The 246 Years Project is a Morven Park initiative dedicated to providing access to the names and life events of individuals enslaved between 1619-1865 through a custom-built database. On May 1st, 2024, we hosted our advocacy event, Dark Skies: Lights Out for Migratory Birds. At the event, our guest speakers gave in-depth talks on how artificial light at night disorients migrating birds and can lead to devastating effects on flocks – and how Lights Out campaigns reduce the amount of artificial nighttime light and can help protect migratory birds! Tom Blackburn, Advocacy Chair at the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia, talked about how during spring migration, birds migrating at night are dependent on dark skies to keep their course as they move north to return to nesting grounds. “Unh, my dearest darling. I offer you my heart..” Veronica and Colin tied the knot of Saturday. It might have been a rainy day but it was still perfect. In fact, these two got engaged in the rain, so the weather was exactly what it needed to be! Veronica looked so gorgoeus, with such an old Hollywood glam style. The ceremony took place in the backyard of Colin’s family home and we were surrounded by beautiful gardens. Sharing an inspiring story about a @tolministries partner who, after reaching out to our food pantry for help, let us in on some of his life circumstances. He’ a life-long Loudoun resident, and is dealing with terminal stomach cancer. Despite his situation, the volunteers were amazed at his positivity and friendliness. They also noticed a large collection of #artwork and discovered that Gary is a talented artist and previously had a studio in Leesburg. His unique and beautiful paintings include native-Loudoun vistas, portraits, and African American themes. As TOL continued to develop a relationship with Gary and assist him with food and necessities such as warmer clothing, a volunteer, @susanne.horn.98 started working to help Gary have his art displayed locally. Gary’s art is currently on display now through the end of the month at the Loudoun Visitor Center. Gary’s excitement at having his work recognized again has given him a new sense of hope for the future even in the midst of his difficulties. We are so grateful for our dedicated #volunteers who truly have a heart to serve those in need, develop relationships, and have been committed to helping Gary.
