High on the majestically named King's Seat Hill, with the even more majestic Ochils rising in the background, sits Clackmannan Tower. Early details of Clackmannan are sketchy, but with a name like that, the hill was probably the site of a royal hunting lodge. We know that in 1359, King David II decided to keep it in the Bruce family by gifting it to his relation, Robert Bruce (not that one). It was most likely Robert who built the core of this castle, although it later doubled in height and had an additional small wing bolted on. Eventually, the fortunes of this Bruce family started to wane and they were forced to sell much of the estate. While everything else was sold, they kept hold of Clackmannan Tower. The last Bruce to live here was the eccentric, fiery Lady Catherine Bruce in the 18th century. She was a staunch Jacobite and held on to her beliefs to the day she died at the grand age of 95. People said that Catherine was living in the past, but in my mind, she was keeping traditions alive. One thing was for sure, Lady Catherine knew how to throw a party. She often held extravagant ceremonies at Clackmannan Tower, where she would knight special guests with a sword once owned by her ancestor King Robert the Bruce. She claimed that as a Bruce, she had a better right to bestow a knighthood than anybody in the royal family down south. The most famous person to receive one of Lady Catherine's honours was the poet Robert Burns in 1787! The castle has a very slight lean to it now. Coal mining took place nearby and the subsidence was so bad the tower actually collapsed. Thankfully, the damaged section was rebuilt and Clackmannan Tower is still standing today, although only open to visitors on special days. The short climb from the village is still worth your time and you get views for miles over the River Forth and the Ochil Hills. Minimalism One from yesterday in Dollar Glen. The waterfall wasn't at full force and I found the surrounding rocks and logs to be distracting, so I opted for a minimalistic long exposure with a 1x1 aspect ratio, which in my opinion, adds some interest to the waterfall. I aimed to be more consistent with posting this year, and planned to post once a week, but this is only the third post of this year, as I've been busy. My first hike of any description, not only for this year, but my first in almost a year where I’ve had to overcome a long fought battle with plantar fasciitis in my left foot. It has been nearly a whole year since I last posted a photo of any sort of waterfall so here’s one to add to the grid (I haven’t actually photographed any waterfalls in months despite having them on my doorstep).
