Mattes is...something else. You will never know if you're getting silly, sarcastic Mattes or dead serious Mattes until you're halfway into the conversation. Also, if it's serious Mattes, all I can tell you is watch out. Mattes will joke around and flirt with you, then 2.5 seconds later start telling you about the mission, if you're trustworthy that is. We don't see a LOT of Mattes in book 1, but rest assured, we will learn much more about him and his motivations in book 2! Chaos? Spell Bound by @ftlukens Genre: YA, fantasy, LGBTQ+ romance ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ Whenever I need a quick, fun, heartwarming read I will always return to FT Lukens. And that’s what I did here, turning to Spell Bound after a disappointing DNF and an incoming reading slump, and it was the best choice I could’ve made. I felt so so happy whilst reading this book and it felt like a warm hug! One thing I love about FT Lukens’ books is the way they incorporate subtle societal criticisms into their work, and in this one they focused on corrupt government and leadership. This is something I’m particularly passionate about and I found how they wove these themes into this wonderful magical world. Another thing I loved about this book (and Lukens’ work in general) is how accessible their writing style is. Reading their work always makes me feel safe and welcome. I loved Rook and Sun as protagonists and found them wonderfully unique and relatable in their own ways. Their slowly blossoming romance with respectful boundaries was so sweet and uplifting and I adored their story. This book had really unique side characters too, and though I wish we got to spend a bit more time with them, I felt that they really added to the story, and I loved the found family elements that slowly developed across the book. I do wish this had been slightly longer to flesh out the ending a bit more, but I loved it so so much and had so much fun whilst reading it! I definitely recommend Spell Bound for fans of fast-paced heartwarming queer stories with lovely happy endings. Or tell me a random fact about yourself ☺️ I went into this book fairly blind, I knew there would be magical letters but that’s the extent of what I was prepared for. Overall the story starts out at a good pace and it was easy to fall for the magical atmosphere. I enjoyed the character driven plot and following Iris and Roman’s journey. Iris was easily relatable with all that she has to go through and the decisions she has to make. Their relationship was definitely what had me turning the pages so quickly and I loved every moment between them. The only thing I wish there was more of is world building and lore. I know it eventually comes but it would have been a little nice to have more sprinkled in this book. I found the war between gods and the magic system so fascinating, I think it would have been nice to expand even more on it. Overall I liked this book a lot and totally get all the hype around it. And to answer my question, I have had a penpal! I met an exchange student at camp when I was younger who lived in Japan. •REVIEW• 📖 The Guidal: Unearthing secrets ✍️ Roxy Eloise ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ *contains minor spoilers if you haven't read book 1* Firstly I feel like I need some charcoal pjs and a peppermint hot chocolate while reading this series... I loved the world building in this book and the character developments. This book is the second in a trilogy and unearths lots of secrets literally. The love triangle is an emotional rollercoaster still unsure if she will ever pick one and if she does, which one? I'm still routing for Pax *Team Pax through and through* Tayo is growing on me, however I still do not trust him and I'm not sure why? I'm loving the magic building, someone in the book club mentioned it was like the room of requirement Harry Potter feel and now I totally agree. I feel I would be a "Heeler" and love to branch out too either side of the circle. @roxyeloiseofficial knows how to keep you wanting more.. the queen of cliffhangers! I’ve read this series in audiobook format so when I learned that they were reprinting the series with stunning new covers I just had to run to the bookstore and get them! I have to be real… I get a little tired of the “surface level” descriptions of Where Darkness Cannot Follow, because, sure, it’s about people fighting monsters in a canyon and that’s cool, buuuut… It’s so much *more* than that to me. It’s REALLY about what’s going on inside my character’ hearts not what’s happening around them. WDCF is packed with messages that “just happened” as I wrote, and each one is deeply important to me. Some are only sampled in book 1 and will be deepened throughout the trilogy, but others we see in high focus in book 1. Saint by Adrienne Young ☠️ Do you ever buy books just because you need the set to be complete? I read Fable and Namesake last year, but I actually bought Saint before I read Namesake. I just knew the covers looked cool together and I wanted the set complete. Saint is The World of The Narrows Book 0, a prequel to Fable because it is about her parents. In my opinion, this book is meant to be read after reading Fable and Namesake, in publication order. I enjoyed getting to see the history of Fable’s parents and understanding Saint’s background. However, the plot just wasn’t exciting enough for me in the first half of the book. Eventually, it picked up and I was interested to see how things fell into place. Maybe I should have read it closer to the other two books, when I was still in my pirate era. I really love Saint as a character but I wanted more depth and romance in the story. This is a YA series, so I get that this could be a me problem, not a problem with the book. I think this is a great series for someone looking for pirate adventures, strong female characters, and a tad of romance. Saint is on my #backlistbooks24 challenge list. Today's spotlight is on the Daughter of Hades! One of the main locations in the Daughter of Hades series is London! I have visited London a few times now and absolutely love it. There is a lot of history there and is fun to see all the different types of cultures within the city. My favorite place is Kensington Gardens and Palace! Chrys, Huntley, and AJ get to venture throughout the city in book 1, and Huntley shares a flat with Pothos in the other books of the series. It is funny I picked London when that is how it is set up in the book Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips (which I just read recently). Review: This book took me by complete surprise. It has sat on my TBR for years and now I’m kicking myself for not picking it up sooner. First of all, the writing is magical. The lyrical prose made me swoon continuously. I loved how it felt like I was in the midst of a fairytale/folktale the whole way through. The characters were also very impressive. I embraced them immediately, flaws and all. I was mystified by the power dynamics and magical abilities of Tarisai and her fellow council members. The villain of the story was equally fascinating. Her motives for acting the way she did were clear, and at times, even understandable. It does not excuse her choices but it humanized her in a way that I appreciated. The pacing was also perfection in my opinion. There was time taken for character development but not so much that I got bored. The action was visceral and propelled the story forward. It made listening to this book very addictive. Overall, this is a superb fantasy novel. It’s both mesmorizing as well as memorable. I can’t wait to move on to book two! Go read this one right now! I loved the romance between the FMC (Alesta) and the MMC (Kyr) - I’m not always a huge fan of the friends to lovers trope but thought this one did it well. I also really enjoyed the found family angle with Rina and Lor (and Mico but… that’s all I’m gonna say about him). While there were some plot twists that I predicted, there were plenty that I didn’t. Tips for naming characters and places. I'm not sure I have any tips for this. For places, my world is a different version of the US, so many city/town names are the same or similar. They might not be exact, but they're semi-based in real places. For character names, it really comes down to if it feels right for me. I actually can't write at all until I know my character's names, so this is really important to me. Finn was a very easy character to name. I think I might have had the name first, and a vague character followed it. On the other hand, Celeste is a name I wouldn't have picked out for anyone other than the Celeste in my book. I spend a lot of time searching name lists until I find one that I feel fits the vibe of the character. So, here’s the thing. . Sometimes as a writer, it’s really tempting to try and be happy and perky all the time. To try and say all the good things about your books and to act like everything is going peachy! But, honestly... . It’s not always like that. . Being a writer has a lot of ups and downs. It’s a lot of, “Nobody cares if I write this, so why even bother?” and “Why am I wasting my life, trying to put words on the paper that nobody will ever read?” . It’s really disheartening sometimes. . Oftentimes, for me, writing is like trying to roll a huge boulder up the mountain. I see other people at the top. They’ve already made it. I see other people down below me, and I try and help them, but I’m struggling under the weight of my boulder. So when I try and reach down, I almost get crushed by the weight of my burden. . And when I try to ask for help, *I* feel like the burden. I feel like I’m begging. I feel like people will think I’m pathetic. “Do something clever! Make it feel organic! Don’t beg or whine or plead.” But sometimes, I just can’t. . So here I am, exhausted, pausing to ask a favor. I’m not trying to annoy you. I’m not trying to beg. ~*~ Book Review ~*~ Graceling by Kristin Cashore is another book I've had sitting on my shelf for an embarrassingly long time and never got to. I think someone recommended it to me but I can't for the life of me remember who, so if you're reading this thank you for the recommendation. I absolutely adore the world of Graceling. The worldbuilding is fantastically done, and the concept of Graces--a cool twist on the magic/powers so common in fantasy--is fun and refreshing. The characters pulled me in right away and I loved every single one of them, though I wish a few had gotten more attention and "screen" time. You can't introduce me to an adorable science nerd prince and only give him a few scenes, guys. The thing that disappointed me about Graceling was the pacing. While the plot itself--full of court intrigue, mad kings, deadly treks through wild places, and romance, some of my favorite things--was thrilling, the pacing of it all just... didn't work. At times it dragged on and felt like nothing would ever happen and at times was rushed and lost crucial details. Some character arcs suffered as a result, particularly that of our protagonist Katsa. And after so much buildup, the fate befalling the villain, a truly chilling character worthy of an incredible climactic fight, was lackluster at best. All the pieces of Graceling were things I loved. The ideas were there, and they were wonderful, but the execution fell a little short in places. All in all I'd still say Graceling is worth a read, if just for the truly great cast of characters and fascinating world. But unfortunately this one isn't as memorable as I'd hoped. No book hangover for me this time. The messy middle is for real. I’m in the thick of major revisions of book2s middle, not to mention in the middle of a trilogy. A lot of things coming together at this part… for the individual book as well as the series. And my scenes holding the information are a royal mess. I am using color-coded sticky notes to try to keep every chess move storyline and point straight. These are only the ones that are causing me trouble. so hard pulling everything together succinctly so these scenes do what they need to do…. And are pleasant to read.
