To celebrate #EarthDay, this week's #MondayMaker is Swiss artist Klaus Littmann 🌿 Over the course of his impressive career, Littmann has undertaken an array of unique, groundbreaking projects, each of which is underlaid by a dichotic tension highlighting his preoccupation with everyday culture and the confrontation between contemporary art and urban spaces. His temporary art intervention "For Forest" (2019) is perhaps his most ambitious creation to date, involving the temporary planting of 299 trees on the football field of the Klagenfurt Wörthersee Stadium in Austria in order to challenge people's perception of nature whilst "reminding us that nature, which we so often take for granted, may someday only be found in specially designated spaces, as is already the case with animals in zoos." Though smaller in scale, Littmann's "Arena for a tree" is nevertheless equally impactful. Currently moored in Venice on the occasion of the 60th International Art Biennale, it masterfully combines architecture, sculpture and stage into a spacial concept. The installation is a further development of my project „FOR FOREST - The Unending Attraction of Nature“, Austria’s largest public art installation, in which 299 trees up to 14 metres tall were planted on the football pitch in the Wörthersee Stadium in Klagenfurt in 2019. „Arena for a Tree“ also focuses on the topics of nature, sustainability and climate change. Venice is the third and final destination, following Basel (2021) and Zurich (2022) in the courtyard of the Swiss National Museum – and the first to incorporate water as another important environmental element. Today in a week, on April 16th, the temporary art intervention for the opening of the 60th International Art Exhibition will be inaugurated. Inspired by the main exhibition of the Biennale entitled „Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere“, „Arena for a Tree“ explores themes of migration and identity. Over entire geological eras, the „Bald Cypress“ (Taxodium distichum), which plays a prominent role in the installation, was native to various regions of the world. While its current habitat mainly covers large parts of Central and South America, the impending spectre of global warming indicates that it could also gain a foothold in Europe. “For Forest”, an installation of 299 trees in the Wörthersee stadium in Klagenfurt, Austria. Curator Klaus Littmann said the purpose of the installation was to make people think about humanity’s impact on the environment, and that maybe one day seeing trees could be a rare spectacle, like going to a football match or looking at animals in a zoo. Klaus tried bringing the idea to fruition first in Switzerland, France and Germany, but none of the football teams he approached would let their stadiums be used. He succeeded in Klagenfurt because the local football team there was “so bad” at the time that it could not fill the stadium’s 30,000 seats, he added, so local authorities were happy to let him use it.

Since 2013, Enzo Enea has been collecting contemporary art, which is exhibited at the Tree Museum. Each of his works is related to nature and the environment, inviting viewers to reflect on the relationship between man and nature and seek solutions for this interaction’s future design. In 2019, international attention was triggered by the collaboration on FOR FOREST, Austria’s most significant art installation in public space, in which 299 trees, up to 14 meters high, were set up in the Wörthersee football stadium to form a mixed forest. In the same year, Enea began a partnership with Art Basel and presented the nature installation “Use and Abuse.” The roots of eight olive trees, up to 1000 years old, were symbolically laced with a tethering technique and placed in the exhibition hall. This installation questioned the relationship between ecology, man and nature. The collaboration with the world’s most important art fair continued in 2022, and in 2023, Enea presented “Treetopia” − a forest of the future in the central circular courtyard of the fair. This large-scale installation pointed to the kind of trees that will be resilient to global warming in the next 20 years − the growing season of a tree – and are destined for the continental climate. Art and Architecture No: 138 For Forest – The Unending Attraction of Nature Location: Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, Austria Year: 2019 Artist: Klaus Littmann For Forest – The Unending Attraction of Nature" was a temporary art intervention by Klaus Littmann that transformed the Wörthersee football stadium in Klagenfurt into Austria’s largest public art installation from 8 September – 27 October 2019. Using 300 trees, some of which weigh up to six tonnes, landscape architect Enzo Enea covered the entire playing field with a mixed forest characteristic of Central Europe. From the grandstands, visitors could admire the spectacle of the trees day and night (from 10am until 10pm). Admission was free. A sight that was as unfamiliar as it was fascinating and stirred up a range of emotions and reactions! Depending on the time of day (or night), the trees constituted a constantly changing landscape that was shaped by the weather as well as the autumnal turning of the leaves. The installation was a clever play on our emotions when faced with what should be a familiar sight, placed in an entirely different context. With this monumental work of art, Littmann challenged our perception of nature and sharpened our awareness of the future relation between nature and humankind. Urban Green - Art - Design" at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln (MAKK) focuses on the tree. The tree has a fundamental significance for urban space and greenery in the city. In the same way, however, the tree also serves as a source of inspiration and material for design and art. "Between the Trees" brings these aspects together and conveys an awareness of the essential significance of trees as a form of life and for life on earth, using a total of 19 positions by international designers and artists as examples. The tree is representative of the richness of nature. The selected projects and works present the tree as a material, functional and aesthetic inspiration. Considered are positions from the fields of conceptual design, industrial design, arts and crafts and free art. The temporary arena is part of the exhibition «In the Forest. A Cultural History».
