Here’s my takeaway from the books: 👉We add technology for convenience, but little do we realise that we are inevitably dependent on it. 👉Powerful corporations through products and services aim to predict and control human behaviour while capitalising on it. 👉Tech giants like Meta and Google track your scrolling pattern and the content you consume. Hence, delivering content that takes you on a scrolling spree to get you addicted. 👉We are constantly monitored yet without feeling a threat. Pegasus: How a Spy in Your Pocket Threatens the End of Privacy, Dignity, and Democracy by Laurent Richard and Sandrine Rigaud On the 18th of July 2021, 17 media organisations began to publish a series of stories as a part of an investigative journalism project called the ‘Pegasus Project.’ This project uncovered how political leaders and other wealthy individuals were purchasing Pegasus spyware from the Israeli surveillance tech company NSO Group to spy on citizens, journalists, human/civil rights lawyers, activists, and rival politicians, including heads of state. The spyware can be used to infiltrate people’s phones and could scrape the phone for its data and even turn on the camera. Ostensibly it was intended to track criminals or prevent terrorist attacks, but whoever buys the spyware can use it for however they see fit, and NSO Groups is more than happy to sell it to autocrats and oppressive governments. This book is a behind the scenes look at how these journalists came to uncover the widespread misuse of this technology and how dangerous it can be. This book is in the same vein as Ronan Farrow’s Catch and Kill or the movie Spotlight, so while you do learn about what they’re reporting on, what you’re really reading is a story about the journalistic process. So if you want to learn about Pegasus, you should go read the original reporting - search on Google ‘the Pegasus Project’ (The Guardian doesn’t have a paywall). But if you like this kind of story, then you’re sure to love this one! It was very thrilling, and the journalists had to be very digitally clandestine in case they became a target, especially so as not to compromise their sources. NSO Group sells to people all over the world, so we get a glimpse into what it’s like for journalists and activists in different parts of the world who are speaking out against their governments. We are being manipulated by surveillance capitalism, we are being stressed out by the market economy, our environment is full of contaminants impacting us in unknown ways - what can we do about it? 💭💭💭 Hmm, how do I feel about this one? I’m in two minds. This book is accessibly written and easy to read, and I agree with its premise. Confirmation bias wants me to join the raving. And I did have high hopes when at the start he clearly sets out his journalistic intent, and how he plans to handle the information - but throughout I got the sense of quite a bit of sensationalism in the data he was presenting / lack of context. Afterwards I found some detailed criticism of his use of sources, which is worth noting. The criticism of his section on ADHD seems to be what got attention on goodreads - that’s actually not problematic, but he did leave himself open to it via sloppy writing. Overall, if you feel knowledgable about the issue don’t bother, if you’d like to learn more then do read it… Just make sure you dial the panic down a few notches, as the evidence is there for serious concern, it’s just not there for how extremely concerned this might leave you feeling. And how hopeless. I know he says this is not a self help book but it could easily have a short final section listing some actions to try and take - even small ones. I get the sense he wants people to panic vs empowered, as he believes we are doomed without huge structural change. He might be right but I’m not sure it’s helpful. After some conversations with fellow parents about the ‘smartphone free childhood’ movement happening in the UK at the moment, I’ve realised there really are a lot of folk who don’t understand how attention is a commodity and a sacrificial lamb under capitalism - but for the same reasons outlined in his book, might actually take the contents here and lean hard into conspiracy 😬 So yes. Mixed feelings.
