Free download codes: Bright Islands - Bright Islands - Five Songs (EP) The initial physical format release from Bright Islands, titled “Five Songs”, is a compilation of the debut release “EP” (June 2023) and the follow up “Tomorrow” (December 2023). The music has its roots firmly in the indie / guitar pop camp, with musical textures and songwriting influenced by artists from both sides of the pond. Bright Islands is the solo project of Mike Simms who lives near Liverpool, UK. Mike’s formative years were spent listening to The John Peel Show and to some extent, the indie aesthetic might be apparent in the efforts of Bright Islands to date. All of the tracks on “Five Songs” were written, recorded and mixed at home; Anne Marie Howard made a guest appearance, providing backing vocals for four of the songs. The first releases were well received, and the audience for Bright Islands is slowly (but surely) growing. It is a frustration of most independent musicians I know that we are expected to be “content creators” rather than artists, and that quantity of work produced is often valued over quality. There is a huge pressure to be prolific, to the degree that I have even heard various “gurus” promote ideas like musicians releasing tracks every week, or even every day, in order to be seen as productive and gain attention. On the flip side, there is often an internal pressure as an artist to create as much work as possible and to put it out there, in whatever state. While that is often driven by a genuine desire to make things and to share them, the trade off is that by producing work in bulk, the ability put the time into polishing and developing work to be as good as possible simply doesn’t exist anymore. This also presents a problem when it’s time to release music commercially, which is that if you’ve been giving it all out for free, how do you make your released music special enough to make people want to pay for it? How do you keep people interested enough to know when you’re releasing music for sale? And lastly, how do you choose what should get the bells and whistles, and what gets shelved? I’ve noticed many new artists out there releasing recordings commercially that would never have seen the light a day only a few years ago, simply because of the pressure to put SOMETHING out there so that people can hear you. This is rock on the other side of the hard place of the expense necessary to record and produce high quality music that would be considered acceptable at the industry level. There’s no good solution for this conundrum, but if anyone wants my opinion, I’d rather see the artists that I follow release less music and make the effort to put their best foot forward each time. Demos are great, and we need them to capture our music in its infancy, but you wouldn’t let an infant or child try to live like an adult. Songs, just like kids, need time to grow up and develop and become their best versions. #tuesdaytips

Placebo is one of the bands I have seen the most, all over Europe, on tiny stages, at festivals, you name it. I have always loved them but now and again lost interest, and I remember getting the tickets because “hey It’s Placebo we have to.” Already walking into the completely filled up Ahoy venue didn’t feel good.
