METAL, primarily black and death metal, accompanied me since my youth and is still a part of my work in the studio today. Similar to my painting, this genre of music has a cathartic effect for me. In terms of content and form, metal is a constructive/artist expression of anger and despair. Metal releases positive energy in me and helps me to focus. Unfortunately, emotions like anger are not only in times like these my steady companion, but- also an indispensable driving force. The brutality of that kind of music, the rough and rather unpolished sounds, especially on earlier albums, with the extreme, often barely understandable singing, I try to transfer that into painting since the beginning of my career. The often exaggerated and grotesque self-presentation of many bands, with rivets, leather and occult devotional items, is, in my opinion, evidence of ironic self awareness. That’s exactly how I see my own work, and want it to be read. It is considered by many to be "the first true death metal record," while others consider that to be Seven Churches by Possessed. The late and legendary Chuck Schuldiner, the band’s founder and leader, performed guitar, bass and vocals, and composed all tracks on the album. Certain songs on the album were inspired by horror movies. "Regurgitated Guts" was inspired by the 1980 film City of the Living Dead, "Beyond the Unholy Grave" was influenced by the 1981 film The Beyond, and "Zombie Ritual" was inspired by the 1979 film Zombie, all of which were directed by Lucio Fulci. Death - Spiritual Healing At some point after the recording of Leprosy, Terry Butler joined Death as the bassist of the band. After Death toured to promote Leprosy in 1988, Rick Rozz was fired from the band & he re-joined Massacre (which has an ex-member of Death, Kam Lee on vocals) in 1989. James Murphy (who would later play in Obituary, Cancer & Testament) replaced Rick on guitars. Death went back to Morrisound Studios to record Spiritual Healing, which was released as their third album in 1990. The production on Spiritual Healing is almost identical Leprosy, with the exception of the snare having less reverb to it & Chuck's vocals seem to have a certain effect on them, but its nothing too distracting anyway. Apart from that, his vocals are a bit lower pitched & the instrumentation on Spiritual Healing takes a mid-paced approach, while showing hints of technicality in some of the riffs & soloing as well as a little presence of odd time signatures. Speaking of the guitar solos, they are more melodic thanks to James Murphy's guitar playing style. He also shines on songs like Within the Mind, which has a hypnotic riff at the beginning of the song & he even traded off solos with Chuck in Low Life, which is one of the most memorable moments from this album. Lyrical themes has also went through a change, from being gory, horror-themed to socially aware ones such as drug addiction, mental disorders & faith healers, where the latter three is the theme of the title track's lyrics. A thrashy, chuggy riff from Legion of Doom was reused during the chorus of the song & a short, faint keyboards (which was played by Eric Greif) can be heard in the background after the chorus of the song. To be honest, I feel like Spiritual Healing doesn't get enough love from fans, probably due to it being not as fast as Leprosy, along with the change in lyrical themes as well as the fact that Spiritual Healing is a transitional album containing technical elements that Death would fully explore on Human, which is considered as one of the most defining albums in techdeath.

Usually someone has to expire before that happens, and sure enough, that was the case here, morbidly enough. ****** DEFIANCE - Product Of Society (1989, Roadracer) ******* One of the most enduring hallmarks of thrash metal over the past four decades has been the cover art of Ed Repka. This cover is one of his more eye-catching designs in my opinion, and I really like the contrast of the logo and main image against the shadowy background. The creature reminds me of character Sloth from The Goonies, which coincidentally was released a couple years prior to this LP. Spiritual Healing concluyó una trilogía de discos de Death que delinean el nacimiento de un género y presentan la portada infantilmente provocativa y sangrienta del siempre popular #EdRepka. Este trabajo cerró el segundo capítulo de la carrera de la banda (el primero consistió en un período de demostración de autodescubrimiento inusualmente prolongado), preparando así el escenario para el inminente pico creativo de #ChuckSchuldiner quien comenzó a experimentar con tempos #progressivemetal secuencias de riffs consistentemente intrigantes, cambios para acompañar partes melódicas y solos mucho más abundantes intercambiados entre Schuldiner y #JamesMurphy creando las bases del llamado #technicaldeathmetal que se reflejaría mejor en sus siguientes producciones. Líricamente el disco mostro también un cambio, ya que Chuck comenzó a tratar temas sociales como asesinos en serie o adicción a las drogas alejándose de los temas gore y horror de trabajos anteriores. El álbum recibió críticas sorprendentemente mixtas. Por un lado, estaba el contingente de metal más conservador y extremo al que le molestaba el sacrificio del puro salvajismo musical del álbum en nombre de una producción más limpia, una mejor musicalidad y evidentes refinamientos en la composición de canciones; y, por el otro, los oyentes más progresistas que lo adoptaron por las mismas razones. 6 Février 1989 (35 ans aujourd'hui) ...Product of Society...premier album du groupe Thrash Metal d'Oakland aux USA...Defiance a sorti cet album alors que la niche du thrash metal de la Bay Area était saturée et sur le point de s'éteindre... mais ils ne le savaient pas encore... Bien que de nombreux groupes aient imité le son des autres, Defiance, sans être complètement original, était l'un des groupes les plus tolérables...l'album est sorti sur Roadracer Records! Les quelques personnes qui ont entendu parler de ce groupe décrivent leur son comme étant similaire à celui de Testament, ce qui, je pense, est un commentaire juste avec un vocal qui me fait penser à Forbidden sur quelques intonations.. L'album offre une portion moyenne de thrash metal : des riffs en sourdine nonchalants, un bon travail de guitare solo et des chansons généralement assez bonnes... L'album a été produit par un certain Jeff Waters guitariste d'Annihilator (Cependant, le groupe n'était pas du tout satisfait de sa production, qui sonne très finement et enlève le crunch thrash metal qui donne à la musique son identité tonale) La pochette a été dessiné par Ed Repka (Megadeth, Death, Nuclear Assault ect..)...ce premier album est beaucoup plus direct dans le style tech thrash metal par rapport à leurs autres albums, qui auront un son plus progressif/complexe! #35thanniversary #defiance #productofsociety #1989 #thrashmetal #technicalthrashmetal #roadracerrecords #jeffwaters #edrepka
