A big shout-out to all female livery company members on International Women’s Day 2024, and we can’t let the day pass without mentioning Sylvia Tutt! Sylvia Tutt became Master of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators in 1983, the first woman ever to be so distinguished by a Livery Company. Her position was matched only by the election later that year of the first female Lord Mayor of London, Lady Mary Donaldson QC. By 2023, the Livery collectively had notched up over 200 female Company Masters, across the spectrum of ancient, modern and recent Livery Companies, and the number is being incrementally added to year on year. So it is hard to envisage the Livery climate of forty years ago, when Sylvia Tutt, against odds and tradition, broke the 900 year old glass ceiling to become the very first female Master of a Livery Company. Celebrated annually on March 8th, International Women's Day honours women's achievements across social, economic, cultural and political spheres, advocating for #women's rights, gender equality, and support for #female-focused charities. The 2024 theme, "Inspire #Inclusion," emphasises the significance of #diversity and empowerment, encouraging acknowledgment of women's unique contributions, including those from marginalised communities. Taking action, we partnered with @thelordmayorsappeal for 'We Can Be'; an initiative guiding young women in career decisions by exposing them to corporate roles. This addresses the concern that 73% of girls feel “women must work harder than men to succeed”. #WeCanBe aims to increase awareness of opportunities in the professional world and highlights the value of #diverse skills and backgrounds. 16 girls joined us for a morning of activities and presentations, exposing them to a variety of roles at @makotrading, aiming to inspire. Activities covered business introductions, career pathways, interviewing dos and don'ts, a role-guessing interview game, and interactive pit trading game. The day concluded with further activities and networking at the #Guildhall. As part of the feedback received, the girls felt that they had greater insight into the diversity of roles and skills required for the corporate world, with many stating that they were now more likely to want to work in the #City. To continue the momentum, Mako's first Women’s Insight Day on the 18th April will introduce female #STEM students to #trading and #technology in financial services. Through hands-on activities and networking, we aim to encourage women to pursue careers in the City, underlining diversity's crucial role in enriching the workforce. THE PHOENIX RISES! Our history of women in Leeds ends here with THE FUTURE. I’ve spent the last few years photographing on the streets after the Covid pandemic. I wondered how this time of virus – of trauma, fear and isolation – would affect young folks whose coming of age years were spent in their bedrooms. I met the most playful, creative young people as they re-emerged. It was so life-affirming to see their values, culture and self identities worn and styled; they are all at once cool, punk, playful, sophisticated and political. My studio was often set up in empty retail spaces where, over the Covid times, businesses up and left, leaving behind shop fittings and mannequins. It all felt very apocalyptic and shocking back in 2021, seeing these cracks in society and the broken promises of consumerism laid bare. It was from these experiences that I began this new work I thought of as Phoenix Rising. I saw young people everywhere I photographed who I thought of as something reborn of this time, of the fires, chaos and uncertainty of now, from a world literally on fire. The Phoenix is an immortal bird and rises from the ashes of its ancestors. Constructing a nest of flammable materials – a bed of sticks, leaves and brush – the Phoenix strikes the match and engulfs itself in flames, a violent act that leads to a rebirth, a rising. The Phoenix is a new creature, born and also reborn, young and also ancient and sacred. What does the future look like? Fashion as signifier of culture, of values and the shared language of the self, worn, is central to my work. In the final scene the phoenix rises, a new creature. Jude wears her own vintage clothes until the last scene. For the phoenix, we asked Leeds fashion designer K Walker to dress Jude. Britain was having a cultural renaissance, the likes of which not seen since the 60s. The location for this image was an indoor skate park in south Leeds, formally a warehouse. Supposedly the toilets supposedly hadn’t been touched for 30 years. Today our WOMAN OF LEEDS Jude Kershaw is in 1977 Leeds and woman are fighting back - RECLAIM THE NIGHT - These marches were organised, urban, women's night-time march against male violence protesting against rape and violence against women. The Leeds Revolutionary Feminist Group organised the first Reclaim the Night marches. One of the co-founders of the 1977 march was Al Garthwaite, who later became a Leeds councillor. ‘It could be the man next door’ The nineteen seventies may feel a world away from today; with it’s strikes, political unrest, strikes and inflation it really is a world away (note sarcasm). The discovery of a body in a park in Chapeltown sparked a decade long investigation into Peter Sutcliffe, a serial killer supposedly inspired by the Jack the Ripper killings of 1800s London. 🦅PHOENIX RISING🦅- our travels through the history of women in Leeds are hosted by WOMAN of LEEDS Jude Kershaw. Today we find ourselves in a WW2 war torn city. ‘Come to the Factories!’ With husbands, sons and brothers leaving for war women were encouraged to take up manual labour to release these men to fight. Leeds was raided in April 1942 along with other cities including York. These images were taken on the cobbled lanes of Headingley, far from the wartime factories of Kirkstall, Armley and South Leeds. I’ve named this shoot after a wartime recruitment drive with the same name, baring the image of a woman with her arms cast open, Come to the Factories represents the Government’s want for women to do their duty for the war effort. Find out more with Jude and @runofthemillhistory ‘Rise up women!’ ‘The Suffragettes were a militant faction of women, led by Emmeline Pankhurst and the W.S.P.U. who were committed to the right to vote. In Leeds there was a widespread membership of both the WSPU and the peaceful National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS). Members would distribute flyers and banners down Elland Road on match day, chalk pavements with slogans and organise rallies across the city. One such meeting attracted 100,000 people to Woodhouse Moor. In 1918 the Representation of the People act granted the vote to monied women over the age of 21 and in 1928 all women over the age of 21. PHOENIX RISING our Woman of Leeds, artist and historian, Jude Kershaw is pictured here at Armley Mills. ‘The Mill Girl’ ‘With Leeds booming from town to city during the Victorian era, thousands of people descended on the city in search for work. Row upon row of back to back housing was erected across all parts of Leeds to accommodate the new workforce as the masses moved from the country to the city in search of work. While these houses were a step up from what might be found in the countryside these houses were prone to spread infection and disease. While diseases such as cholera and typhoid plagued the cities of Britain,an equal number of people died due to poor safety in the workplace; especially children. My work on Gender and Space (the travel and photography project I did in five Indian Metro Cities which was published by Firstpost) was mentioned in an EPW Engage article titled, “How Do We Help Women Navigate Cities Designed by Men?” When your work is referred to in academic texts, you are part of the knowledge history and for that I am truly honored and humbled. The same work and many other have been referred to, I've been interviewed for, and given public talks on them. The same work was also referred to in an academic book titled Graphic Narratives about South Asia and South Asian America (2021) edited by Kavita Daiya, and published by Routledge, and in an online journal article titled, “Our Cities are Designed For Men, By Men” by Harini Nagendra & Amrita Sen, published by Third Eye Portal a feminist think tank by NGO Nirantar. Gender and Space, an understanding of equal access to Public Space or Spatial Justice is one of the key feminist demand. Gender and Space is also my main feminist passion and I’ve done several works under the topic including my PhD on Women’s Political Space on Internet and Gender Trolling. I also started the Project SWBT – Single Woman Budget Travel – Reclaiming public space by solo travel. Here’s a better-proportioned ‘Reach’ (2023) | I don’t often casually name my work. Words are powerful - the ones you say, and the ones you don’t. So I like a nice, multi-definitive, multi-referential word like “Reach”. These works (that have come out of the work done on an unsuccessful billboard proposal I recently worked on) contain references to my autobiographical experience. So, in that context I give you some definitions of the word “reach’ - 1. Extend one's hand in an attempt to touch or grasp (something); 2. Hand (something) to (someone); let someone have; 3. Be able to touch something 4. arrive at; get as far as; make it to; 5. Accomplish, attain or extend to; amount to (a certain level of achievement); 6. Succeed in influencing or having an effect on; 7. Make contact with; connect 8. The extent or range of something's application, effect, or influence.

Throughout my twenties, I lived in the big city. And I walked. To the university campus, to work, to cinemas, to dates...or simply to leave the flat. Surrounded by taller buildings than in my home town, I learned to lift my gaze from pavement level to take in the architecture. After evenings out, going home by myself as a woman, I learned to walk with an air of purpose and determination, avoiding eye contact. It made me feel protected, even if it was probably just an illusion. 🏙 👟 Walking was simultaneously a way to be present in my surroundings, taking it all in, finding little details to be touched by, and a way to be somewhere else, lost in thought, processing feelings, making sense of the world. It's still that: how I position myself in the world, how I feel alive and connected to life around me and, even more so, to myself. 🧭 If any of that resonates with you, you'll love @lizzy_stewart 's book Walking Distance. - Clapham North It is the summer of deep shelters. And you definitely see how much they are a part of Clapham when you see this one at the corner of Clapham Road and Clapham Road Estate. Recently given a new look with this mural to ask ‘Where Are All The Women?’ Clapham Film Unit and artist Mel Saggs known as @7thpencil and part of the women’s art collective @womcollective have brought some bold bright answers with this mural. They worked on this one in conjunction with the Mayor of London’s ongoing public realm projects to make sure all Londoners feel they see themselves in and add to the public realm of the city.
