Heute ist #WorldDiscoSoupDay! 🍲💃🏻🕺🏽 Das Hauptthema in diesem Jahr lautet „Save our food, save our planet!“ und konzentriert sich auf Lösungen für die Klimakrise. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage, wie die Reduzierung von Lebensmittelabfällen dazu beitragen kann, die Klimakrise zu stoppen. Jedes Jahr produziert die Welt über 2 Mrd. Tonnen Abfall, Tendenz stark steigend. Würden wir das alles auftürmen, wäre es höher als der Mount Everest. Jedes Jahr, Jahr für Jahr. 😱😱 15 % der weltweit produzierten Lebensmittel gehen nach der Ernte verloren und gelangen nie in die Läden. Weitere 17 % der Lebensmittel werden im Einzelhandel und durch Verbraucher*innen verschwendet. (FAO) Die Reduzierung der Lebensmittelverschwendung bedeutet eine Umverteilung unserer Ressourcen, um die gesamte Weltbevölkerung ernähren zu können. Lebensmittelverluste und -verschwendung sind außerdem für 8-10 % der weltweiten Treibhausgasemissionen verantwortlich. Das bedeutet, dass die Bekämpfung der Lebensmittelverschwendung auch eine Verringerung der Kohlenstoffemissionen und ihrer dramatischen Folgen für den Temperaturanstieg auf unserem Planeten bedeutet. Der World Disco Soup Day ist eine weltweite Veranstaltung, die vom @slowfoodyouthnetwork ins Leben gerufen wurde, um die Diskussion über das Thema Lebensmittelverschwendung zu fördern, Gerichte aus Lebensmittelabfällen zu kochen und den Prozess des Lernens und Zusammenseins zu genießen. Am Anfang stand das Bedürfnis, gemeinsam gegen Lebensmittelverschwendung zu kämpfen und dabei Spaß zu haben, sich zu treffen und zu tanzen. Thanks to everyone who helped with our three fundraisers during our World Down Syndrome Day celebrations. Pals Socks raised over $700; DSACK ranked third out of 31 nonprofits in the Crank and Boom Pints for a Purpose; and while we are still waiting for the official results from Penn Station, we do know that the Somerset store was the highest performing store for their Round Up for Down Syndrome campaign. #tbt to last month when our Site Director got to visit with several different groups in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day! We started the week of WDSD visiting Walsh University and speaking with members of the football team and the Council for Exceptional Children on campus about how to live #GenerationG day in and day out. Our friends from Burns & McDonnell then welcomed Megan to both of their locations to share about GiGi's Playhouse and the impact on our community with their employees...fun fact, GiGi's is the 2024 Charity of Choice for Burns & McDonnell! They are amazing supporters of GiGi's, and we are so grateful for the opportunities this awards us. Ms. Ardman's class at Strausser Elementary School was eager to learn about Down syndrome and how they can support their friend Grace (shoutout to our friend Maria for writing this great book to share, 47 Teeny Tiny Pieces). These little learners truly embody what it means to be accepting, generous, and kind from a young age. Our final stop for WDSD was at Goodyear Headquarters in Akron where we shared our gratitude for the blimp ride donation to our most recent live auction, but also had the chance to educate their ADAPT Employee Resource Group about GiGi's Playhouse and ways to get involved. Mingling with their employees was great!
