As most of you probably know, back in October I started a YouTube channel (Beer and Vinyl) dedicated to talking about music, showing records, and drinking the occasional adult beverage. Although I knew it would be fun, I had no idea it would be this rewarding. I’ve recently had the chance to sit down with a number of people in the industry who I have the utmost admiration and respect for. The Ironsides - Changing Light (2023) What an incredible debut album! This was one of my favorite releases this past year and I highly recommend giving it a listen. It’s fresh, dreamy, soulful and puts me in such a good mood. “Inspired by the soundtracks and library music of European composers during the 60’s and 70’s, the Ironsides set out to create a collection of lush songs that evoke a diverse range of feelings, emotions, and memories.” I couldn’t agree more with this statement pulled from their bandcamp. Such a cinematic soundtrack vibe with this one. I have often pictured how certain songs would play out in random films. Today I am substituting a 4th grade class and playing this for the class while they work. It warms my heart to see 9 and 10 year olds tapping their feet to the music.

The review of our favorite music of 2023 continues.... #15 The Ironsides - Changing Light On “Changing Light”, the Ironsides have created the perfect cross between early library recordings and the film scores of every late 60’s/early 70’s movie you’ve never seen. Shuffling rhythms, twangy guitar and string arrangements that redefine the term “swirling” are all here and in abundance. This is the perfect soundtrack to your morning, your late night and any moment in between when you feel the need to take a deep breath and dream of a better place. As a young person, listening to a film score was equally as important as following the storyline - soundtracks made up a huge portion of my record collection. This album is full of moments that bring me back to those times in a very familiar yet fresh and exciting way. “A Return From Ashes” conjures up the greatest airport breakup scenes on film while the title track made me think of how a pile of dried leaves in Autumn has so many more possibilities when you’re first in love. “Violet Vanished” would be completely at home in any Italian spy thriller while the album’s closer “West Wind” makes me envision the closing credits of the movie with the happiest ending ever. I think you get the idea. If you are someone that is familiar with that era, I dare you to get through this listen without a very personal memory list of your own. This is instrumental music at it’s most elegant, dramatic and sentimental in the very best way. Highlights are the lightly funky “The Web”, the gorgeous “Shades Of Silver” and “Ligurian Dream”, the album's standout piece that lands firmly in the middle of “A Summer Place” and “Twin Peaks”. Beautiful music that reacquaints you with your own imagination. That is about as successful as any album could ever be. Best albums of 2023, no. 3: The Ironsides - Changing Light Anything that comes out on Colemine Records is worth picking up, but I wasn’t prepared for how good The Ironsides’ debut LP is. Instrumental psych soul backed by funky drums and excellent arrangements, with orchestral flourishes that give it a cinematic feel. #BestAlbumsof2023 #BestAlbums2023 2023 has not only been, in my opinion, the best year for music of this decade, thus far, it is also arguably the best year for music of the past 20 years. * @meglingbaird ~ Furling "Ashes, Ashes" is a ghostly, haunting opener, "Star Hill Song" & "Saddest Verses" are heartbreaking, "Will You Follow Me Home" is hypnotic, maybe the most mesmerizing songs of her career. * @maryoverthere ~ Goodbye Hotel Arkada "Music For Applying Shimmering Eye Shadow" and closer "Yesterday's Parties" are gorgeous, perhaps the most magical music of her career. * @rosecityband ~ Garden Party @ripleyjohnson on guitar and @barryalanwalker on pedal steel create two of the band's best tracks, the aching, reflective "Garden Song" & "Saturday's Gone". * @mnau ~ Accompany Michael Nau's most memorable solo album (alongside Some Twist & Load EP), "Shiftshaping", "One Morning in Vibrato", and "Accompaniment" are lonely, melancholy, misty soundtracks.
