I've always been fascinated by three characters in the story of Mahabharata - Karna, Arjun, and Draupadi. I've longed to understand the charecters inner worlds, their thought processes, and their emotional landscapes. Because I always felt these were 3 characters whose life lessons I could learn the most from. The traditional telling of the Mahabharata, however, I always felt lacked in emotional depth. To me it was more like a narration of events than a story that truly delves into the characters' inner workings. But @divakarunichitra book, The Palace of Illusions, has filled this gap for me by weaving a narrative from Draupadi's perspective, imagining Draupadi's thoughts and emotions in a way that resonates with modern women. I thoroughly enjoyed the audio version of the book! I must warn you that if you do get into the book, expect to be fully absorbed I found myself nodding in agreement with some of Draupadi's imagined judgments and opinions about the characters around her, echoing my own thoughts when I watched the Mahabharata on tv/heard bits of the stories from my mom years ago.. In other parts of 'Palace of Illusion', I was struck by how Chitra's imagination revealed new possibilities for Draupadi's thoughts and feelings, ones no one else could have ever possibly considered before, and it all felt so apt! Chitra's narration of how Draupadi might have processed the injustices in her life is so relatable that it brought me to tears on two occasions - when she sacrificed/ gave up on Karna at her swayamwar (and how this haunted her all through) and when she was shamed in front of a court full of loved ones who she had hoped would protect her. My favorite line in the book, 'I called on pride to freeze my tears to stone,' is such a perfect description of how we can imagine the character Draupadi must have processed her external appearance as shame wrapped her. I was so deeply absorbed in Draupadi's world the last 2 days that after listening to the book, I felt inspired to write a little poem about Draupadi reflecting on her life, through my lens (influenced in part by Chitra) right after. Thank you, @divakarunichitra , for this wonderful book!
