𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘐𝘴 𝘏𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘈 𝘋𝘢𝘺 𝘋𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘜𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘨𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯 𝘚𝘰 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵? In the UK alone, approximately 6,000 children each year are born with a syndrome, which does not have a name. Some children, including Mia, who are affected may be described as having Global Development Delay (GDD) or failing to thrive. I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2020. I had a couple-year long career in case management, harm reduction, therapy, and social work, which was rewarding but drove me into the ground and didn’t give me the time to properly care for myself. I was suffering from autistic burnout (pre-diagnosis) and the problem was worsened by my frustration with my burnout symptoms impacting my ability to “function like normal”. After taking a few months off to move back home and focus on my health, I was diagnosed (at 25 years old) with Autism. My diagnosis made me kinder on myself and more understanding of my challenges in light of the new diagnosis, and after learning to work with (as opposed to against) my brain I am now looking into doing Harm Reduction work (in direct service and policy) and potentially pursuing a PhD in Public Policy. I still don’t “function like normal”, but who the hell wants ‘normal’ anyway ! In this episode, Vas shares about their experiences with substance use, ways society can provide support and direction in harm reduction. As a counsellor, I organised Autism Awareness Assembly in NGFS,Alaknanda and was an essential part of it too. I felt very overwhelmed with the responses that I got after the performances by principal ma’am, teachers and students. Everybody appreciated it and felt that there is very less awareness about it and we should raise awareness and create an inclusive environment for these kids. Students enthusiastically participated and demonstrated all the required emotions for both skit and dance. I am very glad that Schools have started talking about it. The change is slow and steady but very essential and beautiful ❤️❤️ Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD is a neuro-developmental disorder that leads to communication, social and behavioural challenges. To create awareness, acceptance and appropriate supports for children with ASD every year 2nd April is celebrated as World Autism Awareness Day and month of April starting from 2nd till 30th is observed as World Autism Awareness Month. In the skit, a school setup was seen where a child played the role of autistic child and showcased his problems in the class. The skit also depicted how teachers and students helped the child who faced difficult situations in different areas of the class. The dance was based on the song Anthem of Autism which is directed by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment- Government of India. It depicted the emotions of a child who has autism. The dance also gave the message that more than a disability Autism is about having a pure heart and being very sensitive. It is about finding a way to survive in an overwhelming and confusing world. For these reasons and many more, people with ASD can add a tremendous amount of value to any organization. 🤔 Yet, according to a 2023 survey, approximately 77% of autistic adults living within Canada are unemployed: this is not for a lack of skill or desire to work, but is actually the result of a society that was not necessarily built with neurodivergence in mind. We're just going to say it: Often the barrier to employment for autistic job seekers is not Autism itself, but rather a lack of UNDERSTANDING of Autism from the average Employer.
