The Vela Supernova Remnant is the debris left over from a supernova explosion that occurred around 11,000 - 12,300 years ago, making it one of the youngest and closest supernova remnants to Earth. The explosion is believed to have originated from a massive star about 20 times the mass of the sun. The Vela Supernova Remnant is approximately 50 light-years in diameter with a shell-like structure, and it emits a variety of radiation from radio waves to X-rays. It is also a source of cosmic rays and plays a significant role in the study of supernova physics and the origin of high-energy particles in the universe. This wide field bicolour image was captured using the Samyang 135mm at f/2.8 and ASI 2600MM Pro. Mal wieder es neues, altes von mir. Der große Orionnebel erneut aufgenommen. Die Lernkurve ist steil, und so werden auch die Bilder besser. Erfordert aber auch viel Zeit. Fotografiert aus der Stadt heraus bei Bortle 6-7 und hellem Mond, was eine echte Herausforderung ist. Um den Kern nicht auszubrennen, empfehlen sich Belichtungszeiten zwischen 30 - 60s je nach Setup und Standort. Ich habe die goldene Mitte gewählt. Um auf 4h zu kommen habe ich satte 341 Lights aufgenommen (Rechenzeit am PC nochmal so lang!) NGC 2359; Thor's Helmet 👀 ❤️ NGC 2359 is a helmet-shaped cosmic cloud with wing-like appendages popularly called Thor's Helmet. Heroically sized even for a Norse god, Thor's Helmet is about 30 light-years across. In fact, the helmet is more like an interstellar bubble, blown as a fast wind from the bright, massive star near the bubble's center inflates a region within the surrounding molecular cloud. Known as a Wolf-Rayet star, the central star is an extremely hot giant thought to be in a brief, pre-supernova stage of evolution. NGC 2359 is located about 15,000 light-years away in the constellation of the Great Overdog. The remarkably sharp image is a mixed cocktail of data from broadband and narrowband filters using three different telescopes. It captures natural looking stars and the details of the nebula's filamentary structures. The predominant bluish hue is strong emission from doubly ionized oxygen atoms in the glowing gas. Astronomers found evidence for a 3rd earth-size planet circling our closest star Proxima Centauri, just 4 light years away. The candidate planet Proxima D is estimated to be just 25% as massive as Earth and orbits extremely close to its parent star, at one tenth of the distance between the sun and Mercury, the solar system’s innermost planet. Scientists spotted the new planet after studying tiny wobbles in the motion of Proxima caused by the gravitational pull it exerts as it swings around the star. Observations taken with the Esoastronomy Very Large Telescope in Chile suggest the planet completes a full orbit of the star every five days. Astronomers believe the planet orbits about 2.4m miles (4m km) from Proxima Centauri, meaning it is closer to the star than its habitable zone where the temperature range is just right for water to run freely. Messier 27, The Dumbbell Nebula. Spotted by Charles Messier in 1764, M27 was the first planetary nebula ever discovered. The term “planetary nebula” is a bit of a misnomer based on the nebula’s round, planet-like appearance when viewed through smaller telescopes. The nebula is the result of an old star that has shed its outer layers in a glowing display of color. In Hubble’s image, which shows a small portion of M27, blue represents oxygen, green represents hydrogen, and red indicates sulfur and nitrogen. M27 hosts many knots of gas and dust. As depicted in Hubble’s image, some look like fingers pointing at the central star, located just off the upper left of the image; others are isolated clouds, some with and some without tails. Their sizes typically range from 17 billion to 56 billion kilometers, which is several times larger than the distance from the sun to Pluto. Each contains as much mass as three Earths. These dense knots of gas and dust seem to be a natural part of the evolution of planetary nebulas. They form when the stellar winds are not powerful enough to blow away a larger clump of matter but are able to blow away smaller particles, creating a trail behind the clump. The shapes of these knots change as the nebula expands. Similar knots have been discovered in other nearby planetary nebulas that are all part of the same evolutionary scheme. Also known as the Dumbbell Nebula, M27 resides more than 1,200 light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula. With an apparent magnitude of 7.5, the nebula can be spotted with a small telescope most easily in September. WHIRLPOOL GALAXY 🌀✨ . The Whirlpool Galaxy, also known as Messier 51a, and NGC 5194, is an interacting grand-design spiral galaxy with a Seyfert 2 active galactic nucleus. It lies in the constellation Canes Venatici, and was the first galaxy to be classified as a spiral galaxy. Its distance is 31 million light-years away from Earth. You can also see three distant galaxies around the bottom of the M51 (the tiny grey smudges) . This is my first deep sky object captured with my 5 inch apochromatic refractor! The optical quality is really good with this scope, and enabled me to get a detailed image even from my light polluted bortle 8 city and at a shorter FL. Galaxies can't be captured with narrowband filters like Nebulae, so light pollution affects them a lot. I managed to get lucky with a stretch of clear nights with good seeing near the new moon, and this image was the result. It comprises of nearly 11 hours of total exposure in HaLRGB with a monochrome camera. This galaxy is one of my favorites, and I'm really happy with this image. The Seagull Nebula ❤️🔭 . IC 2177 is a region of nebulosity that lies along the border between the constellations Monoceros and Canis Major. It is a roughly circular H II region centered on the Be star HD 53367. The name Seagull Nebula is sometimes applied by amateur astronomers to this emission region, although it more properly includes the neighboring regions of star clusters, dust clouds and reflection nebulae. . SADR REGION ✨ . The Gamma Cygni Nebula, also known as the Sadr Region or IC 1318, is a diffuse emission nebula that can be seen around Sadr (Gamma Cygni), the star at the center of the Northern Cross, which marks the heart of Cygnus, the Swan. Despite the name, the star and the nebula are unrelated. Even though it looks embedded in the nebulosity,  Sadr is approximately 1,800 light years distant, while the nebula is much further away, at 4,900 light years. . This data was captured in late 2020, and I've reprocessed this in HaRGB to get a much better result as compared to my first attempt in HOO. The Horsehead and flame ❤️ . Here is my new image of IC434, also known as the horsehead nebula! A big improvement from my result last winter which had just 3 hours exposure. With 8+ hours in HaRGB, I was able to get a nice result even from my light polluted city! 😁 . Saturn and J1407b ring size comparison. Called J1407b, the giant exoplanet has a disk of 30- odd rings with a girdle of halos 200 times bigger than Saturn's. Just to put it into perspective, if J1407b rings were part of Saturn instead, they would easly be seen from Earth. The rings begin at a distance of about 30 million km from the planet and stretch out to a distance of 90 million km. The exoplanet is probably about 10 to 40 times the mass of Jupiter and also 16 million years old, which makes it an infant in terms of stellar age. COSMIC SPAGHETTI 🍝 . Simeis 147, also known as the Spaghetti nebula, is a supernova remnant (SNR) in the Milky Way, straddling the border between the constellations Auriga and Taurus. It is very difficult to observe and photograph due to it's low brightness, and spans a massive 3 degrees in the sky. It is at an estimated distance of approximately 3000 (±350) light-years, and an age of approximately 40,000 years. . This was my first attempt at this extremely faint target, and I'm stunned by the results! 😁I captured this over 3 extremely clear nights last week, and managed to get this result with just 6 hours integration. IC410: The Tadpoles Nebula ❤️ . IC410 is a dusty emission nebula located in the constellation of Auriga at about 12.000 ly from Earth. It is part of a larger star forming region that also contains the Flaming Star Nebula. THE PACMAN NEBULA 💛 . NGC 281, is a bright emission nebula and part of an H II region in the northern constellation of Cassiopeia and is part of the Milky Way's Perseus Spiral Arm. This 20×30 arcmin sized nebulosity is also associated with open cluster IC 1590, several Bok globules and the multiple star, B 1. Colloquially, NGC 281 is also known as the Pacman Nebula for its resemblance to the video game character. In optical images the "mouth" of the Pacman character appears dark because of obscuration by dust and gas, but in the infrared Spitzer image the dust in this region glows brightly. . This was my first attempt at this northerly target. I'm pretty happy with this result given the FL of 360mm, but I'd definitely like to shoot a close up of this object in the future 😁 . THE WIZARD IN SPACE 🧙‍♂️🪄 . NGC 7380 is a young open cluster of stars in the northern circumpolar constellation of Cepheus, discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1787. The surrounding emission nebulosity is known colloquially as the Wizard Nebula, which spans an angle of 25′. German-born astronomer William Herschel included his sister's discovery in his catalog, and labelled it H VIII.77. . The NGC 7380 complex is located at a distance of approximately 8.5 kilolight-years from the Sun, in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way.The cluster spans ~20 light-years (6 pc) with an elongated shape and an extended tail. COSMIC CHRISTMAS TREE 🎄✨❤️ . Merry Christmas! 😁 NGC 2264 identifies the Cone Nebula, the Snowflake cluster, the Fox fur nebula, as a part of the larger complex commonly known as the Christmas tree cluster. This cluster is located 2,700 light years away in the monoceros constellation, and is close in our sky to the famous Rosette Nebula. The Christmas Tree star formation consists of young stars obscured by heavy layers of dust clouds. These dust clouds, along with hydrogen and helium are producing luminous new stars. There is a diverse arrangement of brilliant colors, and an evolving process of structure that follow star formation in a nebula. . I’d been trying to finish up this target before Christmas day, and luckily, I managed to get enough clear nights in december to get 8+ hours on this faint target. This is my first image of this area, and I just love the dazzling colours in the Hydrogen rich region, and the blue and orange stars, with a faint blue reflection nebula as well. CALIFORNIA NEBULA 🧡 . This is my best image of this target yet, with 31+ hours shot on this target and the best 24 hours stacked to get this vibrant result! The much fainter Sii sulphur data provided the yellowish-orange colour as opposed to the traditional red associated with this target. It’s hard to believe such an image can be shot from a light polluted city, but it just shows the power of narrowband filters and long integration times. It took my 15 nights to shoot this target, the longest I’ve done by far. This is a 2 panel mosaic, which was needed to fit the large nebula at my FL of 360mm. With the help of NINA’s platesolving, the mosaic alignment and capture was a breeze. . Special thanks to @mr_deepsky for processing this. He really did an amazing job. . The California Nebula (NGC 1499/Sh2-220) is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. It is so named because it appears to resemble the outline of the US State of California on long exposure photographs.
