We left Inverie under a morning haze, the air turning increasingly limpid as we made our way through Gleann Meadail in the rising heat. A slick sheen soon formed on our faces (and various other bits), suncream stinging our eyes from the effort of scaling the steep grassy slopes to reach the ridge that led eastward to the summit of Meall Buidhe. Mist pooled in the valleys below, a nebulous sea. The waves then rose, crashing over the mountainous breakwater and soon everything was submerged in the cloudy swell. A coddling warmth in the atmosphere sustained moods despite the absence of views as we moved on to Luinne Bheinn before dropping to the Mam Barrisdale pass. The boys departed to the pub, the girls decided on the triple. Even in the clag Ladhar Bheinn is magnificent, a sublime craggy ridge that rewards and entertains. What a hike! Aonach Eagach means "Notched Ridge" in Scottish Gaelic. These notchy bits were tower shaped rocks, with very consequential drops either side. I don't have many photos of that stage as was too busy concentrating! One of my goals for this trip was to improve my scrambling skills, and I'd never hiked in Scotland before, so why not try one of the most dangerous ridges on UK mainland 😬 QMD Info: 🧭 7.5 miles, 8hrs total walking (with a few breaks). Route finding over rock, navigation to get off the final Munro in clouds 📌 🏴 Up via Am Bodach, Meallt Dearg, Stob Coire Leith and Sgorr Nam Fiannaidh (2 Munros) ⛅☁️ No wind, started clear and sunny, cloudy halfway accross ridge 🧗🏼♀️Hard terrain. Rock climbing, steep ground scrambling (some say parts are grade 2), undulation. The terrain eased off either side of the bridge....yet plenty of scree and steep areas to contend with! 🔮 Reflections - I was wide awake the night before worried about the possible consequences of this hike. — T H E S T A R A V F I V E — Saturday’s hike was one of my hardest days on the hills in a very long time. The Starav 5 refers to the 5 munros on the eastern side of Glen Etive, to the south of Glen Coe, beginning with Ben Starav. I’d previously hiked the southern 3 Starav munros, which was a challenging enough hike…so I probably should have had an idea for what I was in for! We began at 6am with the steep climb to summit Ben Starav, which involves 1km of ascent in only 3km distance. From there, a significant drop and another steep ascent was required to reach the second munro; the next three ascents became progressively more gradual and less rugged, and we reached the final summit of Meall nan Eun about 10 hours in to the hike. This hike has just about everything: steep, rocky scrambles, boulder fields, ridge traverses, rolling hills and a lovely boggy descent…the only thing it didn’t have was any views 🙄 Nevertheless, it was a fantastic, challenging day with the best group of folks for company! Lamlash’s Bay info … Lamlash is a sheltered bay on the beautiful Isle of Arran, set in the busy waters of the Firth of Clyde. A coastal creature to watch out for on your next Arran trip is the Eurasian otter. Whilst spotting an otter is a relative rarity across the UK, the Isle of Arran is home to quite a significant number, making it a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts. Living in underground burrows called 'holts', otters feed on the bountiful fish found in these waters. Arran hosts a natural stunning environment and the island hosts all of Scotland’s ‘Big Five’ species – with seals, otters, red deer, golden eagles and red squirrels aplenty. Lochranza campsite and golf course is the best place to see the red deer close up. Basking sharks and hump backed whales are just some of the bigger creatures that can be spotted in the surrounding waters. Also beware of adders basking in the sun up the glens (or on Corrie Golf Course!) - and remember they move faster than you can imagine. Goatfell across Brodick Bay, Arran. Heading along to the Brodick to Lamlash path. At 874 metres (2,867 ft), it is one of four Corbetts on the island. Goatfell summit views on a clear day are magnificent with panoramic views across the dramatic granite ridges. The mountain, along with nearby Brodick Castle, is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland. From the boat you can head along the promenade before picking up the Fisherman’s walk and then the ascent from the Cladach Centre 1.5km north of Brodick. From the pink Wineport Bistro the ascent begins. A good path that eventually steepens over rougher terrain leads all the way to the dramatic summit where the granite skyline awaits. The island hosts all of Scotland’s ‘Big Five’ species – with seals, otters, red deer, golden eagles and red squirrels aplenty. Some photos from, and of, the Corbett Ben Tee (Beinn an t-Sìthidh) near Loch Lochy. I caught the bus from Oban to Invergarry on the Easter weekend and met my friend @stephen_fosterr there. We set off up Ben Tee around 4.30pm just making the summit for sunset. It was beautiful but bitterly cold up there! The sunset photos show the hill Gairich which we went up the next day, and also the hill Spidean Mialach where I camped last June. Behind us was the great bulk of Ben Nevis. On the way up we saw very vivid rainbows! On the way to Gairich the next morning (after a stay at the Saddle Mountain Hostel) Ben Tee was shrouded in low lying mist and looked spectacular across the loch, so we had to pull over and take photos! I still have a few mountain days to share, before the snow has completely gone and the hills become a vibrant summer green again! Photo of me by Stephen! Today I walked the Culter Fell circular, covering 4 Donald’s, of which you couldn’t see beyond 50m on each one!🥴 Hence why I got a little lost on the ‘wind farm section’ going in the opposite direction for a few km. Lucky me, a guardian angel 😇, in the form of a worker in a van, appeared from the mist at a very helpful moment as I was considering retracing steps all the way back; he was able to redirect me and show me some maps 🙌🏼 which I was able to help another lost couple with! I was feeling quite lethargic after a pretty active day yesterday 🚴🏻🏃🏻♀️, but kept very much motivated by the story in the book I’m reading. ‘Landlines’ is the 3rd novel in a series by Raynor Winn about how her husbands declining health from a degenerative brain disease is in fact improved with walking. But the walks they go on involve months of wild camping or the occasional luxury of a B&B, enroute of the Cape Wrath trail in northern Scotland, followed by the WHW! Simply because his health was better walking than laying low and unhappy at home. It’s an incredible true story so if you’re needing any motivation to get moving and out walking, even if your health isn’t 100%, then do it. Give it a go. I totally overheated… Not pictured is the extra layer of waterproof trousers that I had over my leggings (that I peeled off far too late), the long sleeve, the fleece, and the rain coat… and me overheating genuinely made me so miserable. What's The Point In Being Fit If You're Not Going To Use It? I was on Instagram the other day and I saw someone ask this exact question, 'What's the point in great fitness if you are not going to use it?'. The concept being that we train and coach people so that our and their bodies are capable of incredible feats. Or to put it another way our aim is to create an environment where people can become functional fit and to be able to overcome any challenge that they are presented with. And when it comes down to it the vast majority of us are not going to be professional athletes so if we aren’t going to enjoy the fitness we have built then why work so hard to do it (outside of the obvious health benefits). Essentially why be functionally fit if we only use it in the gym? The reason it resonates with me personally is because it's the reason why I work hard on my fitness. It's because I want to be able to say yes to every challenge that is put in front of me. If a friend asks if I want to climb a mountain, cycle 100km, go surfing or go spend the day helping them move house I want to be able to say yes without having to worry about how my body will hold up. One of the reasons I coach is because I want to help people be able to do the same and keep saying yes to life for as long as possible. One of the biggest benefits of CrossFit and other functional fitness/ hybrid programmes, in my eyes, is that you get the best of everything, conditioning, strength, power, flexibility, co-ordination and so on and so on. So enjoy it, you work hard in the gym, enjoy the fruits of your labour! Go an watch incredible sunrises having walked to the top of a mountain. Go on a weekend camping and canoeing trip with friends or family. Cycle through the forest and have a picnic in the most remote opening you can find. The Lochaber Traverse 🙌🏔️ Yesterday I took on this epic route alongside @pete01. Starting at the Wee Minister near Spean Bridge, you traverse the Grey Corries, Aonachs, the CMD Arête and finally Ben Nevis, finishing at the Glen Nevis Youth Hostel. It was an epic day: 10hrs 45, 19 miles, and 2,730 metres of ascent. Ben Nevis via the CMD arête ✔️⛰️ Meaning we ticked off another munro yesterday: No.32 - Càrn Mòr Dearg I did Ben Nevis a fair few years ago, via the mountain track but holyyy heck yesterday was the way to do it! I mean, it’s properly relentless and a long old day haha but epic! The dogs stayed at home for this one and for me/yesterdays conditions, it was the right decision - Roshe would have been absolutely fine I’m sure and found his own safe route fine off lead, but I naturally would have been worrying/thinking about him on any of the dodgy bits, coupled with the muggy temps yesterday it wouldn’t have been as fun for him! Lunar would have had to be attached to me the whole way because I wouldn’t trust her not to fall off an edge 😂 and that would have added more thinking having her attached the whole way. By all means, doable with a competent dog, I would have possibly taken Roshe in different weather! We started in lovely weather at the bottom, then the cloud came in as we started our ascent heading up towards Càrn Mòr Dearg, only for it to suddenly break and the epic views over to Ben Nevis appear! We then had a wee inversion moment as well which was the definite boost I needed up the relentless slog of Càrn Dearg Meadhonach 🥵 As is becoming our usual though, the cloud came in again at the summit of CMD and Ben Nevis and the arête disappeared 🤣 It gave a reallyyy eerie feeling heading over the arête, this was still my fav part though - just would have loved some views 😂 The final ascent up Ben Nevis after the arête was pretty brutal, it’s a relentless steep climb up over scree and boulders and was a hands and feet scramble situation at points 😂 From the quiet side of Ben Nevis coming from CMD, it was a total shock to see the crowds of people when we reached the summit 😳 It was still hella misty so you almost didn’t notice to start with, then more and more people just kept appearing 😂 Walk highlands suggests it’s a 10-11 hour day doing this route, and we were right on the nose at 10 hours 😮💨

Goatfell across Brodick Bay, Arran. Heading along to the Brodick to Lamlash path. At 874 metres (2,867 ft), it is one of four Corbetts on the island. Goatfell summit views on a clear day are magnificent with panoramic views across the dramatic granite ridges. The mountain, along with nearby Brodick Castle, is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland. From the boat you can head along the promenade before picking up the Fisherman’s walk and then the ascent from the Cladach Centre 1.5km north of Brodick. From the pink Wineport Bistro the ascent begins. Understandably, The Old Man of Storr is such a tourist hot-spot on Skye, for the obvious reason that it is a direct hike from a main road and is a truly unique and breathtaking place. Whilst it suffers overcrowding during certain times and periods, it doesn't deter me. The landscape is iconic. Yet, what many people may not realise, is go just a little bit further and you're on the Tortternish Ridge proper, all by yourself. Another lovely solo hike & wildcamping mini adventure this weekend. I took the bus to Fortingall (it's a bit of track from Glasgow, but perfect for slow travel for sure and the bonus is a wee break in Aberfeldy 😀) then walked to Inverar. I started the ascent to Carn Gorm fairly late in the afternoon and I wasn't the fastest with all the camping stuff on my back ( note to self : either learn to pack lighter or work harder at the gym🤣). By the time I got to the top, the wind died down a bit and the views were amazing in the late afternoon sunshine. I "bumped" along the ridge and had loads of fun with watching ptarmigans and golden plovers. The views from Cárn Mairg towards both Schiehallion and the Lawers range were absolutely unreal 😍! It was getting late so I decided to camp between Càrn Mairg and Meall Na Aighean. I woke up to the calls of the golden plovers nearby and I saw deer when I managed to get out of my tent. The hills were covered by mist so there wasn't any view on top of Meall na Aighean, but I really enjoyed the walk back down to Inverar, then the walk out in Glen Lyon to Fortingall. Up and out by 7am this morning 🌄 what a beautiful morning it was for a hike. The Pap of Glencoe was our hike of choice, and although only around 700m in height, this is a slog of a Corbet. We decided to go the straight-up route, and it literally was straight up 😮💨 but we were rewarded with some stunning scenery. We saw no one and had the hill to ourselves until we were almost at the bottom owing to the fact we opted for the more commonly used path or ziggy zaggy path as we like to call it 🤣 even that was tough going and we needed to concentrate the whole way, one wrong step and you could fall. Although it wasn't a leisurely stroll, the views and scenery made it 100% worth it.
