As the abv dropped below 40%, it can no longer be called whisky. It is now a distilled spirit. When this was seem on sale, not that long ago, I took a chance on it. From @boutiqueywhisky this bottle has some very interesting and hopefully delicious contents. With an age like that and a story that matches, I'm hoping for delicious but expecting very woody and tannic flavors. After seeing @darkcloudwhisky ‘s post on this bottle yesterday he said I should definitely open mine. Am I ever glad I did. Now he did a great job establishing how good a value bottle this is, being a 30yr age statement for around $100. What? Yup. Facts. Let’s talk about some of the notes, on the nose, this is like a freshly buttered croissant drizzled with a melted Terry’s chocolate orange. On the palate, it’s rich, with a fantastic mouth feel. Imagine a whisky filled Werthers Original caramel candy, with a finish that brings out some oak and pepper. This bottle is a part of @boutiqueywhisky ‘s core range, so hopefully we’ll continue to see it available in Alberta occasionally. I’ve heard it’s going to be available soon, and you should definitely grab one! Neck Pour Perspective TBWC Canadian Corn 8 yr old 100% oloroso matured 45.8% abv 70cl unchillfiltered natural colour Not quite knowing what to expect can be a good thing sometimes. On first contact the nose isn’t giving much away. On the palate however it’s punchy for the abv and interesting in a good way. For the price (£37) it’s a good, easy sipping dram and I’ll be getting to know it better over the coming months. First impressions are good mouthfeel, light oak, vanilla fudge, maple syrup, dates, raisins, medium long finish. always only the best at the @tipsymidgie 💜 11-year-old @caolila.distillery, 48.1%, @boutiqueywhisky. at a lower cask strength ABV, drams like these are great ones to start the night off with when the plan is to sample more - a gentler kick while still benefitting from its astringent properties. the astringency of a lower in ABV cask strength dram can be a delightful surprise, which is what i've discovered thanks to @whiskyforager's varied recommendations. 🤩 ~ sampling whiskies as part of my explorations of the @whiskybaba.in research: neural bio-hacking by accessing astringency (or the kaṣāya rasa) through refined malt profiles per Āyurvedic algorithms ~

I know I know....another grain whisky post from the Dark Cloud.....yes. but this one is deserved!! Do you see the age statement big and proud...yeah 30 years old. Do you see the big bold title "Blended Grain Scotch Whisky" and then do you see who released this? Yup @boutiqueywhisky Now what you might not notice....first this bottle is 700ml...and you might be thinking to yourself "self I thought boutique-y only released in 500ml bottles?..." well they do. But they have a new "core range" that will be available year round and consistently released and all the core is now in 700ml bottles. Second...and this you'll never learn from this photo is that it's incredibly priced in Alberta between 100 and 120 bucks!!! For a THIRTY YEAR AGE STATEMENT!! And third you may notice this bottle isn't full. Well that's because it's so damn tasty I can't help myself. So only being 37 days into 2024 I will say this bottle is already topping early lists for the Dark Cloud Whisky Best of 2024 lists. Grain whisky, biggest surprises, Best value, and I could go on. Day 10 in the Dark Cloud Whisky Best of 2023 Awards and we visit a region in Scotland that some just rave about and one I am slowly coming around to. This is my top 3 Campbelltown whiskies from 2023. Taking the third spot is the latest in a line up I absolutely adore. Triple distilled and full maturation in Oloroso casks. The limited edition 12 year Hazelburn from @springbank1828 . Each release in this series has differed which I love and this 12 year is the youngest one so far but also one of my favourite in the series. Dark, dank, oily, fruity, earthy and so so delicious. The runner up is from @smwscanada and was released originally in the UK to coincide with the annual Campbelltown festival for 2022. It reached Canada this year and was one of the most standout drams from the entire year for 2023 from smws for me. Not a single cask but a rare release from I'm guessing 3 casks. An 8 year Glen Scotia that changes with time and water and each sip. Aptly named "Changes Faster Than a Chameleon" this is incredibly oily and huge hits of coastal influence even hint at some smoke but no peat was actually used. Love this bottle a ton! And the winner of Campbelltown Whisky of the Year... a 24 year Blended Malt from @boutiqueywhisky . Simply called "Soup Town" (get it....) this is batch 1 of the blend. Unknown exactly what goes into the blend the beat guess is this is a teaspooned Glen Scotia. What I can confirm is this is a well rounded, flavourful, delicious whisky. I have jumped in with both feet on Glen Scotia over the past year or so and to be able to have a fairly well aged version on my shelf is always a great option. There you have it. Drink up Grinches!!! I popped this bottle last night while playing Nintendo Switch Sports and absolutely destroyed the kids!! Another interesting fact is this turns out to be one of the best whiskies I've tasted this year. A 28 year Cambus single grain bottle by @boutiqueywhisky at a cask strength of 50.9% and coming from what I assume is an ex-bourbon barrel. It's no secret I adore the now closed Cambus and the grain whisky that was produced there. This one is one of the best ones I have ever had! This young whisky has been matured in an ex-sherry cask, with a Bourbon cask finish - the opposite of how single malts tend to be crafted. 🇩🇪: Destillerie Ralf Hauer, Germany Expression: Single Malt Aged: 4 Years ABV: 64.1% Rating: 6/10 (GIVE IT A BURL) 👃 Light in colour as you might expect from something is this young. Some earthy and sweet nectar notes, but not smoky. 👅 Quite hot and spicy, I mean the abv is pretty high. White chocolate, orange and even some gingerbread flavours. Overall though short finish. Not a lot of detail about this bottling so straight to the notes we go. 🇮🇪: Ireland Expression: Single Malt Grain No.1 Aged: 8 Years ABV: 44.1% Rating: 3/10 (YEAH NAH, YAH FLAMIN’ GALAH) 👃 Super light in colour, the nose is just the same, super faint, only slightly aromatic like a fresh fruity soap. Also get some butteriness like opening a bag of crisps. 👅 The flavour is just as unassuming, too light for my liking. Takes a few sips to build a profile, I get cereal and toasted butter bread and hints of oak. To say I’m disappointed would be an understatement. Racking up the FF miles here, let’s go back to Scotland. Tonight we have Inchfad, which gets its name from an island in the south-east of Loch Lomond. It enjoyed a short-lived release as one of a number of single cask bottlings released by the Loch Lomond distillery in the mid-2000s. 🏴: Inchfad, Scotland Expression: Single Malt, Batch 2 Aged: 13 Years ABV: 49.5% Rating: 7.5/10 (HEAPS GOOD) 👃 Decent peat and smoke on the nose. Label says malt and fruit cannot be beat especially with some heavy peat. Sums it up nicely. 👅 Orange citrus, oak and toasted marshmallows. Lingering coffee and tobacco finish, but overall well balanced. Not about the vanilla and oak though, 24 years is a loooooooong time for a bourbon so yes, we’re expecting oak. It’s definitely there but not as bad as 24 years suggests. A little trip to the states was fun, but now it’s a looooooong trek to New Zealand where you actually lose a day IRL, but for the sake of this calendar we stay the course. This release has been matured in ex-red wine casks and was from the most southerly distillery in the world. For reasons unknown to me the distillery closed in 1997, so stock would be getting low now. 🇳🇿: Willowbank, New Zealand Expression: Single Blended, Batch 2 Aged: 18 Years ABV: 50.5% Rating: 6/10 (GIVE IT A BURL) 👃 Quite fruity like ripe blackberries, dark choc and some smokiness. 👅 The dark malt or chocolate flavours carry on from the nosing, maraschino cherries and smoke linger at the end leaving a dry sensation. Only way to get to the states is jump on a late night 🛩️ and arrive in style, we’re off to Coppersea Distillery which is in the picturesque Hudson Valley of New York, just north of NYC. 🇺🇸: Coppersea, USA Expression: 100% Malted Rye Whiskey, Batch 1 Aged: 3 Years ABV: 49.8% Rating: 5/10 (SHE’LL DO) 👃 Dill, good amounts of dill like dill pickles in the jar. 👅 The mouthfeel on this is spicy, floury and thick, even a little gritty or grainy. The finish however is a little funky, not sure how to put it, maybe like a heavily burnt sugar acidic bitterness, that’s not all that pleasant. It started strong for me, but that finish took it down the rating scale for me sadly.
