"I wasn't just afraid he might die, but that maybe he didn't love me enough to get sober." This is a piece I've written for Zibby Mag about silence, internalizing the responsibility for saving him, and how eventually I came to use fighting for my former husband's sobriety as a way to bring back my own voice, but louder and stronger and more more confident. As the sober partner in an addictive relationship, we internalize the addicts disease. Somehow it's our responsibility to fix him, we think. And anything short of sobriety is a personal failing. It's not logical, but little of addiction is. I had so many moments when the logical and emotional sides of me battled it out, usually without a clear win. I hope you'll take a read. I've found a wonderful community of other writers via two online sources, and I'm so grateful to make connections with other writers this way. 1 & 2. The weekly group hosted by @Darcey_Gohring_Writer for @ZibbyMag is fun, friendly, and easy place to meet other readers and writers. I've created my Writers Mastermind with three dear friends I've met there. And I created my weekly writing group (not pictured) from writers I've met both there and at the @ZibbyRetreats in Charleston. We meet every weekday for 3 hours in the morning to write or work quietly together on Zoom. 3. The Writers Bridge, hosted by @GuerillaMemoir is large, interesting, and super helpful. Kathleen joined and worked with @weekofthewebsite to make it Zibby Mag. The two of them own this part of our business and work so well together, managing the A+ team, the contributors, the aesthetics, and more. Watching them beam last night was amazing. ✨✨ Not every job comes with red carpet acknowledgment. 📸This launch took time, effort and collaboration. And these two really ran the show (with some meddling from me!!). But they deserve it! 🏆 CONGRATULATIONS, Kathleen and Jordan. I loved Schuster's memoir based self help debut, Lilies, so much and while I read it back in the very beginning of 2020, I still think about it today! 🌸🌺 And so when I saw she had another book on the horizon, I could not wait to get my hands on it, and a couple of weeks ago, I finally did!🔥 Her voice is authentic, and I love that she focuses just as much on self REFLECTION as she does on self care and Glow offers us more relatable insight with plenty of witty banter, compassion, and the reminder that sometimes we just need to get out of our own way! 👏 I alternated between reading and listening to #GlowInTheFckingDark via audiobook and enjoyed both formats so much.
