On March 29, 2024 we went to the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton to spend Good Friday. On this visit we arranged for the tours of the house. This was well worth the wait to see. Our knowledgeable guide led us through the two homes that were the residences and school rooms for the students who came to be taught by St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Part of the tour included seeing the altar where a miracle occurred (child cured of leukemia) and seeing the entrance to her crypt. We had a simple picnic lunch, explored the museum and concluded our day with the Good Friday service. We went on a hike at a local state park before driving back home. It was a great way to spend Good Friday learning about the first American born saint. #elizabethannseton

National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Emmitsburg, MD I know this is not for everyone, but I went to @setonshrine a few days ago, to learn about the history of the first American born Saint, Elizabeth Ann Seton. She was born in New York but moved to Emmitsburg later in life (she was a widow at 29 with 5 children) where she founded Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s, the first community for religious women established in the US. She was canonized in 1975, and her remains are entombed in the Basilica. I went with my 1 year old and 4 year old - they were very welcoming, but I will have to go back by myself if I actually want to read anything (since my son was not interested in a single thing) or for one of their special events: Hands-On History! Every 2nd and 4th Saturday, 11am & 2pm Discover life during Mother Seton times through activities, crafts, or games. Fun for all ages; Free! Living History Experience Fridays 2 PM – 4:30 PM Saturdays 10 AM – 4:30 PM Step back in time to the year 1818 at St. Joseph’s Academy, and engage with our living history interpreters, including our Junior History Interpreters who portrays real students from Mother Seton’s time. Visitor center & museum open daily 10-5 (We only saw a fraction of what they have - I would say you need 2+ hours if you want to see everything) 339 South Seton Avenue Emmitsburg, MD 21727-9297 Also, this is totally separate from the shrine at Mount St. Mary's college nearby. That is the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. Today is the feast day of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, wife, mother, educator, and founder of the Sisters of Charity. Since her mother passed away early, Seton looked to Virgin Mary as her own mother and was devoted to our Lady. She was raised Episcopalian, but asked Mother Mary to guide her to the true faith and converted to Catholicism later in her life. She suffered the deaths of many loved ones which brought her closer to God. She made the first free Catholic school in America and continued to build many free schools and orphanages. She took a vow of chastity, poverty, and obedience and founded the Sisters of Charity where she became Mother Seton. She is recognized as the first canonized saint to be born in the United States. She is the patron saint of Catholic schools, orphans, seafarers, those facing in-law troubles, and widows. #saint #elizabethannseton #sistersofcharity #mothermary #catholic #choosingfaithabovefear #cfaf

Today marks the feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. She shows us a courageous example of following God's will for our lives, even in the face of loss and hardship. She first married, then upon her husband's passing, joined the Catholic Church & the religious life. During her time as a sister, she founded the Sisters of Charity. She was also a pioneer for Catholic education in America, known as the founder of the parochial school system. With God's grace, she found the "next step" in every chapter of her life through discernment, a process largely founded upon prayer. In our lives, it is of the utmost importance to foster a strong prayer life so as to know His most good and gracious will for our lives. Relating the Holy Scriptures & lives of the Saints to our own lives is a helpful way to bolster our prayer. After all, the Saints themselves walked a path much like our own, and God gave us revelation to relate to our own lives. On this day, pray for your own discernment & the comfort of all widows. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first native-born American saint, born in New York City in 1774. She was raised in the Episcopal Church and married a wealthy businessman with whom she had five children. After her husband's death, SHE CONVERTED TO CATHOLICISM and founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph's, the first Catholic girls' school in the United States and the first American congregation of religious sisters. THREE BASIC POINTS LED TO HER BECOMING CATHOLIC: 1- belief in the Real Presence, 2- devotion to the Blessed Mother, and 3- conviction that the Catholic Church led back to the apostles and to Christ. Many of her family and friends rejected her when she became a Catholic in March 1805. Despite facing many challenges and hardships, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton dedicated her life to serving others and spreading God's love. At the young age of 46, she died in 1821. She was only Catholic for about 16 years. She was canonized in 1975 and is remembered as a tireless advocate for education and social justice and as a faithful servant of God. God can use us all if you let Him. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, pray for us. #saintoftheday #saints #catholicsaints #elizabethannseton #catholic #catholicfaith #catholicwomen #catholicconnect #catholicfaith #catholiceducation

Elizabeth Ann Seton lost her beloved husband very young. While in Italy still hoping for his recovery, she met many Catholics and decided she wanted to convert when she returned home to the United States. Despite her grief and the loss of some of her children also, she was strong and faithful and was able to continue, and even began many schools after joining religious life. She was the first American Saint to be canonized and is the patron of education. Don’t forget that today, you can use the code “2024feast” for 15% off all Elizabeth Ann Seton prints! She was not a mystic or stigmatic. She did not prophesy or speak in tongues. She had two great devotions: abandonment to the will of God and an ardent love for the Blessed Sacrament. She wrote to a friend, Julia Scott, that she would prefer to exchange the world for a “cave or a desert.” “But God has given me a great deal to do, and I have always and hope always to prefer his will to every wish of my own.” Her brand of sanctity is open to everyone if we love God and do his will” (FranciscanMedia.org). #YanktonBenedictines #Monastery #Pray #Prioress

“Elizabeth Ann Seton is a saint. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is an American. All of us say this with special joy, and with the intention of honoring the land and the nation from which she sprang forth as the first flower in the calendar of the saints. Elizabeth Ann Seton was wholly American! Rejoice for your glorious daughter. Be proud of her. And know how to preserve her fruitful heritage.” –Pope Paul VI Elizabeth was born in New York City in 1774 to a prominent Episcopal family. She married young at 19 to William Seton, a wealthy businessman, in 1794. They had five children before her husband suddenly died of tuberculosis in 1803 in Italy. While there Elizabeth discovered the beauty of the Catholic faith. She returned to New York in 1805 and was fully initiated into the Catholic Church. She eventually moved to Emmitsburg, Maryland founding the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph's, the first community for religious women founded in the United States. She also founded two Catholic schools and two orphanages. And despite her personal affliction with tuberculosis, she continued to guide her children and live a spiritually prolific life for Christ. She passed away in 1821 having only been Catholic for 16 years. During her tenure, she blessed so many people and gave a legacy for future generations to follow. She was beatified by Pope John XXIII in 1963 and canonized in 1975 by Pope Paul VI. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, you are a saint for our time: You are a woman of faith, for a time of doubt and uncertainty; you are a woman of love, for a time of coldness and division; you are a woman of hope, for a time of crisis and discouragement. Intercede for the Church and for our country. Blessed Memorial of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton! “I will go peaceably and firmly to the Catholic Church for if Faith is so important to our salvation, I will seek it where the true Faith first began, seek it among those who received it from God himself.” “God is everywhere, in the very air I breathe, yes everywhere, but in His Sacrament of the Altar He is as present actually and really as my soul within my body; in His Sacrifice daily offered as really as once offered on the Cross.” “The heart preparing to receive the Holy Eucharist should be like a crystal vase.” St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, pray for us! #saintoftheday #sharethefaith #stelizabethannseton #saintelizabethannseton #elizabethannseton #setonhall #americansaint #americansaints

January 4: Elizabeth Ann Seton of New York and Maryland (28 August 1774-4 January 1821) was a Catholic religious sister and educator. She was born in New York, and her mother died when she was 3. Her father and stepmother later separated and she lived with her uncle, in a difficult and contemplative part of her life. She married at 19 and she and her husband were prominent in Trinity Episcopal Church in New York. She was involved in care for those in poverty and sickness. Around the War of 1812, they took in her husband's 6 younger siblings, in addition to their own 5 children. He died of tuberculosis amid the stress of the economic situation at the time, the war, and the family. Elizabeth was cared for and influenced by his Italian business partners and joined the Roman Catholic Church. She had started an academy for young ladies but students left due to her conversion. She met a priest and followed him to Maryland to help start a religious school. She also helped establish a community of religious sisters there dedicated to care and education for those in poverty. We thank God for Elizabeth's life and ask the Holy Spirit to form us to be like Jesus, concerned for the needs of those in poverty. Elizabeth Ann Bayley was born just two years shy of the American Revolution. She grew up in New York’s high society before marrying William Seton in 1794. When Elizabeth’s father-in-law died, the Setons found themselves responsible for Williams younger siblings and the family business, but tragedy would not stop there. William’s health began to decline along with the family business and shortly after filing for bankruptcy the Setons headed to Italy in an attempt to save William’s life. Unfortunately, Elizabeth would find herself a widow. It was in Italy, however, that she found a renewed comfort and hope in God. Upon her return to the United States she began to found schools and laid the foundation of Catholic education in America. She also, along with other women, found- ed a religious order. Mother Seton died of Tubercu- losis in 1821 and was canonized in 1975. “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.” (Psalm 23:1-3) #jordanaveryart #elizabethannseton #catholicart #christianart #catholic #christian
