness #NMSDC #HispanicOwnedBusiness #Cincinnati #Cincy #FreedomCenter #UndergroundRailroadMuseum #OMSDC #OhioMSDC #MinoritySupplier @moralesgroup | @accionperformance

Underground Railroad Quilt Codes: A safe house along the Underground Railroad was often indicated by a quilt hanging from a clothesline or windowsill. These quilts were embedded with a kind of code, so that by reading the shapes and motifs sewn into the design, an enslaved person on the run could know the area’s immediate dangers or even where to head next. Bow Tie = Dress in disguise to appear of a higher status Bear Paw = Follow an animal trail through the mountains to find water and food Log Cabin = Seek shelter now, the people here are safe to speak with I can see the promise of such a system. Nimble fingers working in secret, armed with needle and thread, engaging with a visual language, doing their part for freedom. I want to believe it happened. Some do, and maybe it did, but others question the authenticity of such events. Sharon Tindall is a Virginia-based quilter, educator, and one in a tradition of contemporary quilters who design textile works inspired by this “quilt code.” “When I’m creating a quilt, I’m focused on the purpose of the quilt,” she says. “I’m thankful I am able to create something of comfort.” Tindall hopes her handmade quilts hanging in the Johnson House, a crucial station on the Underground Railroad and now a National Historic Site in Philadelphia, embody the spirit of the house and the presence of those who passed through. Built in 1768 in the heart of Germantown, Johnson House’s woodwork, flooring, and glass are all original to the house.” #undergroundrailroadmuseum #undergroundrailroadquiltcodes #undergroundrailroadconductor

Freedom 🇺🇸🇨🇦 ... with the passage of The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, thousands of escaped enslaved African Americans sought safe harbor in Canada! Many such productive persons in Michigan & Southern states used the Underground Railroad guided by secret codes & conductors (freed Blacks, white allies, abolitionist, etc.) to safe houses in Ontario, Canada. In Michigan, 14 cities were on the route - Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Cassopolis, Farmington, Jackson, Marshall, Niles, Port Huron, Schoolcraft, Vandalia, Walled Lake, & Ypsilanti! Black History Month (February) is set aside to celebrate African American history, accomplishments, and to recognize African American contributions to the U.S. Why February? Abolitionist Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln both celebrate February birthdays. Also notable, February 1, 1960 Martin Luther King moved from Montgomery, AL to Atlanta, GA to devote more time to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) with the goal of using non-violent means to end segregation, oppression, and later express opposition to the Vietnam War. 2 of 3. The Federal architecture of Woodlawn Manor and the extensive farm was home to two prominent Quaker families and is strongly associated with the Quaker tradition in this area during the 19th century. Besides the agricultural legacy of Woodlawn Manor, the property includes the main house, stone barn, stone dairy/meathouse, log cabin, frame tenant house, gazebo, and wood-frame shed. Woodlawn Manor was also one of the puzzle pieces of the Underground Railroad escapes, and Maryland, being the most northern of the southern states, would play a significant role. #architecturelovers #19thcenturyarchitecture #federalperiod #federalarchitecture #flemishbond #brickarchitecture #agriculturalarchitecture #historichouse #historicmaryland #agriculture #maryland #photowalk #montgomerycountymd #montgomeryparks #marylandnationalcapitalparkandplanningcommission #quaker #undergroundrailroad #undergroundrailroadmuseum
