Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has unveiled an innovative application leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to oversee the distribution of water via tankers throughout the city. This technological advancement marks a significant step forward in enhancing the efficiency and transparency of water supply management in the city. Officials from the PMC have revealed that the new system, currently undergoing a trial phase, has been installed at a tanker point in Padmavati. This application provides real-time data on the entry and exit of tankers, as well as the volume of water filled and distributed by each tanker across the city. Every day, the PMC dispatches approximately 1,400 drinking water tankers to residents, encompassing both the urban area and newly incorporated villages. These tankers are sourced from private vendors who supply water at no charge, with the civic body covering the transportation expenses. Additionally, about 300 private tankers procure water from PMC tanker points at a rate of ₹666 per tanker, subsequently selling it to citizens. Shrinivas Kandul, the head of PMC's electric department, emphasised that the initiative aims to address the lack of real-time monitoring at tanker points and said , "We have deployed AI-based CCTV cameras on a trial basis at Padmavati Tanker Point. An application has been developed to enable real-time monitoring of water withdrawals from tanker points, providing insights into refill frequencies." Kandul further highlighted the potential of this technology to identify instances of water scarcity and irregularities within the tanker industry. Nandkishor Jagtap, the head of PMC's water supply department, said "This AI-powered application, coupled with existing GPS tracking systems, will enhance transparency in the water supply chain, ensuring accountability for all water distribution activities conducted by PMC." During my visit to Iraq for the “4th Baghdad International Water Conference,” I was warmly welcomed by H.E. President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid. In attendance was also H.E. Eng. Aoun Diab Abduallah, Iraq’s Minister of Water Resources. I conveyed greetings from H.E. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of Egypt to H.E. President Abdul Latif Rashid and the Iraqi citizens, wishing Iraq #progress and #prosperity. President Abdul Latif Rashid reciprocated the #greetings and expressed well wishes for continued #progress and #prosperity for the Egyptian people, emphasizing the #strong relations between both countries. President Abdul Latif Rashid highlighted the global risks of #climatechange, #desertification, and #waterscarcity, stressing on the need for enhanced #cooperation and #expertise exchange between #Egypt and #Iraq to address these #challenges, especially their impact on #agriculture, #development, and the #environment.
During my opening session at the “4th Baghdad International Water Conference” which was held under the title (Towards a better water future… better together). Acknowledging the challenges posed by #waterscarcity and #climatechange in the Arab region, I emphasized the urgent humanitarian imperative of ensuring access to #cleanwater , particularly in conflict zones. Egypt’s heavy reliance on the Nile River for water underscores the need for #sustainablemanagement practices, supported by significant investments of $10 billion in enhancing #watersystem efficiency. Advocating for basin-level water management and adherence to #internationallaw principles for equitable resource allocation, I stressed on the importance of collaboration among nations sharing transboundary #waterresources. Criticizing Ethiopia’s unilateral actions on the Nile, diplomatic solutions are essential to resolve disputes and avoid potential conflicts over water resources. Egypt’s proactive efforts, including the establishment of the African Center for Water and Climate Adaptation, aim to strengthen regional water #cooperation and promote sustainable management practices, particularly in African countries vulnerable to climate change impacts on the water sector.
