Weekend recap! Claudio’s brother and family came down from Milan for the long weekend so it was a lot of family time! 1. French toast for Saturday morning’s breakfast 2-3. We took everyone to our favorite restaurant @osteriadelficovecchio in Grottaferatta in the Castelli Romani. 4-5. After lunch we took a stroll in Nemi and had dessert. Nemi is known for growing tiny strawberries that are delicious. They make wine from them too! 6. Francesco playing the piano with his Zio Ahres and cousin Noah. 7-10. Today’s cool breeze, finally at ease. 🫶✨ After an equatorial summer that was filled with drought and unbearable heat daily, hardly any rain to cool us down. Today, we finally put on coats. For the first time since I was in the USA in October, I felt cold. I tried to leave the house in sandals without a jacket and the cold breeze hit my nose and toes, reminding me that it’s a new season. For us, it’s a version of autumn. The cold and dry season. Temperature and sunlight only slightly change, but we feel the humidity shift. Who knows when it will rain again? A new season physically, here to remind us that life’s different seasons come with changes, challenges, ups and downs. I pulled out the next set of clothing for both of our daughters. Ariella into the 18-24 months and Anastasia into much bigger clothes than her age suggests…pulling out 6-9 months clothing for our sweet 3.5 month old feels a little unraveling, but I’m so grateful for her growth and health! Ariella is all packed up to go over to her Grammy’s for her second official sleepover because she seems to be all grown up these days, yet she’s still our baby. Ah, Riga! Our final destination on this three-city adventure and it didn't disappoint. The Old Town is charming (of course) but the immediate "new town" is full of art nouveau buildings that are just beautiful. We loved this city! Getting here: From Tallinn to Riga we took a LuxExpress coach. Total price one way for our family of four: 46€. The reclining seats, great leg space with foot rests, and a screen with access to over 200 movies, made this 4.5 hour drive fly by. It was one of the best travel days ever! A day in Riga: In the morning, we took a brilliant Free Walking Tour with Rita where we learned the history of Riga, and oriented ourselves in the Old Town. Rita was super personable, shared fascinating stories, and really engaged our children, who both said this was one of the highlights of our trip. You tip at the end what you think the two hour tour is worth. In the afternoon, we walked through Bastejkalna Park and Esplanade, rode scooters to marvel at the Art Nouveau District, shopped, and caught an English-speaking movie because our hotel was opposite the cinema and why not? Eating Out: Street Fries Kitchen: we loved this spot for fish and chips and pancakes! They have a good range of options on their menu. Lido: a Latvian food canteen with locations across Riga. Everything is in Latvian, so don't be shy about using Google translate. A fun place for authentic local food. Čili Pizza - recently opened, very extensive menu, offering more than its generously sized pizza. Can recommend the mac & cheese and Tex-Mex potatoes. Great value and they recommend you download their discount card for a further 20% off the already generous price! As with Helsinki and Tallinn previously, I could have done with one more day in Riga, not to be ungrateful! There were a couple more museums I would have been interested in and I loved just walking around, taking in the architecture, cobblestone streets and green space. I'm so glad we got to visit, and would recommend it as a destination in and of itself or tacked on to another Baltic city. Is Riga on your list? How do you like to explore new cities?

Expat Motherhood and transgenerational trauma In the fast-paced and individualistic world, the journey of expat motherhood presents a unique set of challenges. Today many moms crave a slower pace of life, prioritizing connection over productivity and mindfulness over materialism, but the world does not seem to be ready for this change yet. So as women embark on the adventure of raising children abroad, they find themselves navigating between thei internal intuition, societal expectations, the realities of foreign lands, and lack of understanding. "YOU DECIDED TO MOVE ABROAD, SO DO NOT COMPLAIN NOW" On top of that, their aspirations are often met with contradictions and internal limitations imposed by the existing reality, but also their past role models (full-time working mothers, grandmas, and absent dads!). The struggle to balance the longing for support and change and the need for internal work of one's own resistance to it is a constant battle for expat mothers, that does not get any better in a society that keeps prioritizing independence and self-sufficiency, and where reaching out for help is still seen as a sign of weakness rather than strength. Moreover, the absence of infrastructures and support systems tailored to the needs of expat mothers only exacerbates the challenges they face. Without access to affordable childcare, reliable healthcare, and a supportive community, the journey of motherhood can feel isolating and overwhelming. This dynamic also affects expat children, who often grow up with overwhelmed parents, with little resources to self-regulate themselves, let alone help their children! So they internalize the values of independence, reinforcing a reluctance to seek help when needed, perpetuating a cycle! But AWARENESS IS THE FIRST STEP... So there is hope! What does connection look like? First, stop what you’re doing and focus your attention 100% on your child. Second, get down on their level, wherever that may be, sitting down or on the floor. Next, once they’ve calmed down, with a calm presence, ask what’s wrong (or some variation of that). If they say nothing, ask them if something happened today. Give them time, yet remain close by. Also, still with a calm presence, stay curious and ask questions. Resist the need to solve or fix their problem. Continue to ask questions to help them get out what’s bothering them. Next, empathize. If you want, share a story from your childhood or present day life. Then, if you feel it’s appropriate to the situation, you can ask your child if they want you to help them brainstorm solutions or if they just want you to listen. Lastly, ask your child if they want a hug. If they say no, maybe offer a high five or whatever they usually connect with. If they still say no, ask them if they want some space on their own. How do we guide children to read? Montessori emphasizes phonics-based reading instruction, helping children understand the sounds that makeup words. Children gain the tools to decode and read independently by gradually introducing phonetic concepts. Language development is also nurtured through storytelling, poetry, and meaningful conversations. And we also read storybooks with the kids. Our library is quite extensive, so there is plenty to choose from 🤓
