Title: "Bridging Physical Wellness and Mental Health Through Therapy" When it comes to our health, we often compartmentalize it into physical and mental realms, rarely considering the two in tandem. However, the intersection of exercise and physical therapy with mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) offers a comprehensive approach to overall well-being. Physical therapy, designed to restore and maintain mobility, can be significantly enhanced when coupled with regular exercise. Exercise not only strengthens the body, but also stimulates the production of endorphins, the body's natural mood elevator. It is an underutilized antidepressant, a powerful tool for combating stress, anxiety, and depression. Meanwhile, mindfulness, the practice of being present and engaged in the moment, is a core component in cognitive-behavioral therapy. CBT is a highly effective, evidence-based approach to treating a range of mental health disorders. It helps us to challenge and change our thought patterns, empowering us to respond to life's stressors in healthier ways. When we combine these therapies, we create a potent blend for holistic wellness. Exercise and physical therapy can help us feel more comfortable and confident in our bodies, which can lead to a more positive body image and outlook, elements that couple well with the mental and emotional growth fostered by CBT. Incorporating mindfulness into our exercise routines can also deepen the benefits. By tuning into our body's movements and our breath, we create a meditative state that can reduce stress and enhance our mental clarity. Therefore, integrating physical therapy and exercise with mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral therapy can foster a more balanced, holistic approach to health and wellness. We are not just bodies, we are not just minds – we are complex beings who thrive when our physical and mental health are in sync. #HolisticWellness #MindBodyTherapy #IntegratedHealthcare

Over the last month, I've been talking a lot about how we feel about our bodies. I've talked about society's expectations of us and the pressure we can feel to conform to constantly shifting standards. I've talked about our warped view of what healthy looks like and means. How our body image can impact our relationship with intimacy. And how easy it is to waste energy constantly worrying about the way we look. Now I'd like to close out this month's #MonthlyMusings topic with gratitude for my body. I'm grateful that my body allows me to connect with the earth, the ground and nature. That it carries me from one destination to another. And gives me the ability to experience surfing, hiking and the pleasurable feelings that come with those. My body is a wonder. Yours is too. What are you grateful it can do? As a psychotherapist, I've seen how, in our fast-paced, high-stress culture, understanding the language of our body is not just beneficial; it's essential. The ability to feel and, therefore, distinguish a clear 'yes' or 'no' from within ourselves can change your life. This skill is one aspect of somatic awareness, and it's a skill that develops and deepens over time with practice. Our body's signals can become muddled in a chaotic world filled with chronic and short-term stressors. It's a shared experience to feel disconnected from the body and, therefore, feel disconnected from what an authentic 'yes' or a 'no' feels like. Due to lifelong conditioning to prioritize safety, attachment, or acceptance over our authentic feelings; many of us might find ourselves particularly estranged from recognizing a 'no.' But acknowledging and honouring this inner voice is critical in caring for ourselves. Feeling our 'no' helps usin setting boundaries, honoring our needs, and aligning with our deepest desires. This journey begins with a simple, yet powerful practice: tuning in to how we differentiate a 'no' from a 'yes.' A 'no' might present itself as a physical discomfort, an emotional response, or perhaps as a sensation of being disengaged from the present. It's important to note that not every 'no' implies danger. In cases of unresolved trauma, our body might signal false alarms. Yet, these are still crucial in understanding our personal somatic language. Paying attention to these signals is more than self-awareness; it's a step towards empowerment. It allows us to remain grounded and in tune with our own autonomy.

Growing up is hard, especially when it means taking responsibility for our own survival strategies and patterns that have kept us from the things we want most (our needs being met) — like forgetting to communicate our needs. Also, becoming more realistic about the capacity of other humans without lowering the bar with what we deserve is a humbling, lifelong learning process. For example, I used to expect everyone to show up on time, and now I express how important time is for me and have also grown more flexible with time — while setting my boundary that canceling (not showing up) without communicating is not ok for me (unless of course, it's an emergency). Here are some foundational practices for humbly communicating your needs. Practice 1: 1. Get clear with how you're feeling. How much of that feeling is happening from this moment? And how much from the past? Is there an emotion underneath the loudest emotion in your awareness? 2. What do you need in response to your deepest emotion? 3. Express both of these and be open to what can be met in this moment. Notice how it feels to have some of your needs met or at least heard. If your feelings and needs can never be heard or met by someone, they are letting you know their capacity to receive. Practice 2: 1. Get clear about your needs regarding each of the following subjects, how you want to personally show up in relation to them, and how you would wish for others to show up. a. Trust b. Commitment c. Affection & Appreciation d. Empathy / Emotional Connection e. Respect and Admiration f. Intimacy g. Compromise h. Time. 2. Check in with the other person you are sharing this with and ask what and how they would meet these needs. Let me know how this practice went for you!

Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are often intertwined, sharing symptoms that hint at a common underlying cause. While fibromyalgia manifests primarily as widespread chronic pain, chronic fatigue syndrome brings about unexplained exhaustion and fatigue. Managing these overlapping conditions presents significant challenges. A multifaceted approach blending physical and mind-body techniques proves advantageous in addressing the complexities of these conditions. Utilizing physical methodologies such as myofascial release, craniosacral work, and visceral manipulation, we aim to alleviate the discomfort entrenched within the connective tissues. These techniques, adapted to individual tolerance levels, serve to release fascial restrictions, tender points, and trigger points, fostering enhanced hydration and mobility throughout the fascial network. In tandem with these physical interventions, we incorporate myofascial energetic release, acknowledging and engaging with the subtle energy aspects of the fascial system. By setting intentions to promote energetic flow and employing techniques such as visualization and breathwork, we seek to clear energetic blockages and restore vitality to the tissues. Furthermore, recognizing the impact of trauma and chronic stress on autonomic nervous system function, we prioritize autonomic nervous system re-regulation. Through gentle exercises and attentive observation of autonomic responses to stressors, we endeavor to recalibrate the nervous system's reactions, fostering a more balanced physiological and psychological state. This holistic approach aims to integrate responses to triggers, establishing a new baseline for nervous system function. Ready to Unlock the Power of Myofascial Energetic Release? You probably spend a lot of time thinking about the things you do that you don't feel great about... the ways you wish you were different... the behaviors you regret... the moments you lost your cool, etc. But how often do you spend thinking about the things you love about yourself? It's a lot less often, right? Take 5 minutes tonight and write for a bit about the things you like. Flip the script for a bit and see how you feel after :) To go deeper with this prompt: speak your love out loud to yourself while you stand in front of a mirror 💕

There are different ways to practice medicine. Different approaches and paths we can take, for different issues and goals. There's running blood tests, diagnosing an iron deficiency, identifying why there's a deficiency in the first place and remedying that. It is simple and clear-cut. Find the issue. Fix the issue. Ensure it doesn't happen again. This is standard medicine - focused on assessment, diagnosis & treatment. And as a GP, it is a big part of our work. When I use my skills in my role as a Vitality Coach, my approach is different. It is a journey. A deep dive. An adventure. It takes standard medicine into account, and then takes it further, wider and deeper. It looks at the big picture of your life - your experiences, your environment, your dreams - and maps a path that embraces all of those parts. So that you're not just solving an isolated medical issue, you're creating a vital, meaningful and totally 'you' future. If this sparks something in you, you can find out more on my website: drashleabroomfield.com.au Image description: Dr Ashlea, a blonde woman wearing a grey t-shirt and green printed shirt, is walking down a beach track towards the ocean. #GP #MindBodyTherapy #Medicine #Healing #CoffsHarbour #Sawtell #Woolgoolga #HolisticHealth #Doctor

This one might be a little harder to digest. When we get triggered, it floods our whole system, including our perception of the world. As humans, we’re evolutionarily designed to seek out the origin of our internal responses. In that state of seeking, it becomes easier to project onto whatever is around us, often neglecting our complex history as the origin of our response. This is not to say that people/events don't activate us; it's just that our response to them happens in combination with our history. Here's the math equation of that: stimulus + history = response. Let's break it down further. Any incoming sensory information, like smell, sound, etc., stimulates old memories, especially those similar to it. The same is true when we have an emotion or stress response; it activates the associative memory network – like turning the light bulb on every other time you've had that feeling. So let's say you see the color green or feel sad; it brings back all the times you've previously seen that color or felt that way to the present, and you experience the accumulation of all those memories at once. Suddenly you're basking in the light of the present and a lot of your past. And all of this is happening beneath your conscious awareness. A trigger is the present and the past compounding into this moment. And as to be expected, it stirs up your defense responses. All those memories, reactions, and defense responses saturate how we see, hear, smell, and feel the world in that moment – becoming our sense of truth. We then project and deposit our sense of truth onto other people/circumstances. And to prevent a dissonance of our truth, we do whatever is necessary to protect our current reality – despite any counterevidence. And so, our truth may not be the full truth of what is happening around us. It's essential to validate your truth, identify all the parts of what is constructing the current response, and stay present with what's happening within you. Creating space to be with what is happening in you often decreases the drive to project onto other people/situations – getting clearer on what's yours to work out and what truly needs to be addressed with others.

Title: Harnessing the Power of Acupuncture: A Mindful Therapeutic Approach Acupuncture, an age-old therapeutic technique, is making waves in the realm of cognitive-behavioral therapies and mindfulness practices. By integrating these three potent modalities, we can create a transformative approach to holistic wellness. Historically, acupuncture has been recognized for its ability to alleviate physical pain. However, it goes beyond that. The practice stimulates the body’s healing processes, bringing harmony to the energy flow within us. Recent studies indicate that acupuncture can play a pivotal role in managing mental health concerns too. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a popular treatment for a range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and insomnia. It involves changing detrimental thought patterns, thus influencing emotions and behaviors positively. Combining acupuncture with CBT could potentially enhance the therapeutic outcomes by addressing both the mind and the body. Simultaneously, mindfulness, the practice of being fully present and engaged in the current moment, is becoming increasingly popular in mental health treatment. It encourages acceptance of our thoughts and feelings without judgment, promoting mental tranquility. By integrating mindfulness with acupuncture, we can delve deeper into the relationship between our physical sensations and mental state, giving us a more profound understanding of our holistic well-being. In essence, the fusion of acupuncture, mindfulness, and cognitive-behavioral therapy offers a new perspective on mental health treatment. This integrated approach encourages us to consider our health as a perfect harmony of the mind, body, and spirit, opening up new avenues for wellness and recovery. As we evolve in our understanding of health, let's embrace these ancient and modern techniques, synergizing them for maximum wellness. Together, let's pave the way for a future where our approach to health is as diverse, comprehensive, and well-rounded as the individuals we are treating. #HolisticHealth #MindBodyTherapy #AcupunctureHealing

The body and the mind are not just interconnected; they are expressions of one another. Emotional conflicts, if unresolved, don’t merely linger in the mind but are often converted into physical symptoms, a process known as somatization. Fascia is sensitive to the body’s biochemical environment. Under stress, the body releases cortisol and other chemicals that tighten the fascia. This response can create „densifications“ which are areas of increased thickness and reduced elasticity. As fascia is present throughout all organs, this can severly compromise organ function and increase pain sensitivitv. Creating the perfect conditions for - chronic disease. Now, I’d love to hear from you: „Have you ever experienced a physical reaction during an emotional moment? How did your body feel, and what emotions were you processing?“ #PsychosomaticHealing #BodyMindConnection #TraumaInformedCare #somatictherapy #MindBodyTherapy

Have you read this one? "Between life and death there is a library, and within that library, the shelves go on forever. Every book provides a chance to try another life you could have lived. To see how things would be if you had made other choices . . . Would you have done anything different, if you had the chance to undo your regrets? A novel about all the choices that go into a life well lived. Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place."

Title: "Harnessing Mind-Body Therapies to Balance Hormonal Imbalances" The human body is an intricate system, a delicate symphony of complex interactions. Within this symphony, hormones play a pivotal role, affecting every aspect of our wellbeing. When this harmony is disrupted, hormonal imbalances can lead to a plethora of health issues. In a world where reliance on synthetic medication is prevalent, mind-body therapies offer a natural, holistic approach to restore balance. These therapies, including meditation, yoga, and biofeedback, have been shown to influence the body's hormonal balance, fostering wellness. The principle behind mind-body therapies is simple: our thoughts and feelings can directly affect our physical health. Stress, for instance, can trigger the release of cortisol, a hormone that, in excess, can lead to health issues such as weight gain and sleep disorders. By mastering stress through meditation or yoga, we can regulate cortisol levels, thus mitigating such issues. Moreover, biofeedback, a technique that trains individuals to control physiological processes, can be used to alleviate symptoms of hormonal imbalances. For instance, a common symptom of hormonal imbalance in women is hot flashes. Biofeedback can help manage this symptom by teaching individuals to control their body temperature. The integration of mind-body therapies into our wellness regime is a step towards holistic health. By acknowledging the power of the mind and harnessing it, we can influence our body’s hormonal balance. This not only alleviates the symptoms of hormonal imbalances but also promotes overall wellness. While there is no 'one-size-fits-all' approach to health, the exploration of mind-body therapies in managing hormonal imbalances is a testament to the potential of holistic healing. If you’ve been here for a while, you’ll know I have a special interest in issues relating to food, physical intimacy and bodies. And on the surface, these might not look connected. That’s certainly how they’ve been managed and treated traditionally. And as a GP, Sexologist and Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician (CEDC-MH), I’ve spent a lot of time considering the bigger picture of these issues – and the threads that tie them together. It’s no coincidence that many people with eating disorders have difficulties with physical intimacy. OR, that when eating disorder symptoms improve, often their intimacy issues tend to improve too. There appears to be a link between problems in physical intimacy and how comfortable someone is with/in their body. It also tells us that if we can focus on improving feelings of safety and comfort within the body, it might help both eating disorders and physical intimacy problems. Whilst there is not a lot of research consensus on concurrent treatment for these dual issues yet, our relationship with food, intimacy and our bodies is a vital part of life, and recognising how these aspects work together is important when it comes to supporting a holistic recovery. No editing, no worrying about what people will think, no holding back because it's not logical, etc. The invitation here is to give yourself this cozy, safe bubble of time where you're allowed to just be honest about what you really want. As a Credentialed Eating Disorder Clinician (CEDC-MH) I hear a lot of stories. Stories from people severely restricting their intake and losing weight through starvation – then being praised for looking ‘better’ or more ‘healthy’ than they did when they were actually healthy. This is because, as a society, our perception of health is totally warped. What we see as a 'healthy body' is skewed. It’s been overtaken by the beauty, fitness, wellness and entertainment industries. People whose lives are dedicated to projecting an image of body ‘perfection’, who spend each day with a team of staff to help them protect and maintain that image. And there are people who make money off of the distress and unhappiness this creates within us; selling us products or programs to change how we look under the guise of 'health.' But the thing is, we aren’t meant to be ‘perfect’ – our imperfection is what defines us. We remember people because of the ways they are different. When we see somebody's ‘soul’ or their authentic self, often that can be sooo attractive. Magnetising. What we’re drawn to – no matter what shaped or sized body it comes with. This is part of this May's Monthly Musings email, where I explore ideas relating to food, intimacy and bodies. If you'd like a copy, comment '😀' below. Image description: Dr Ashlea is lying on her stomach writing in a notebook. Text over the image reads "we are not meant to be perfect". #GP #MindBodyTherapy #Medicine #Healing #CoffsHarbour #Sawtell #Woolgoolga #HolisticHealth #Doctor #Imperfection #PerfectlyImperfect #Mindset

From psychotherapist Katherine Morgan Schafler, an invitation to every “recovering perfectionist” to challenge the way they look at perfectionism, and the way they look at themselves. We’ve been looking at perfectionism all wrong. As psychotherapist and former on-site therapist at Google Katherine Morgan Schafler argues in The Perfectionist’s Guide to Losing Control, you don’t have to stop being a perfectionist to be healthy. For women who are sick of being given the generic advice to “find balance,” a new approach has arrived. Which of the five types of perfectionist are you? Classic, intense, Parisian, messy, or procrastinator? As you identify your unique perfectionist profile, you’ll learn how to manage each form of perfectionism to work for you, not against you. Beyond managing it, you’ll learn how to embrace and even enjoy your perfectionism. Yes, enjoy! Full of stories and brimming with humor, empathy, and depth, this book is a love letter to the ambitious, high achieving, full-of-life clients who filled the author’s private practice, and who changed her life. It’s a clarion call for all women to dare to want more without feeling greedy or ungrateful. Ultimately, this book will show you how to make the single greatest trade you’ll ever make in your life, which is to exchange superficial control for real power. Trauma and chronic stress change you profoundly. Your adaptations, no matter how unhelpful, always have the intention of helping you survive. There is always story behind where you struggle, resist, and war with... and you've come by that honestly. In health, and in life, there’s a lot of talk about movement. Which is fair enough, since, as a society, we spend more time sitting down. So why does movement sometimes feel like punishment? In part, it is due to the way it’s been sold to us – that it’s got to hurt for it to work, that it has to look at certain way or meet a certain goal - tracking and comparing how many steps you can do or how fast you can walk up a hill. It doesn't need to be, nor 'should' it be, like that. There are ways to move that can bring us joy, challenge our body, revitalise our mind and connect us to the natural world. Whilst doing it in a way that supports our health and wellbeing - meeting the recommended guidelines for physical activity. Without punishing yourself. And when we find ours, it’s so much easier and more natural for it to become part of our lives long-term. That’s what I discuss with my patients when it comes to physical activity – finding something that helps them move more, and gives them a sense of joy, vitality and pleasure. It’s probably no surprise that for me, that's surfing & hiking. What’s your movement of choice? I’d love to know. Image description: A photo of a surfboard on the beach. What is your default setting during times of stress? Do you default to fear or do you frame the problem that you are facing through the lens of God’s love? As I walk with individuals through the process of emotional realignment in their pursuit of health, we often have to release certain negative emotions that have been stored energetically in the kidneys. Some of these emotions are: fear, dread, performance, judgment, shame, false burden, and unworthiness. Now you may be asking, like I did, “Why are all of these negative emotions resonating so strongly at the kidney organs of the body?” This question took me into a deep lesson with God that I am still learning. One of the times I feel most vital is when I’m speaking to an audience about, and creating space for, tough topics. These can be things like self-care, eating disorders, problems with physical intimacy, chronic pain, stress, burnout and trauma – the topics that might feel easier to sweep under the rug, but are oh so important to bring into the light. I'm an advocate for deep connection and care for all parts of yourself – the physical, mental, sensual and spiritual – and sharing and facilitating this with a group setting lights me up. If you work with people who would benefit from this message – those trying to do it all, all the time – I’d love to chat. I’m available as a speaker, facilitator and educator for conferences, workshops and more.
