The Reappearance of Rachel Price - Holly Jackson “Rachel Price has reappeared after being gone for 16 years, and there are truths to be unfolded and dark twists to be revealed.” The book starts off quite interesting, just delving into the background of Bel, the disappearance of Rachel Price and how it has affected her or shaped her as a person. In the middle of it however I felt it got a bit slow because I was so eager to know more but the author does not give us more than bits and pieces. As the truths start getting revealed it picks up the pace again, and we see a dark side of everyone in the Price family. There are few things in the climax that blew my mind and I never thought that could be the ending but on the other hand there were few parts I had already predicted. So, after a near death experience, she sets off on a cross country roadtrip to get the most she can out of her life while she still has time. Charlie Montgomery, broody cowboy extraordinaire, is just going through the motions while running his struggling ranch with his brothers. Charlie’s still reeling from the traumatic death of his fiancée and is determined to keep his heart guarded. After a chance encounter during a bar fight, Charlie and Ruby can’t stay away from one another. Charlie ends up hiring Ruby to help with the ranch’s social media presence after a scandal breaks out. All the time spent around one another leads to some very real feelings that can’t be denied, even with secrets between them and unknown danger lurking in the shadows. This was like peak grumpy/sunshine, you guys, and I think it was done really really well. Ruby is strong, sweet, and pure of heart and Charlie is the perfect cowboy hero; grumpy to the max and brooding but also thoughtful and sweet. They were so good together. I loved the meet cute and everything that came after with these two. The romance was so tender and precious, but the spice was also hot. The small town/ranch/cowboy vibes in this book are amazing and I’m so impressed with the writing. You really feel like you’re on the ranch with these characters. I adored the easy banter and dialogue between the main characters and side characters, and I just really loved the found family feel. This book had everything you could possibly want in a cowboy romance. Not to mention, there’s just enough drama/suspense thrown in to keep the plot interesting until the very end. Overall, this book exceeded all my expectations and I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a captivating cowboy romance with lots of heart! Five stars for the cowboy and his sunflower. 🌻
We had an interesting discussion at #novelthoughtsbookclub about who has the right to tell someone else’s story. In this case, the author has told the story of real-life Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta, here portrayed as Anita de Monte, who fell (or was pushed by her husband, depending on whom you believe) from the window of her New York apartment in 1985. (A recent 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘠𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴 article recounts the Mendieta family’s struggle to have a say in how the artist’s life—and death—is being portrayed.) 📖 Anita is a gifted artist who lives in the shadow of her world-famous artist husband Jack Martin. Jack is violent and narcissistic and insecure, lashing out whenever the spotlight is not on him. After Jack pushes her out the window, she returns to haunt him in the form of an avenging bat, attacking him, his girlfriend, and anyone else who seeks to hide her art and thus erase her. 📖 There is a parallel storyline about Raquel Toro, an art student who attends Brown in the late 1990s, and how her life intersects with and is influenced by that of Anita de Monte: both are brown-skinned women in a white world, and both are in love with and, for a time, defined by, privileged white men. 📖 I thought the depiction of Raquel’s relationship with Nick was well done, especially the nuanced insights into how someone can at once love you and also make you question whether anyone else ever could without their careful curation and cultivation. 📖 As for who gets to tell Mendieta’s story, one could argue that bringing an artist out of the shadows and into the light is a good thing. One could also argue that it can bring the family more pain at someone else’s gain. Magic Hour—3.5⭐️ 💭What’s your favorite Kristin Hannah book? After a traumatized six-year-old girl materializes from the vast woods in a small Washington town, Ellie, the Chief of Police, enlists the help of her estranged sister, Julia, a child psychiatrist who’s suffered a recent fall from grace. For being written in 2006, this book really holds up and feels like something that could be released today. It’s not my favorite of Kristin Hannah’s works because I believe her writing has greatly improved since Magic Hour, but it says something that this might be considered the best work of many other authors. The writing is still beautiful and the characters feel like real people. The story is interesting, but it’s too long and I could feel my interest waning towards the end. The romances are unnecessary and add nothing to the story (which you’ll rarely hear me say as a romance lover). I kept thinking there would be some element of suspense because it’s frequently hinted at, but the climax and conclusion are a let down because of how neatly tied up they are.

Hello, bookish friends! Today I’m featuring another great novel in translation, THE CURSED FRIEND by Beatrice Salvioni, translated from the Italian by Elena Pala, and published by @harperviabooks . Thank you for the finished copy. As I mentioned in another post, this is a coming of age story about two young girls who come from different backgrounds and find themselves in a dangerous situation that will test their loyalty. Maddalena, known as the cursed one by the village, la “malnata”, a rebellious tomboy who seems to bring tragedy wherever she goes, and Francesca who comes from a well educated family and feels powerful attracted to the cursed one. The background of their unlikely friendship is the fascist Italy of the 30’s, which contributes to the atmosphere of the book, full of secrets and suspicions. I loved everything about this book except for the ending. It felt rushed and naive. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, it felt like written immediately after Italian fascism. Her style , direct and simple, reminded me of the early Natalia Ginzburg. And I appreciated the fact that these two young girls involuntarily end up fighting against fascism and misogyny. I recommend it, especially if you love historical fiction. {4.29.24} - REVIEW: The Wide Wide Sea Thanks to Doubleday for the #gifted copy. All opinions below are my own. This is not my first book on James Cook, however, I think it is my first one since pulling back the veil of colonization has become the norm. I feel like this was a more fair assessment of the impact of the explorer age on the world. I told us how Cook was mostly an exception to the rule with his Quaker sentiments. He was known for being quite fair and had more of a fascination with the science and anthropology of interacting with new cultures. While there are many things around the world named for the English he personally used indigenous names trying to honor the autonomy of the peoples he encountered. He did not convert and did not engage with violence, with only one killing attributed to him in his whole life… And that was in the final minutes. He kept detailed records, so a lot of what we know came from him. He had a bit of an understanding about disease and curiously found the cure for scurvy without really knowing it. And he was always trying to restrict his men who had venereal diseases from interacting with the natives, albeit not successfully. He had a mostly humble way with a human first approach… Until the very end when the Hawaiians mistook him for a god and things went awry… This book has a little something for everyone: adventure and discovery, history, science, anthropology and of course violence. Read this one if you liked The Wager. Do you like boats? The banter, the angst, the chemistry, the romance, the spice.. 😍 The way Elsie Silver brought a past between Ford and Rosie to be in the light to showcase their current relationship and why it is the way it is was so good. It really caused a lot more understanding and absolutely captured my attention from the jump because of that. This book felt like the perfect “right person, wrong time” story. There is something about the way Inga Simpson writes that pulls me in. Last year I read the wonderful Where the Trees are, by her, and this year I choose Nest (2014). We follow the thoughts and daily life of former art teacher, now artist, Jennifer Anderson, who has moved back to the Northern New South Wales area of her youth. Her childhood was marred by the disappearance of her best friend, Michael, and the sudden absence of her father. Jennifer always had a close connection to nature: to trees and wildlife, especially birds. She has made her name by painting them but found her original surname Vogel (German and Dutch for bird) a bit much, so she adopted her mother’s family name. Personally, I am not really very much into birds. Yes, I like them and feed them, but I am no ornithologist. Yet the relationship Jennifer has with them – watching them, drawing them – is strangely compelling. I found my self looking up all those exotic birds. Who would have thought the Australian robin is yellow and grey, and not at all like its red European cousin? In a curious way events come full circle when a girl, the friend of her private student, goes missing. The upheaval makes Jennifer consider events of her youth with adult eyes and reconsider some established truths. I found the description of Jennifers journey, and the gorgeous Australian woodland she lives in, fascinating. Angela Marsons je jedna z mých nejoblíbenějších autorek, co se týče krimi sérií a Skryté karty jsou už 8. díl ze série s vyšetřovatelkou Kim Stone. I když mám tuhle sérii doma kompletní, stejně vždycky čekám, až vyjde jako audiokniha, protože naprosto miluju, jak je načtená. Načtení má na svědomí Jitka Ježková a její hlas už mi prostě k téhle sérii neodmyslitelně patří. Anotace: Na elitní soukromé škole Heathcrest dojde k tragickému úmrtí třináctileté žákyně. Zdánlivě jasný případ sebevraždy inspektorku Kim Stoneovou těžce zasáhne, protože nestačila na místo dorazit včas a dívku zachránit. Snad právě proto se nechce s verdiktem smířit – a když se ukáže, že za smrtí malé Sadie Wintersové je cosi daleko temnějšího, začíná rozplétat předivo vztahů, jejichž nitky v skrytu vedou nejen do vyšších kruhů, ale i hloub do minulosti. Škola je však připravena svou pověst chránit a svá tajemství uchovat i za cenu dalšího zla, bez ohledu na to, koho ohrozí – včetně inspektorčiných nejbližších… Tenhle díl řadím mezi nejlepší díly, i když Ďábelské hry stále vedou ☺️ Tento díl autorka podala trochu drsněji, než je u ní zvykem, ale o to víc je kniha čtivá a děj vás nechává v napětí až do samotného konce. 🌟 REVIEW 🌟 NICK & CHARLIE by Alice Oseman 4 / 5 ⭐️ 💭 THOUGHTS: I don’t think I’ll ever tire of the Heartstopper universe. The stories of Nick and Charlie’s relationship are just so easy to consume. I love that Oseman kept a few illustrations included in this novella to reflect what was happening on the page, seeing as the main books are graphic novels. While I'll miss my cat buddies and my cozy reading chair, I'm excited for new adventures. I wanted to finish this book before the end of April, but this weekend was a whirlwind of cleaning the house and packing up, and I was so exhausted by the end of it, reading was not to be. I did, however, finish my audiobook, Sisters in Arms. Which was a BIPOC book about an all black female military unit during World War 2. Which was really fascinating to listen to. The characters were iffy, but I enjoyed the different WW2 perspective. "Imparare a vivere" di Maurizio Ferraris non è il solito saggio filosofico, e non è neanche un manuale di autoaiuto. È una riflessione che il filosofo fa a partire da un piccolo incidente che gli capita e che lo porta a rimettere in discussione come ha vissuto fino a quel momento, chiedendosi se sia possibile imparare a vivere. Il risultato di questa riflessione, che vuole essere solo condivisione di ciò a cui lui è arrivato, si articola in quattro sezioni, che vi racconto meglio nel carosello. Personalmente condivido il punto a cui giunge: vivere è convivere. Tuttavia c'è una riflessione in cui tutti i lettori non potranno non ritrovarsi ❣️ Ferraris difende la possibilità di imparare dai romanzi. Lui da giovane è rimasto folgorato dalla Ricerca del tempo perduto di Proust, che ha soddisfatto la voglia di tutti i giovani di avere una anticipazione su come sia la vita. E anche se è vero che la realtà supera sempre l'immaginazione, inevitabilmente quell'opera fornisce dei modelli che vengono interiorizzati. L'unica pecca di questo libro per me è che in alcune digressioni l'autore parte per la tangente (ad esempio quando si mette a parlare delle registrazioni delle opere di Leonard Cohen), ma è coerente con l'idea di flusso di coscienza che questa opera è. In generale molto bello, ma alcune cose non mi hanno convinto del tutto. Ne parliamo presto in un post dedicato. 4✨️ . 🌘 Da qui in poi è andato tutto male malissimo. Insieme a @fethereader ho letto Il club dei padri estinti di Matt Haig. Uno dei suoi primi lavori, un retelling di Amleto in cui si parla di lutto, della non accettazione della perdita, in cui un ragazzino deve capire cosa sia reale e cosa no. Non si sa bene cosa vuole essere, ha uno stile di scrittura privo di punteggiatura che rende faticosa la lettura. Insomma, per farla breve dirò che appena superate le 100pg ho mollato. Primo DNF del 2024. . 🌘 Altra massima delusione è stato The Atlas Paradox. Un #libro che soffre fortemente della sindrome del libro di mezzo. Non succede nulla, metà dei protagonisti è insulsa o inutile. Il finale non mi è dispiaciuto, ma non salva il nulla precedente. Ne parliamo presto... 2✨️ . 🌘 Ultimo libro finito giusto ieri è In the Lives of Puppets. Anche questo mediocre. Non mi ha comunicato molto, un Klune molto fiacco, che fa vedere le sue vere potenzialità solo nel finale. 📚🧶.. Haakproject: booksleeve 2 ..🧶📚 Naast de kleurrijke sleeve die ik dit jaar ga maken met alle kleuren van de boeken die ik lees (zie vorige post), heb ik deze alvast gehaakt voor nu. Voor een eerste poging ben ik er best blij mee! 🤗 Ik ga nog verschillende bloemen haken om erop te zetten, en misschien nog een vlinder. Ook moeten er nog twee knoopjes op waar nu nog klemmetjes zitten. Gisteravond heb ik eindelijk "Huis van Vuur en Schaduw" van sarah j maas uitgelezen en kan nu dus beginnen aan "Hate Mail" van Donna Marchetti, die ik van @cchasingtales 🧚🏼♀️ heb gekregen. 🤗 voor die heb ik ook meteen een bijpassend wolletje uitgekozen 🧶 📚🧶.. Crochet project: booksleeve 2 ..🧶📚 In addition to the colorful sleeve I'm going to make this year with all the colors of the books I read (see previous post), I've already crocheted this one for now. For a first attempt, I'm quite pleased with it! 🤗 I'm going to crochet various flowers to put on it, and maybe even a butterfly. There are also two buttons to be added where there are currently clips. Dziewczyna przez swoje doświadczenia z przeszłości jest mocno uprzedzona do chłopaków i nie ufa ich dobrym intencjom. Kiedy więc na imprezie poznaje Jareda, od razu zaczyna go chłodno traktować. Pierwsze spotkanie z książkami tej autorki i muszę przyznać, że jest ono wyjątkowo udane. Powiem szczerze nawet, że czuje lekki niedosyt, bo miałam wrażenie, że niektóre wątki zostały potraktowane powierzchownie, ale nie zmienia to faktu, że “Szklana maska, mroczny on” to pozycja, która bardzo mi się podobała. Książka podzielona na dwie części i właśnie te dwie części sprawiły, że zagłębiałam się w zupełnie skrajne emocje. Chociaż pierwsza przypadła mi bardziej do gustu, to obie świetnie się wypełniają. Łamano mi wielokrotnie serce, bo choć bohaterowie starali się trzymać je w całości, to historia była mocniejszą i silniejsza. Her latest series understanding the impact and causes of inequality is Patriarchs, a history of how the world came to be run by men. Starting way back when and looking at tribal histories through to the modern day Iranian revolution, Saini looks at how we got here. How did social and political dynamics develop and remain led by men? It’s a fascinating, academic lesson on the history of the world. There is a lot that demonstrates that the world hasn’t always been this way and there were many eras led by women. It isn’t a feminist manifesto with lots of actions and suggestions for how to change the world, but a clinical account of the way the role a women has changed. Saini’s writing is comprehensive but accessible, it’s not fluffy. I’d recommend being in a position to read a complete chapter at a time to get the most out of it. Or maybe listen to it?
