AOR SUNDAY • I want to thank @puremusiclover and @vinyl_ragazzo for their awesome posts today, and for reminding me that I have been skipping this hashtag for far too long. So, here's one I haven't posted before: • BAD COMPANY - Fame and Fortune (1986) 🇬🇧 Original 1986 pressing 📀 on Atlantic label • This album gets a lot of hate. It is mostly considered sub par, when compared to Bad Company's previous efforts, and labelled too poppy and lacking the emotional expression found in their original, blues-rock sound. Indeed, when I first heard 'This Love', I found it very difficult to believe that this was the same band that delivered the classics such as 'Shooting Star', 'Feel Like Makin' Love' and the like. As a matter of fact, it wasn't, well at least not completely, as Paul Rodgers had left Bad Company, and was replaced by Brian Howe. The result was in line with the 80s trends - blues rock was no longer the talk of the town, and what the crowds got was a well polished, keyboard-heavy arena rock LP. So, there you have it: if you're a fan of the style, I recommend ignoring the reviews and not disregarding this album. This is my final #AORSunday entry. I’ll continue to post AOR, of course, but I’ve grown weary of the “Sunday” ritual. Plus, the majority of what I share on this page is AOR anyway so AOR Sunday is a little redundant, right? That said, I’m closing out with one of the most beautiful albums in my collection: #NothingButTheTruth from Australia’s criminally underrated #SouthernSons; a slick adult-contemporary tour-de-force packed with top-shelf writing, immaculate playing, and some of the smoothest vocals ever put to tape. There are a few hi-tech “rockers” here but the main focus is moody mid-tempos and lush ballads like #Shelter, #LeadMeToWater, #Sometimes, #YouWereThere, #CantWaitAnyLonger, #StillLoveYouSo, and #WildestLove; each spackled with soul-stirring guitar-work from #PhilBuckle and breathtaking vocal acrobatics from #JackJones who’s up there with #MarkFree, #StevePerry, #FreddyCurci, and #MickeyThomas in my book; a monster talent that absolutely deserves to be a mega-star. Power, range, emotion, heart - this dude has it all. “Nothing But The Truth” won’t appeal to every taste (it’s not “heavy” in any sense of the word) but if you dig polished #RichardMarx-style melodic-rock with a pinch of Westcoast and appreciate high-quality song-craft and world-class production values then you’re in for a real treat. When you think #TedNugent you don’t normally think “AOR” but #Penetrator is a big exception. This might be the most polarizing Nugent album in the catalog - a creative one-eighty that saw terrible Ted submitting to the power of pop with a spirited collection of commercial #Foreigner-style arena-rock propelled by the golden pipes of #BrianHowe. I’m a huge Howe fan so when I found out he sang on this record I knew I had to have it even though I wasn’t really into Nugent at the time. Ted purists will probably puke but I absolutely adore #TiedUpInLove, #DrawTheLine, #KnockinAtYourDoor, #DontYouWantMyLove, and the moody #BlameItOnTheNight - any one of which could have easily appeared on the first Howe-fronted #BadCompany album two years later. “Draw The Line” was written by #BryanAdams and recorded for #Reckless but unfortunately didn’t make the final cut which is too bad because it’s a great tune. All said, “Penetrator” still falls short of classic-album status in my book due to a cluster of silly Ted-led fillers in the back half. Here’s a semi-obscure pop-metal pearl situated somewhere between #RomeosDaughter, #TPau, #Saraya, and maybe even #WilsonPhillips in its lighter moments (see: “Stand Up.”) #AllIsForgiven holds the distinction of being the first rock album recorded direct-to-disk via the Synclavier Digital Music System but the average listener probably won’t have a clue because the music sounds pretty much like any other hi-tech AOR release from the period. It’s not a heavy album and doesn’t “rock” in the traditional sense of the word but the hooks, textures, and melodies are pure commercial bliss. #DontLetGo, #HowDareAWoman, #SoFarAway (I love that solo!), the aforementioned #StandUp, and the moody, R&B-flavored #LoveShutDown are my favorites - all of them beautiful mid-tempo ear-worms that definitely should have found a home in the upper reaches of the Billboard Hot 100. #Siren was forced to change their name to #RedSiren soon after this album hit the streets due to a pending lawsuit from a German metal band with the same name. And have always made good music Magnum never had a huge hit or made the big international breakthrough. Nevertheless, every rock fan is familiar with this likeable band. About Magnum: Magnum is an English hard rock band. It was founded in 1972 by Bob Catley and Tony Clarkin (1946-2024) in Birmingham. The style of the songs written by the band is characterised by Bob Catley's vocals as well as the keyboards and synthesizers, which are rather atypical for a hard rock group and which, especially during the early phase, consolidated the sound of the English band. Magnum never released a bad album. So this album is also worth listening to. l was lucky to get one of this boxes. They were Sold out in a blink of an eye. #3rdMatinee is essentially the 2nd #ToyMatinee album only with vocalist #RichardPage of #MrMister in for #KevinGilbert. I gushed about Toy Matinee for #AORSunday two months ago but I’m not as enthusiastic about this one. The production and musicianship are perfect, of course, and there are a few gems like #FreedomRoad, #EchoHill, and #HolidayForSweetLouise that come close to capturing the “Matinee” magic but the album as a whole could use a few more uptempo cuts to balance out all of the melodramatic moodiness. If you enjoy adult-contemporary pop music with a progressive flair similar to #MarcJordan then by all means give this a go but I suggest hearing the 1990 “Toy Matinee” release first. #TourDeForce is an album of firsts - the first 38 Special release to focus more on AOR than Southern Rock, the first without any #JimPeterik co-writes, and the first to see #DonnieVanZant take a backseat to #DonBarnes who sings lead on six of the nine tracks here. #UndercoverLover and #TwentiethCenturyFox are the closest this gets to the sound of olde - the rest is smooth, commercial ear-candy better suited to the radio than the roadhouse. #Journey by way of #JacksonBrowne - and that’s not a diss in any way. Listen to creamsicle classics like #BackWhereYouBelong and #IfIdBeenTheOne in the context of a “Greatest Hits” set and they might not raise an eyebrow alongside the band’s other chart-toppers but play this album back-to-back with “Wild-Eyed Southern Boys” and “Special Forces” and the change in style is quite apparent. But, hey - the songs are what matter and there are lots of great ones here like #SeeMeInYourEyes, #OneOfTheLonelyOnes, #LongDistanceAffair, and the breezy Van Zant-led #OneTimeForOldTimes. I'll just list the members of the band: Gregg Rolie, Kevin Chalfant, Josh Ramos, Ross Valory ,Ron Wikso, and Steve Smith. Every melodic rocker will have a big grin on their face after hearing these names. A real supergroup that was founded in the early 90's in San Francisco. This is the 2nd and unfortunately also the last album of the formation after the debut from 1991. This kind of music was unfortunately no longer popular in the mid 90's. The band came a few years too late. Nevertheless, the albums have never been forgotten and enjoy a very high reputation in the AOR scene. Of course, the sound is most comparable to Journey, also because of singer Chalfant. On this album we have 2 ex Journey members, on the debut there were even 3. The first album was Released on vinyl, but is An expensive rarity today. I was wondering why it took so long after the first album in 1991 for the second one to come? Well...the album would have been finished and ready in 1993, but the label wasn't interested anymore. The label interscope only focussed on rap and grunge. So it took a few years until other distribution channels could be found. (Music for Nations) The band's momentum was over, of course. As AOR Fan you cannot go wrong here. Ever since I posted that #DonBarnes album for #AORSunday a few months ago I’ve been itchin’ to get into #38Special - and here we are, finally. Southern-style AOR has always been one of my favorite 80s sub-genres but one that I feel never really got a fair shake alongside the heavier hard-rock acts of the decade. These days you have so many throwback bands trying to be the next #Journey, #BonJovi, #MotleyCrue, and #DefLeppard but there are virtually no equivalents to 38 Special unless you care to chart a line of lineage to modern pop-country (and I don’t). Anyway, I’m a big fan of these guys and consider their 1981-1988 run to be the gold standard when it comes to classic dirt-road AOR which, as I say, doesn’t exist in this particular form anymore. #Boston made me the AOR fan I am today. From the moment I heard #MoreThanAFeeling on the radio in High School I was hooked on this genre and I never looked back. #TomScholz is a mad genius, no question, but a lot of what I loved about the band came curtesy of the two Bs: #BradDelp and #BarryGoudreau. I wasn’t aware of #RTZ until the mid-to-late nineties but once I found out that Brad and Barry were involved I knew I had to hear it. #ReturnToZero is the kind of classy adult oriented pop-rock that nobody makes anymore; squeaky-clean AOR stamped with polished guitars, breezy #Beatles-esque harmonies, and sticky-sweet hooks that just make you feel good. This is the Delp and Goudreau show all the way - both men proving their salt with sparkling gems like #FaceTheMusic, #ThisIsMyLife (that lead-guitar break is pure magic), #UntilYourLoveComesBackAround (a well-deserved Top 40 hit), #AllYouveGot, the title track, #RainDownOnMe, and #LivinForTheRockNRoll which kinda feels like a long lost cousin to #RockNRollBand. Very polite and laid-back music for a ‘91 release but the songs and performances more than make up for any lack of balls or muscle. I originally meant to highlight this CD a few weeks ago when #MylesGoodwyn first passed but things didn’t go as planned so I’m doing it now for my final #AORSunday of the year. When it comes to April Wine the safe bet is usually 81’s “Nature Of The Beast” and while I love that album I find myself spinning this under-the-radar gem much more often. #Attitude was released in 1993 and was basically a reunion record for the band who had been out of action for nearly a decade at this point. Goodwyn, Greenway, and Mercer are the only classic-era members left but it doesn’t bother me and it really shouldn’t bother you as the writing is flashy and energetic and offers a toothy mix of from-the-hip rockers like #ItHurts, #StrangeKindOfLove, the sleazy #Aerosmith-esque #HeresLookinAtYouKid, #BetterSlowDown, and #ThatsLove and atmospheric stadium ballads like #IfYouBelieveInMe, #VoiceInMyHeart, and the haunting #CantTakeAnotherNight which would have probably been a big hit for the guys a few years earlier. This style of meat-n-potatoes Canadian arena-rock stood zero chance in the 90s, of course, but it’s the kind of music that just seems to age like fine wine for me; good, honest, evergreen AOR that can make a Monday morning feel like a Saturday night. Great production, hooks, harmonies, riffs, and vocals. On the occasion of their 40th anniversary, Night Ranger have joined forces with the CYO to present their greatest hits in a new guise. The songs are given an incredible richness by the classically integrated orchestral parts. NIGHT RANGER played all the songs in the live repertoire with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra. CYO consists of more than 90 musicians with winds, strings and percussion between the ages of 12 and 18, from around 40 schools in Ohio, who have already performed on stage with STYX, STARSHIP and Pat Benetar. Singer and bassist Jack Blades is joined by his early bandmates Brad Gillis on lead guitar and drummer Kelly Keagy, who also lent his voice to "Sister Christian" and numerous other songs. When it comes to nineties AOR #21Guns is right up there with #Tyketto, #VonGroove, #UnrulyChild, #Giant, #BadEnglish, and #Hardline for me. 92’s #Salute was another blind buy from back in my college days and it wasn’t until I got home and looked through the liner notes that I realized the guitar player was #ScottGorham from #ThinLizzy. That fact alone lends class and credence to this gem which runs the gamut from attitude-driven anthems like #KneeDeep, #Walking, and #LittleSister to moody mid-tempo treats like #Jungleland, #TellMe, and #NoWayOut to gorgeous, world-weary ballads like #JustAWish, #MarchingInTime, and my hands-down fave - #TheseEyes; a harrowing heart-breaker that would have definitely put these guys on the hit list had it been released just three years earlier. I think what elevates this album above many of the contemporary AOR acts of the period is the fact that it doesn’t bog itself down in the same tired cliches and somehow manages to tackle heavy subject matter like death, addiction, war, and social injustice while still maintaining a pop sensibility. The fact that the music is rooted in 70s stadium-rock as opposed to 80s hair-metal gives it an heir of sophistication as well. I definitely can’t forget to mention vocalist #TommyLaVerdi who has always sounded to me like a mix of #JohnWaite and #StevePerry with a pinch of #JeffKeith - a very unique voice and one I wish we’d hear more of these days. As for 21 Guns, it’s the same old story, unfortunately. Much like Von Groove (and sooo many others), these guys just arrived at the wrong time - so late to the pop-metal party that the album didn’t even get a vinyl release. There was absolutely no way a record like this was going to make waves at the tail-end of 1992 - and it sure didn’t. Joshua Tree’s Vinyl Picks #210: IT’S SOUNDTRACK SUNDAY!! And here is a great one. Hard to find, but loaded with good stuff. It’s the soundtrack to “Breaking Bad”. Here is “Baby Blue”, by Badfinger. This song served as the perfect ending for the final scene of the series. “Baby Blue” plays in the last minutes of the final episode of the TV drama Breaking Bad in a scene where the lead character, Walter White, dies in a meth lab. At the start of the series, White is a high school chemistry teacher, but he develops a signature strain of blue meth and finds the drug trade far more profitable and exciting. Throughout the series, he refuses to compromise his work, so his blue meth is his “baby” in that regard. The finale aired September 29, 2013, attracting over 10 million views. Downloads and streams of “Baby Blue” spiked right after the episode. When it comes to “Albums That Shoulda Been Big” I can’t think of a better example than this moody, rain-slick sizzler from Arizona’s #ICON. These guys started out as a straight-forward metal band but 1985’s #NightOfTheCrime saw them easing back on the tooth-n-nail aggression in favor of a more melodramatic arena-rock sound similar to Dokken. I’ve always thought this had a very noirish, #Queensryche-style atmosphere about it as well - almost like what you’d get if those guys had decided to ditch progressive-metal and go full-on AOR. As for the songs, most of them were written or co-written by melodic-rock mainstay Bob Halligan Jr. and are the perfect blend of silk and steel - tough, tender, polished, punchy, and propelled by robust vocals, razor-sharp guitars, and dramatic scene-setting keys. #RockMyRadio is a fairly average party anthem that doesn’t really fit but #NakedEyes, #TakeAnotherShot, #DangerCalling, #Missing, #OutForBlood, #WhitesOfTheirEyes, and #RaiseTheHammer are all amazing and definitely should have made these guys A-level super-stars. Unfortunately, vocalist #StephenClifford jumped ship during the mixing of the album which led to the band being dropped by their label and the record receiving next to zero promotion. ICON reformed with #JerryHarrison a few years later and released #MorePerfectUnion (which is brilliant) but their moment in the sun had already passed and by the time #RightBetweenTheEyes hit the streets in ‘89 they seemed to be following rather than leading. It’s too bad because these guys really had it all: the looks, the chops, the attitude, and most importantly, the songs. Fun fact: “Hang Tough” was dropped during production but resurrected by #PrettyMaids for #LethalHeroes in 1990. I found this record at a flea market 20 years ago, turned it over and saw #JonathanCain and #DesmondChild listed in the back cover credits, and bought it immediately. #JimmyBarnes was a name I had heard a few times before but I really had no idea what to expect from this when I put it under the needle for the first time. Man, was I in for a treat! #FreightTrainHeart is rugged, blue-collar AOR from Australia that sounds a little like #BadCompany crossed with #Journey which is no surprise given the fact that Cain produced it and the material features writing contributions from #NealSchon, #JimVallance, #TonyBrock, and #JoeLynnTurner - an AOR “dream team” if there ever was one. The songs are superb - a classy mix of rootsy working-man anthems ( #LastFrontier, #StillOnYourSide, #DrivingWheels), rowdy barroom party-rockers ( #DoOrDie, the ACDC-esque #LessonsInLove, and #IWannaGetStartedWithYou which includes #HueyLewis on harmonica and backing vocals), and torrid, heart-swelling ballads ( #TooMuchAintEnough, #WaitinForTheHeartache, #WalkOn) - and Jimmy’s vocals are just flat-out brilliant across the entirety of it. Talk about power and conviction! Unfortunately, despite an A-list supporting cast, excellent production, and terrific tunes, the album somehow failed to crack the U.S. Top 100 when it was released here back in 1987. RIP Miles Goodwyn 🇨🇦🇨🇦🎸🎸 Myles Goodwyn, the singer, guitarist and primary songwriter for Canadian rock group April Wine, has died at the age of 75. April Wine’s 1981 album The Nature of the Beast became their biggest commercial hit in the States with over 1 million copies sold. It also spawned their biggest hit, "Just Between You and Me,” which peaked at No. 21. This album was one of my fav albums going into those high school years. #Gotthard started life as a balls-to-the-wall hard-rock act somewhere between #Whitesnake and #ACDC but the release of their third album “G” saw them incorporating more AOR elements into their sound which ultimately led to a series of mature, mainstream-oriented records that favored melody over musculature. 2005’s #Lipservice was heralded as a raucous return to the band’s roots but it’s actually just the best of both worlds and the most consistent collection of songs these guys ever produced in my opinion. There’s a little something here for everyone whether it be heavy, riff-driven rockers like #StayForTheNight, #SaidAndDone, and #DreamOn, feel-good arena crowd-pleasers like #AllWeAre and #LiftUUp, commercial ear-candy like #CupidsArrow, #AnytimeAnywhere, and #IWonder, or impassioned power ballads like #EverythingIWant, #IveSeenAnAngelCry, and #NothingLeftAtAll. It’s rare to have a fourteen-track album where every song is top quality but “Lipservice” is exactly that. I missed #AORSunday last week thanks to a few wedding party “wounds” but I’m back on my feet again and excited to present one of my all-time favorite AOR albums: 1980’s #UnionJacks! This was the fourth and penultimate release for #TheBabys but the first to include keyboardist #JonathanCain and bassist #RickyPhillips which essentially makes it the little brother to #BadEnglish. It might lack that luxurious late-80s aesthetic but from a writing perspective it’s not much different from the radio-sweetened arena-AOR that “B.E.” would take to the top of the pop charts a decade later. The first three “Babys” records are classics, of course, but this is where I feel the band really stepped things up and perfected their unique blend of pomp, New Wave, and AOR. There’s just a toughness and an urgency to this material that wasn’t there before whether it’s dramatic, synth-punctuated mood-swings like #InYourEyes, the title track, and the heart-racing #TrueLoveTrueConfession or more straight-forward meat-and-potatoes rockers like #MidnightRendezvous and #Anytime. The production is slick and shiny (I love the drum sound), the playing is tight and energetic, and the vocals are nothing short of brilliant. Waite could sing the back of a barf bag and turn it into a hit single. 😏 Speaking of hit singles, #BackOnMyFeetAgain was the band’s last Top 40 but it really should have gone Top 10 if you ask me. This is as perfect a commercial radio anthem as you’ll ever hear and easily as good as anything #Journey did during their classic period. I’ve got an all-time classic for #AORSunday this week: the 1983 debut album from New Orleans, Louisiana legends #Zebra. This isn’t my favorite of the band’s eighties trilogy but it’s the first one I heard and it definitely left a big impression on me due to its eclectic mixture of hard-rock, folk, pop, and prog; a truly unique endeavor for the era that combined everything from #TheBeatles to #LedZeppelin to #Triumph to #Rush and still managed to sound like nothing else on Earth. Zebra was truly a band “out-of-time” and had they released this record in the mid-70s, I absolutely believe they’d be a household name today (or at least name-dropped much more often). Unfortunately, their brand of brainy, retro-enamored arena-rock didn’t stand much of a chance against the early-eighties glam-metal invasion but there’s an ageless sophistication about it that the Motley Crues, the Quiet Riots, and the Ratts will never be able to match. I love every song here but #WhosBehindTheDoor is the real masterpiece; a haunting, extra-terrestrial epic exploring alien intervention and humanity’s place in the cosmos that deserves to be just as famous as anything Zeppelin, Rush, or #BlueOysterCult did. I can’t say enough about this mind-expanding mood-piece. It really doesn’t matter how many times I play it - that acoustic riff coupled with the song’s eerie lyrics and Randy’s piercing howls always sends a shiver straight through my soul. Pure, other-worldly magic - folky, futuristic, and totally unforgettable. “As I Said Before,” this isn’t my favorite Zebra album, it’s just one of my favorite albums period. Had I not heard #LastPlaneOut on the Bob & Tom radio show back in 1994 I may never have discovered this gem - so a big thanks to those guys for turning me on to one of my all-time favorite albums. #ToyMatinee is a must-hear for audiophiles, production nerds, and anyone who digs hi-tech progressive-tinged pop music ala #Toto and #MrMister. This is really its own thing though - a classy mix of prog, pop, Westcoast, and AOR that was probably a little too smart for its own good at the time. The brain-trust behind this eclectic ear-candy is multi-instrumentalist #KevinGilbert as well as producer-to-the-stars #PatrickLeonard who collectively cut their teeth with cult acts like #Giraffe and #Trillion before moving on to more mainstream work with A-list icons like #Madonna and #SherylCrow. There are only nine tracks here but they cover lots of ground from the futuristic bells-and-whistles funk-rock of “Last Plane Out” to the #Beatles-esque retro-pop of #TurnItOnSalvadore to the hi-tech Rhythm and Blues of #QueenOfMisery to the smooth Westcoast AOR of #RememberMyName to the moody prog of #ThereWasABoy to the rustic folk-rock of #WeAlwaysComeHome to the jazzy balladry of #ThingsSheSaid and #JennyLedge. State-of-the-art production values, top-flight musicianship, brilliant lyrics - trust me, this is one of the greatest records you’ve never heard. They make really, really cool AOR/Classic Rock. It's one of the bands I've most enjoyed discovering in recent years!
