*Garden closed Thursday 18th January* Unfortunately, we have had to extend our closure due to icy conditions on Upper Hillfoot Road. Despite being a well used council road, it is sadly not considered a priority route and therefore doesn’t get gritted. We often end up having to close due to the conditions on Upper Hillfoot Road which is a real blow to the charity but the reality of it is, we simply don’t have the means to take care of this ourselves. Clackmannanshire might be the “Wee County” but it has some really interesting historic sites. We visited Sauchie Tower today as part of the Doors Open Day Weekend - a 15th century tower house it is pretty decrepit outside but surprisingly, there are quite a lot of interesting interior details left. Pic 2 is the great hall fireplace and one of the window niches complete with built in cupboard. Love seeing inside buildings which are normally closed to the public. This lump of rock sitting on a pedestal in the middle of Clackmannan town is what gives the entire county its name. This is the Clach (Gaelic for stone) of Mannan. Without many written records, things are a bit vague, but Mannan probably referred to the Celtic Sea God Mannanán. It seems plausible because although it now sits a mile inland, Clackmannan used to be a thriving port. As time went on and the River Forth changed its course, the port became more and more useless. No matter how hard the locals tried to dig their harbour clear of silt, their sea faring days were over. This area around the Firth of Forth was once known as Manaw Gododdin and ruled by Brittonic tribes around 1500-2000 years ago, although very little is known about them. Why this stone would have been associated with their God of the sea is a fascinating mystery. Another entertaining but almost definitely untrue story goes back to Robert the Bruce. Before the stone sat on its plinth, it apparently lay at the side of a long road now called Lookabootye Brae. When King Robert was travelling along this road, he realised that he had left his glove (also known as a mannan) lying on it after stopping to rest. The King wasn't going to go back himself, so his servant would have to retrieve the Mannan from the Clach. The unlucky runner said to the king that he wouldn't be long, so just "Look aboot ye" here in the meantime. The stone and the road were both named from the same event. However, the town was already well known as Clackmannan by then, but why let facts get in the way of a good story? The wee building next to the stone is part of the old tolbooth and jail built in the 16th century because the Sheriff was fed up with holding prisoners in his own house. The thin stone shaft with the ball on top is the market cross. Tradition states that the wearing thin at the bottom is due to prisoners being chained up here awaiting trial before the tolbooth was built. This is a great wee pocket of history lumped together in a great wee pocket of Scotland that not many people visit! #visitscotland #scotland #discoverclackmannanshire #scotlandisnow
Castle Campbell is a medieval castle situated above Dollar and overlooked by the Ochil Hills. It has recently reopened, giving visitors the opportunity to explore. It is only open until the end of September (reopening in April) so if you want to visit make sure to do it before then. Why choose an independent holiday rental over a hotel? A common debate is whether people should book a hotel or a holiday rental when choosing where to stay. There are so many interesting places you can choose to stay whereas most hotel rooms all look alike. Our upside down cottage is a great example of staying somewhere with character! 2 – It feels more like home. Maybe you want a break that doesn’t feel like home but there’s no denying that having access to a kitchen and larger living spaces is convenient and can make for a more relaxing stay! 3 – You get a better feel for your local area. Our cottage is a short walk away from everything Dollar has to offer, you can browse our guest book for recommendations from previous guests or look through your welcome pack for ideas on places to visit. 4 – Its better for families. Instead of having to book more than one room to accommodate everyone, staying somewhere local will give you more space – not to forget the bath toys, games and books we provide too. Situated above the town of Dollar, Dollar Glen offers exhilarating walks, deep gorges, cascading waterfalls and an abundance of plants and wildlife 🌱 The wildlife habitats and geology of the glen have made it a Site of Special Scientific Interest - this title is given to areas of land and water that best represent our natural heritage. There is no entry fee and we would definitely recommend paying it a visit if you are staying with us ❤️ Please note that the woodland paths are unsuitable for wheelchairs or buggies.
