When you think you have failed... When I decided to leave my marriage I felt like such a failure. I felt like a failure at being a wife, a mom and at keeping my family together. It took me down a very dark hole of self sabotage and of feeling so unworthy. I had no clue who I was anymore and to be honest I didn’t know if I would ever find me again. I was so good at putting a smile on my face and telling everyone I was ok but inside I was totally broken. That was 5 years ago. But today I am a very different person .... I know I am not a failure, I know that I am so worthy, I know God ( universe / source ) had plans for me and staying where I was, I would have never been able to be who I am today. Was it easy getting to where I am .... hell no! Am I living the perfect life ... absolutely not! I still get triggered, I still have my ‘bad’ days and mess up but the difference now is that I can truly say I love me and when you get there that is totally a different ball game. Sorry graduates, you've been taught the wrong methods. Have you attended career guidance from your school? They advised you to write a lengthy résumé, describing yourself as much as you can. So you drafted a 3-4 page résumé and expect to get a reply from recruiters... I mean, all you need is your shiny diploma or degree, right? 3 months later, you are desperately looking for jobs with no replies. Here's the problem: HRs and recruiters don't have time to read résumés, they use a software called ATS (Applicant Tracking System) to track keywords. If the résumé passes the ATS, the recruiter spends only 6-10 seconds scanning through the first half page. And if it doesn't contain what they wish to see, it'll end up in the shredding machine. If you don't wish for that to happen, here are 4 things to avoid: 1) Don't go more than one page 3-4 pages are a relic of the past. Today, 1 page is all you need. 2) Don't write in paragraphs Paragraphs are a turn-off, it's hard to read. Use bullet points and concise sentences. 3) Don't tell your life story Recruiters don't need to know what happened. They are looking for achievements or any highlighted projects. 4) Don't lump all your skills together Separate and specify your soft and hard skills. Place them at the top half page of the résumé. 6 years ago, I was the lousiest person I've ever known. • I was the last in my class • Failed GCE 'O' levels terribly • Dropped out of polytechnic Today: • I secured a Diploma • Worked as an engineer • Experienced multiple job and project experiences If I had the chance to relive my youth, here's what I would do: 1) Experiment and fail often I was afraid of failure because of the shame it would bring me. In a society that values perfection and success, those who fail early often learn the most. 2) Explore my leisures I remember my teacher telling me to stop my hobby of painting figurines because it was affecting my grades. Because of that, I lost interest in my leisure and got nothing in the end. My grades on my 'O' levels today are still 3 E8s. 3) Quit doing the things I hate I was doing things I hated, trying to cramp every info of the textbook. I didn't want to end up in the technical college (ITE), it was an embarrassing place to be in. Turns out, my life in ITE was the best part of my education.
