What's Dori's story? Dori is a card-carrying native New Orleanian, a dominator of dance floors, and an all-around super dope human. And as if that wasn't enough, she has a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, and a Masters in the Art of Science Teaching. Her teaching experience spans over 25 years, including middle school, secondary, undergraduate, and graduate levels. Dori is currently the Campus Director for Faculty and Instructional Development at Valencia College. Since joining the board at Page 15, Dori has served as both president and vice-president, providing steady guidance and expertise to help capture the power of our pedagogical approach. Last week at Monona Terrace, the @mplfoundation hosted the largest Lunch for Libraries ever, with nearly 800 guests in attendance! The event grossed over $137,800, which will go towards keeping the @wibookfest free for attendees, providing free books at key events, and creating an accessible space for our community to share important conversations while celebrating books and reading. Lunch for Libraries also helps fund youth literacy efforts at the library, including play materials, programs and outreach. The event was anchored by author Tommy Orange, who spoke with Aaron Bird Bear, the inaugural Director of Tribal Relations at UW-Madison from 2019-2023. Orange was there to discuss his new book, Wandering Stars, which was just released at the end of February. It’s #nationalpoetrymonth! To celebrate, we had the privilege of facilitating a creative writing workshop inspired by Gil Scott Heron in collaboration with the @chicory_baltimore Project at the Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum last weekend! This event was completely inspired by his debut album, “Pieces of Man” (1971). Heron, known for his bold and unapologetic spoken word, was an inspirational and prolific artist among musicians, spoken word artists, poets, and civil rights activists alike. In fact, Track 10: “The Needle’s Eye” is our namesake! The song’s lyrics, “Without a brand new sense of freedom / A brand new sense of time / Him may go and stand alone now and / Leave the hate and fear behind” are fundamental to our mission of critical literacy, youth empowerment, and change agentry. Participants engaged in an album listening party and then were tasked with the exercise of penning their own poem inspired by and/or incorporating lyrics from Scott-Heron’s album. We were blown away by the powerful compositions of attendees. Each and every participant exhibited masterful creativity. Not only did our co-founders, Jaelon and Nicolle, co-facilitate but we were also joined by the inaugural Academy’s Youth Literary Arts Laureates, who are also scholars at @eastonhighschool! We were so grateful that they joined us in fostering a space for radical poetry and community building. We've had a busy couple of weeks with deliveries ... 90+ port pillows were delivered to St Andrew's Hospital (Chemo Suite), cushions delivered to the Icon Centre for patients undergoing cancer treatments, cushion and port pillow delivered to a patient undergoing open heart surgery, and over 1,700 children's books for over 360 primary school students. 📚 March 1st marked the start of National Reading Month, and we couldn't think of a better way to celebrate than by igniting a love for books in our kids! The children in our Residential Program and youths from our Mental Health Crisis Respite Programs all convened for an exhilarating kick-off event filled with excitement!
