Values ... To be honest given my age for a long time values was only ever discussed in a corporate environment. I attended countless workshops and could have played buzzword bingo the moment integrity and team work were mentioned! It however never changed terrible leadership! Family is one of my most important values. Recently my aunt and uncle visited from Bahrain, when we lived in Dubai they were constants in our lives. Having them in New Zealand was a truly wonderful time and whilst there were big fat ugly tears when they left I had so much to be thankful for. There was so much joy because I made time for it, I was grateful for everything we did and most importantly I was present in the moment and felt grounded and the unconditional love that is always there when I am with my family. When you live a long way away from family you can feel isolated and depleted of that unconditional love and support so when it's present you need to plug in and charge yourself up!!! Have you worked out your own personal values and what is important to you? It's something we don't always make time for when we are busy being busy. It is however a fundamental step in self awareness. It's a really fun exercise I do with clients and in workshops as it enables you to move positively forward in alignment with your goals and dreams. If you are feeling a bit lost and detached from what is important and believe coaching may help you move forward, please dm me and you can book a session or go to the link in my bio and fill out the contact request #expatcoach #expatmum #livingabroad #reversecultureshock #livingabroadproblems #movinghome #movingabroad #thirdculturekids #expatparent #expatlifedubai

Well this is super relevant to all of us. Parents always ask me “How come your child tells you all this stuff about their day, their feelings, their thoughts?” Mostly it’s down to our emotional connection and the secure attachment that he enjoys with me. BUT it’s also down to how I ask him questions. I offer invitations. I don’t cross examine or ask loads of questions. I simply invite him to share. If you’re struggling to get your child to share with you, work on that secure attachment and check the language you use when you want them to share with you. #funlovingparenting #funandlove #parentingwithlove #parentingtips #parenting #gentleparenting #consciousparenting #parentingtools #parentthechildinfrontofyou #thirdculturekids #traditionalparenting #overseasfamilies #breakinggenerationalcycles #multicultural #multiculturalfamilies #family #familylove #happyfamily

It’s time to introduce Emma!! Emma started at MTI in 2023 after graduating from Moody Bible Institute. As a child, her family served as missionaries in a Jamaican deaf village. Since starting at MTI, Emma has enjoyed learning more about what it means to support and equip the whole family in preparation for their life overseas. She mainly works with kids ages 4-6 in our training programs. During her free time, Emma enjoys water coloring, hiking, and baking! 🥐 #missions #missionarykids #thirdculturekids #tcklife #mtichipsworld #missiontraininginternational

Raising Third Culture Kids Part 2 of 2 By: Amanda Mauro, MA There can be some draw backs, one of which TCKs can struggle with questions of identity and belonging, feeling that they don’t fully fit into their parents' culture or the cultures they have lived in. This can lead to a sense of rootlessness and confusion about where they truly belong, impacting their self-esteem and social relationships. One way to help support your child in overcoming struggles they may experience due to being a TCK could be to teach them about your home culture. Exposing them to your roots and the cultural contexts you've been part of can provide a stronger sense of identity and continuity. This can also help to create a personal narrative that your child can use to integrate their various cultural experiences. Another way to provide support is to put them in situations where they can meet other TCK’s. This can be through sports groups, schools, and other organizations. This helps to create a sense of community; sharing experiences with others who have similar backgrounds can provide a sense of understanding and belonging (not only for the kids but also for the parents). Lastly, if you feel like additional support could be beneficial, consider seeking counseling with a professional who has knowledge in cross-cultural issues. They can provide guidance and strategies to navigate identity confusion and feelings of disconnection. Raising Third Culture Kids Part 1 of 2 By: Amanda Mauro, MA The concept of "third culture" identity, often associated with "Third Culture Kids" (TCKs), refers to individuals who have spent a significant portion of their developmental years outside their parents' culture(s). This upbringing in multiple cultural environments leads to the formation of a unique identity that incorporates elements of their parents' culture (first culture), the host culture(s) they live in (second culture), and a blend of these influences into a "third culture." TCKs often develop advanced cultural adaptability and open-mindedness but may also face challenges with identity confusion and a sense of belonging. TCKs often develop a high level of cultural awareness and adaptability. Growing up in diverse cultural environments allows them to understand and appreciate different perspectives, making them more open-minded and accepting of others. Additionally, many TCKs become fluent in multiple languages due to their exposure to different linguistic environments. This linguistic proficiency not only enhances their cognitive abilities but also opens up opportunities for communication and connection with a broader range of people, both personally and professionally. Today a photographic proof sheet has become an artifact from an earlier technical age but for those of us who learned photography in the darkroom—seeing a proof sheet is like remembering a familiar puzzle. I recognize some of the people in these photographs but not the locations. These photographs are now just evidence of the mostly unknown—I don’t know when or where they were taken or who took them. The weird compositions and ghostly overexposures creates a sense of drama and a feeling of mystery. It is like being on a holiday and you don’t have a clue of where you are, how to behave or what happens next. #Expat, #Expats, #Expatlife, #Expatliving, #Expatlifestyle, #Livingabroad, #Digitalnomads, #Relocation, #Expatliving, #FIGT, #FIGTCommunity, #FamiliesinGlobalTransition, #GlobalMobility, #GloballyMobilie, #Relocation, #LifeAbroad, #LivingAbroad, #Expatlife, #TCKs, #TCKStories, #ThirdCultureKids, #GlobalFamilies, #Authors, @figt_anza, #Globalmobilitybooks, #Expatauthors, #Expatbooks, #Bookclub, #Australianexpats, #Crossingculture, #andthenwemovedto, @carolinaporto_mambembe @amulticulturallife @kirstenpontius @louiserosswriter2w, #photography

拆解「麻」與「煩」 Uncovering the fascinating origins behind everyday Chinese words like "trouble" can make language learning fun and engaging for multilingual families! Of course, even though "trouble" is an EVERYDAY word, we hope our children don't get us into too much trouble EVERY DAY! 😄 Another fun fact - the characters for "trouble" (麻煩 má fán / maa4 faan4) have exactly the same two syllables in both Mandarin and Cantonese. In Mandarin, both má and fán are in the 2nd tone, while in Cantonese, maa4 and faan4 are in the 4th tone! . . . . . .

It’s not bragging if it’s true. 🤷 One of the most memorable things about the various places that I’ve lived is the wildlife of Kenya. Going to the game parks in the school holidays and seeing all kinds of animals including the big five was part of everyday life. Telling people about this has sometimes received unwelcome comments along the lines of bragging or seeking one-upmanship. It can be exhausting. Have you experienced the bragging line?

This is for the culturally diverse, the third culture kids, and anyone without a fixed home. 🚣‍♀️ They call us bridges. But isn’t that just another way of saying we’re floaters and drifters? 🌉 Being a bridge has its perks. Still — sometimes you wish to be solid land.  ••••• I took this photo years back in my shoebox apartment. I want to share it again for AAPI heritage month.  ••••• When you have so many cultures living inside you, it’s hard to know how much space to assign each of them. Which one leads? Who’s in the backseat? What percentage is what? 🪑 Honestly — it depends. The culturally ambiguous often code switch. So, our identities take turns, and sometimes fight over the driver’s seat.🚗 📍Tell me about the different cultures/identities living inside you. Let’s start a thread in the comments.🧵

What does your school do? According to an article by the NAIS by Angela Yang-Handy TCKs are often overlooked, misidentified, and misunderstood by school personnel as well as by their peers, as the relocation and cross-cultural experiences that have shaped their development are often invisible. By understanding their experiences and needs, schools can offer better support and programming. We connected on LinkedIn and she told me that in her research she didn't find a lot of schools had formalized plans so she wrote the article with clear steps of what schools can do. Here are a couple of her ideas: 1. It begins with your admissions plan. One example is about how students transferring back to the U.S. after growing up abroad are shuffled between domestic and international departments for university admissions. It can also just look like respecting the multi-faceted life of a kid in transition, and making sure admin is sensitive to the unknown circumstances. For example, knowing the address where they will live when they arrive in country. 2. Consider their orientation might look different. Can their 'new buddy' be someone who also moves a lot? Can the orientation help connect families on the move AND other parents in the grade? 3. Students should have immediate access to counselors instead of waiting to see how they adjust. Normalize the process in case it isn't familiar to them. 4. Don't assume what they know, or have lived, by their passport. There may be gaps transferring from one education system to another, so make sure to know the child and what they have already learned. 5. Make sure the employees understand, and are trained, in working with this special demographic. Make sure no one is asking 'but where are you really from?' A lot of the literature about transitions is meant for students moving back to their passport country after graduating high school, but surely there are things international schools can do to ease the transition while they are in primary, or secondary school. The author suggests schools should have a formalized transition plan. This might already be things that are done, so write them down and formalize that plan!

The older I get the fragility of life hits closer and closer to home. One minute you’re 17 on your way to school with your dad and your life comes to an end as a result of someone else’s road rage who failed to stop at the red light but plowed right into 6 cars. Your brother in law thinks he has a common cold and then the cough never goes away and he ends up getting a cancer diagnosis. Life can change in the blink of an eye. Hope takes effort and it requires practice. I place my hope on the rock when everything around feels like sinking sand. TODAY IS THE EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION DEADLINE for Proskuneo’s Third Culture Retreat (July 31-August 4, 2024). Save $25 if you register today. (Link in profile.) [Below is a testimony from one of last year’s Third Culture Retreat participants] “I learned to value, and be valued. I felt safe. I was in a space for me to be fully myself and I could feel that. I found healing in places I didn’t know existed. I had underestimated the power of hearing others’ experiences that reflected my own. There’s no manual for how a third-culture kid should live, and maybe that tension exists for a long time. But it’s ok to not be ok sometimes. And maybe the life of a third-culture kid is not just trying to resolve that tension but to go through it supporting others together.” #thirdculturekid #thirdculturekids #thirdculture

I have 19 ‘hometowns’!!! 😊 Third culture kids (TCK) are people who were raised in a culture other than their parents’ or the culture of their country of nationality, and also live in a different environment during a significant part of their child development years. They typically are exposed to a greater volume and variety of cultural influences than those who grow up in one particular cultural setting. #tck #thirdculturekids #travel #wanderer #wayfarer #explorer #citizenoftheworld #thailand #laos #zambia #australia #sweden #colorado #california #arizona

Are you an international student? Have you grown up abroad and then moved back to your “home country”? Have you moved from one place to another within your passport country? Are you an immigrant, or a TCK working in a country you didn’t grow up in? Then you belong to the big group of CCKs, Cross Culture Kids. These are kids who have spent a significant part of their developmental years (0 - 18) regularly interacting with two or more cultures. Cross Cultural Kids (CCKs) is the umbrella term and it includes the following groups of children: Traditional TCKs Domestic TCKs International Adoptees Children of Immigrants Children of Minorities Children of Refugees Educational CCKs Parachute Kids Children of Borderlanders Bi-/Mulitcultural Children Bi-/Multiracial Children Bi-/Multiheritage Children We’ve talked to many CCKs who wished they had a space to talk about CCK challenges. A space where you don’t feel like the odd one out, but one where everyone “gets you”. So, we’re offering a monthly meet-up for CCKs, TCKs, and international students etc. between the ages of 18 and 25 to meet online with Megan and myself. We’d love to have you with us!!! Bring your international and globally mobile friends along...😎 Please comment “register,” and I’ll send you the link. 🌺 Kindly, Andrea P.S.: (For security reasons, you are required to turn on your camera.) #tcks #tcklife #thirdculturekid #thirdculturekids #expatkids #tckuniversity #tckuniverse #internationalstudents #nomadstudents

Hei! Nihao! #liljamuuttaamaailmalle #lottasofiasaahko @lottasaahko #miramallius @miramallius #hillahautajoki #tammikirjat @tammikirjat #thirdculturekids #matkalaukkulapset

“Roots in Transit” explores the histories and personal narratives of individuals who identify as Third Culture Kids (TCKs). This book is a compilation of interviews, stories, and experiences shared by a diverse range of individuals, each offering unique insights into the TCK lifestyle. The inspiration behind “Roots in Transit” stems from a deeply personal connection to the TCK experience. As the creator of this project, I myself grew up as a Third Culture Kid, born in Bergamo, Italy, to Dutch parents. Throughout my upbringing, my family travelled continents, living in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, followed by seven transformative years in Nanjing and Shanghai, China, and subsequently settling in Switzerland, where we resided in Schaffhausen for four years and Zurich for three years. Currently, I find myself in London, pursuing my final year as a Graphic Communication Design student at Central Saint Martins. The decision to create this book was motivated by a desire to amplify the voices and stories of TCKs, drawing from my own experiences and those of others who have navigated the complexities of cultural identity and global mobility. I am deeply grateful to all the individuals who generously shared their stories and experiences, as well as the carefully curated images that accompany them. Their willingness to open up and share their journeys has enriched this project immeasurably, and I extend my sincerest gratitude to each and every one of them. This book is a testament to the resilience, diversity, and richness of the TCK experience, and it is my hope that it will serve as a source of inspiration and connection for TCKs and global citizens alike. - #publication #publicationdesign #adobeindesign #photography #family #thirdculturekids #interviews #bookdesign #editorialdesign #graphicdesign #designer #print #perfectbinding

Monday Mindset is IN THE HOOOOOOUSSSEEEE!!! OK. Here we go. This is all about what my beautiful coach calls “attunement over attainment”. That means - when your child is having big feelings and you respond. Are you trying to calm them down, get them over it fast, direct their feelings and emotions. I mean… is there a goal that you are trying to ACHIEVE through your actions and words? OR Are you listening. Seeking to understand. Looking to connect. Wanting to just help them have their feelings heard and listened to. Are you working to ATTUNE to their needs. To tune into what they want and need? #funlovingparenting #funandlove #parentingwithlove #parentingtips #parenting #gentleparenting #consciousparenting #parentingtools #parentthechildinfrontofyou #thirdculturekids #traditionalparenting #overseasfamilies #breakinggenerationalcycles #multicultural #multiculturalfamilies #family #familylove #happyfamily

🦁 Monday Morning Reflections Being part of a globally mobile family and raising three third-culture-kids* I tend to reflect on fitting in vs. belonging on a frequent basis. And almost every single time I go back to Brené Brown’s quote. 👇 Knowing the difference between "Fitting In vs. Belonging" is simply important. For me, for them, for us. We as parents decided at some point to be a globally mobile family. So, it’s our responsibility to manage, support and guide ourselves and our children through each transition. As best as we can. Let me give you an example: When teachers tell me after a couple of weeks at a new school that our children just blend in as if they had always been part of the crowd, I sometimes hear very different stories at home. Yes, they like the new school. And they make it all work by adapting their behavior to what is expected. But they still miss their former school community. And their friends. They don’t belong 100% (yet). Why is Belonging so important? Let me answer this briefly with another quote from Brené: “One of the most important things about being a human being is feeling like you belong. If you get signals from your parents or your classmates that you don’t belong... it can really have a profound impact on your mental and physical health." 💡 And exactly the same applies to any other workplace as well. 💌 I invite you to take this thought with you. And see what comes up for you. Warmly, Viviane hashtag #transitions hashtag #thirdculturekids hashtag #selfleadership hashtag #lifelonglearning hashtag #belonging hashtag #coaching *A third-culture-kid (TCK) is a person who has spent a significant part of his/her/their developmental years outside the parents’ culture (s). – David C. CCKs are „cross-cultural kids.“ These are kids who have spent a significant part of their developmental years (0 - 18) regularly interacting with two or more cultures. If you look at the second slide of this post, you’ll find a visual that includes all cross-cultural-kids. We’ve talked to many CCKs who wished they had a space to talk about CCK challenges. A space where you don’t feel like the odd one out, but one where everyone “gets you”. So, we’re offering a monthly mett-up for CCKs, TCKs, and international students between the ages of 18 and 25 to meet online with Megan and me. Everyone who fits into one or more bubbles of the CCK Model on slide 2 is welcome. (Btw, for security reasons, you are required to turn on your camera.) We’d love to have you with us!!! Please „drag“ your friends along...😎 Please comment „register,“ and I’ll send you the link. 🌺 Kindly, Andrea #tcks #thirdculturekids #thirdculturekid #crossculturekids #crossculturekid #expatkids #expatteens #exatlife #livingabroadlife #internationalkids #transitions #tcktransition

I often refer to Sydney as one of my homes. As a TCK, I have several places that I have considered home throughout my lifetime and many still hold a special place in my heart. As wonderful as it may be to have moved around and have many homes, it can often come with a fundamental loss, and that is the loss of a sense of personal and cultural identity. Does that resonate?

Just sitting in a park with good coffee, and feeling ridiculously grateful for the abundance of the world. A moment of stillness to whisper my thanks, for the trip I was on, the time I could take to adventure, the quality of the coffee (!) and the kindness that put the effort into that little foam heart. I've put a lot of work into embracing the local in the couple of decades, but in this small return to the global I felt some pieces of me breathe easier. #thirdculturekid #tck #thirdculturekids #expatlife #thirdculture #travel #expat #expatfamily #culture #tcklife #globalcitizen #crosscultural #overseas #multicultural #diversity #tcks #globalnomad #international #crossculturalkid #expatkids #travel #travelling #coffeeart #coffeetime

When we lived in Okinawa, celebrating Children's Day became a family tradition - along with taco rice Tuesdays and taking our shoes off at the door. Moving back to the US, we kept those traditions alive. But our Northern Virginia neighbors aren't always aware of why we do these things, or the incredibly delicious experience of Kewpie mayo on literally all the things. So, we make it a point to share! There's just something about new art supplies 😍. It makes the artistic process more exciting, more special somehow. I was chatting with a fellow art therapist last week about the difference between virtual and in person creative therapies, and we both agreed that the artistic process changes when clients move from being able to come into your studio and use "new to them" art materials to having to use their own materials that they have at home which may not feel as exciting. While I love the accessibility of virtual therapy and encouraging clients to use whatever they have on hand, I do miss the curiosity and excitement that is naturally facilitated with an in person art therapy studio filled with materials. I'm currently pondering ways to increase accessibility of art supplies for my clients, or to use other means of inspiring curiosity and excitement when art materials are limited. These are just some of the things you've got to think about when running a practice like this! . #therapy #virtualtherapy #arttherapy #expressiveartstherapy #tck #tcktherapy #thirdculturekids #art #artsupplies

Many of my clients come to me saying that they don’t know who they are and that they feel lost. Sometimes, they’ll be able to articulate that they feel like they can’t fit in with a specific cultural group. But they’re at a loss as to how to begin to resolve their identity issues. My answer is always to start with looking at what’s showing up in their daily life. What is giving them stress and anxiety? For example, they may say that they’re anxious about starting a new project at work. You may think, what does this have to do with being a TCK and having identity issues? When we break down what the anxiety is about, we end up finding out that it’s about their fear about not being prepared and knowledgeable, about not wanting to make a mistake or fail, or wanting to be approved. This ends up leading to a past scenario when they were in a new country feeling completely unprepared, not having the same knowledge as others, and not being approved by their peers or even their own family. The client realizes that their self-doubt and need for approval led them to lose their sense of self, repeatedly, and over decades. The focus of our work is to work through the emotional impact of the key scenarios that led them there. This is how a client finds their way back to their identity. One single challenge in your daily life is all that’s needed to start uncovering your identity. . . . . #tck #thirdculturekid #thirdculturekids #tckidentity #tckbelonging #thirdculturekidproblems #efttapping #identityissues #tcklife #tckproblems #tcks #atck #bicultural #belonging #mindfulness #emotionalfreedomtechniques #efttapping #energyhealing #alternativehealing #personalgrowth #spiritualgrowth #empowerment #mindfulness #stress #anxiety #emotions #maine #hsp

Yesterday my eldest son Samuel turned 16. Given I have had so long to work out this parenting gig I thought I'd be ready to impart a whole load of wisdom and advice for those living a transient life but out of everything I've learnt and advice I've been given the one story that I've shared the most is one that I had 16 years ago! I really struggled with breastfeeding and at the time as someone who liked to 'achieve' and even 'over achieve' in many areas of life I embarked on trying to get an A* in breastfeeding. I had some crazy routine between expressing, breast feeding and formula top ups that left me broken physically and emotionally to only then be told by the paediatrician that Samuel was not thriving. Living in Dubai for less than a year with no family and little support my emotions and hormones were all over the place. I remember crying my eyes out to Vicki my midwife feeling like I'd failed at the first hurdle of motherhood unable to breastfeed my baby! Vicki a straight shooting Aussie looked me in the eye and said Paula, when Samuel is 18 filling out his application form for university no one is going to ask him if he was exclusively breastfed or not! With that I changed course and did what was best for me and Samuel at the time! A tactic I continue to use! I'm not a parenting expert but I grew up on the road as a military 'BRAT' and have two children who've lived an expat life, born in Dubai to parents from opposites ends of the world. That little equation has brought enough of a challenge and a lot of learning which helps me as a coach to hold space for clients. If you are feeling like you need support to help you navigate parenting you can work with me in a 1:1 session. As I was going through and organizing our thousands of family photos, I came across this pic: Taken about 7 years ago, when my first two sons were tiny bundles of joy, and we were temporarily living in my hometown Vienna 🇦🇹 Looking at it made me feel overwhelmed with a sense of nostalgia. Life felt lighter, simpler, and so full of love, friendship and support. Though we continued to create a great life for our family here in Bilbao, there were days when the weight of expat life has felt heavy on my shoulders. I often felt like the one & only go-to person, trying to compensate for the absence of family, solo-parenting a lot - and all of that while navigating a different environment myself, watching friends come and go again… But I wonder: Would I have achieved what I have, so cozily cuddled up in my comfort zone? I’m thinking probably not. I treasure the incredibly close bond I was able to create with my children, away from the tempting comparison and pressure to follow trends people are usually exposed to “back home”. I’m proud about the EMPOWERMENT, strength and resilience these last years have cultivated within me, pushing me far beyond my limits. 💪 📸 Photos really have the power to spark so many memories and emotions in us, don’t they? I’ve been using this flood of impressions to reflect on 🤔 What exactly it was about that previous time that felt so good? (Surprisingly, sometimes it’s very simple things, some of which - though not all - can be recreated elsewhere) 🤔 What does that say about me, and about what matters most to me? (So insightful!) 🤔 What other things have I gained in the meantime, that 7 years from now I’ll look back on, fondly and gratefully? (So empowering!) What about you? Can you relate to these reflections?
