Ghost - Opus Eponymous (October 18th, 2010) From progressive rock, we go to modern occult rock/heavy metal/hard rock/ glam metal/whatever rock. Ghost was formed back in 2006 by mastermind Tobias Forge, and released their debut album a few years later. All unnamed ghouls at the time, with Tobias being played as “Papa Emeritus”, the debut started the mystique and the lore of the band. Who were they? What were they all about? Were they satanists? My answer is who the hell cares? The debut album freaking rules! It is actually, quite honestly, my least favored album by the guys. That should tell you how strong this discography is. My only issue is the overreliance on the “satan” lyrical matter and the production being a little more raw for a band like Ghost. Yes I understand that a band has to start somewhere and you mostly get shit production on your first record, but knowing what they became later it just seems too harsh. These guys meld heavy metal, thrash, hard rock, occult and glam like no other and add in shock better than most. Songs I’d recommend are “Con Clavi Con Dio”, “Elizabeth “Ritual”, and “Death Knell”. Opus Eponymous didn’t chart. Six Feet Under: Killing for Revenge (2024) Music: 3/10 Artwork: 7/10 The phenomenon of cringe is omnipresent in our societies, and we all have the occasional misfortune to be in a cringe situation where we feel embarrassment for another person. An uncomfortable heat flush penetrates the chest, the heart rate increases, and a rush of sweat overcomes our bodies. But, is it possible that cringe can actually make our bodies twitch out of embarrassment? This was my experience with Six Feet Under’s previous album “Nightmares of the Decomposed”, arguably one of the most terrible death metals records of all times. Chris Barnes’ abysmal vocals were the main driver behind that shit show, with the “EEEEEEEE” giving me actual physical twitches, almost like involuntary muscle spasms, because of how painfully cringe it was. And yet, Six Feet Under, who can still rely on a die-hard fanbase, continue with their brutish, caveman death metal with the release of “Killing for Revenge”, which overall is an improvement, but definitely still not good either. Sure, there are some cool, energetic riffs like on the thrashy “Judgement Day”, but Chris Barnes’ vocals just drag the album down. If the record were a raw instrumental album, I would have increased my rating maybe to a 5 or 6, but Barnes’ grunts and barks give the impression that his voice is physically broken, sometimes not even being able to keep up the pace, as if out of tune. Fortunately, there are no more pig squeals. But to be honest: despite the improvements compared to “Nightmare of the Decomposed” and other previous abominations, the record remains one-dimensional and uninspired, a generic accumulation of random death metal elements, which are pulled down even further by weak vocal performances from a dude who recently ranted about how dead the genre is. This is particularly outrageous because hisvocals are consistently flat and out of place. The track “Neanderthal” hits rock bottom. This primitive cut of uga-uga destruction is nothing more than a below-generic, embarrassing slab of high school death metal, with staggering silly lyrics, more terrible vocals and unimaginative instrumentation. Terrasite is the eighth studio album by American death metal band Cattle Decapitation. It was released on May 12, 2023, via Metal Blade Records. Terrasite was recorded in San Diego with producer Dave Otero. Album artwork was by Wes Benscoter. My favorite songs are "Terrasitic Adaptation", "We Eat Our Young", "Scourge Of The Offspring", "The Insignificants" and "A Photic Doom". Cattle Decapitation is a band that I respect enormously for their great quality in their trajectory and this album seems to me the best of their musical career. A concept album. The title is a word invented by Travis Ryan himself that joins 'Terra-' which means 'earth' and 'site' which evolves from the Greek word '-sitos' which means 'food'. If we join both, we get 'earth eater', as a metaphor for the role of mankind in the destruction of the planet, and it is also a very well brought and very appropriate play on words: 'parasite'.
