Fused with pitch black humor and a plethora of societal commentary, Caitlin Cronenberg has delivered her feature length debut. #HumaneMovie is an interesting announcement of what fascinates her. It’s a bit stirring, but because of how overstuffed it feels, it falls short of its lofty aims. Set in a world past the brink of global capacity, the UN and all of its members take drastic actions to avoid extinctions. The depopulation of all the world’s countries. When a pair of family heads announce their enlistment, and one suddenly gets cold feet, chaos ensues. As the government agent sent to collect the enlisters informs the family, he won’t be leaving without two bodies. In the tight confines of a single home, Humane examines the climate crisis, blue-collar working class life, and governmental selectivity. But none have enough time to breathe as bloody battles take place. And it’s weird that the ideas don’t feel like they have enough space too. Because for the most part the film stagnates on long takes allowing the family members to talk, or fight. The editing doesn’t briskly moves things along, but chooses to draw out somber moments to help drive one point or another home. Some of those moments do work though, and between that, the humor, and a handful of sequences, this is easily worth giving a chance if the idea intrigued you. I'm so glad I had front row tickets to this screening of 'Love Lies Bleeding' to look forward to today (we only got it in the UK last Friday). Every inch of me resisted getting on the plane from Boston to London as it was so painful to part from my grrrl, but I know that I have lots to get on with and not a day goes by where I don't wear her against my skin... It was so good to know I had an adrenaline fuelled queer movie to look forward to that same day, and this special screening with writer/director Rose Glass really hit the spot. His panicked cries punctuated by the rhythmic pounding of the things feet as it ran, ran! Down the length of the Trench. The lieutenant was there in a heartbeat calmly giving orders to form up for firing. Poor Jenkins gave us the time to form up, the creature grabbed him and shoved him into the gaping maw in its torso, a sickening crunch as it bit into Jenkins' body, his legs tumbling in a cascade of gore to the Trench floor. Only got 2 more of these guys left to post and I saved my favourite 2 for last!!! Meet the Jell-o-Fish! Jell-o-fish are extremely cool creatures. Parts of their body are completely see through and filled with a jell-o like substance. This substance appears to be a mix of all vital bodily fluids. This means this creature doesn’t have veins or even many organs. it appears to just have a digestive tract that floats freely inside its jell-o filled body. I took one of these fish back to my base intrigued by its biology and bodily structure. Feeling the outside of the fish, it has a thick slimy film around it that holds all of its innards inside. This coats the entire fish. Once cut into (As much as it pained me to do so), its jell-o-like fluid flows out, but is actually more like a viscous syrup. It doesn’t have many bones that hold it together, mostly just a spine that connects to its fins that holds it together, and a loosely structured skull. This drawing came from an old doodle I did in my sketchbook that sat around waiting to be coloured for the longest time! Very happy I finally got to use it for a project! So it's hard to get a good photo of this badass wraparound cover that @davidlecomptecomics drew (and I colored), as I don't want to bend the spine too much and damage the comic. So here are my attempts. Slide 1 is just me opening the cover as much as I can without damaging it, slide 2 is 2 copies side by side (front and back) to form the whole picture. This cover art is so good, I'm thinking maybe we should just make a poster of it one day. What do you guys think?
