My Father's Garden by Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar can be considered documentation of human life, without an overarching agenda. This book talks about gay, Adivasi men, a community that can be politicised to no end. However, this documentation is devoid of any such histrionics and is simply a narration of life. An adult, functioning human being, optimally or not, we'll leave it up to you to decide. And even in this most matter of fact narration, the author manages to touch hearts, because he hints at the most primitive feelings of love, lust, hurt, betrayal, perfectly balancing his protagonist amidst the larger sociopolitical chaos. As The Hindu rightly states, the author does not set out to glorify or chant the praise of the status quo. It is but an honest and sometimes agonised look at an exploitative world. And therefore, it is not surprising that the book is relatable now more than ever because aren't most of us glancing at the modern Indian apathy from time to time while we continue to go about our business?
