American Love Call is the 2019 sophomore album from Durand Jones & The Indications. The group has a very throwback sound to the style of 70s soul of artists such as Donny Hathaway, Otis Redding and Curtis Mayfield. Even their aesthetic is very 70s soul inspired as seen by the name and cover it actually originally made me think this was some old release from around that time until I actually saw the release date of the album. The modern interpolations of the style lets DJ&TI sound have a more unique feel in the current music landscape. Durand Jones & The Indications - American Love Call Durand Jones & the Indications didn’t expect much of a career after their first album in 2016. In fact, they broke up following a single gig before going their separate ways. But the unexpected happened, and they became a hit among both critics and indie record stores. By 2018 the band, with new keyboardist Steve Okonski, were signed to Dead Oceans for their second album. Recorded over that summer, American Love Call was released in March 2019. Across American Love Call, Jones and co. chart a new course from their past. While the debut album was more focused on fiery full-band performances evocative of the soul of the mid 1960s, American Love Call sets its sights squarely on the turn of the 70s. Echoes of What’s Goin’ On, Where I’m Coming From, Dance to the Music, and Stand! are abound, especially with the generous layers of strings that coat songs like “Long Way Home” and “Circles.” The smoky “Walk Away” gets a strong hit of the electric sitar and flutters of harp that feel utterly luxurious. Thankfully, the band still sounds great slowed down. Drummer and co-lead singer Aaron Frazer is as nimble and rock solid as ever, and both Kyle Houpt’s bass and Blake Rhein’s guitar have an added warmth to them that make them fit in perfectly with the smoothness of “Listen to Your Heart,” “Court of Love,” and “Too Many Tears.” Okonski’s keyboards take the spotlight on “How Can I Be Sure,” and it’s absolutely gorgeous. While most of the album focuses on straightforward love songs, the standout opener “Morning in America” goes for something bigger and pays dividends. This is the one that most evokes “What’s Goin’ On,” serving as a State of the Union for the turbulence of 2018 and 2019. Frazer’s lyricism is pointed but never pandering, and evokes the breadth of America in sweeping fashion. It’s also a damn good road trip song. American Love Call is Durand Jones & The Indications’ strongest album.

Released in March of 2019. “American Love Call,” from Durand Jones and the Indications is the sophomore release. This is some killer retro soul. It’s excellent. Heard a track while having a drink in a dive bar in the West Village last week. Had to go buy the album as soon as I got home. The opening track, “Morning in America,” is a solemn and powerful song. It’s phenomenal and lyrically calls out a nation where the haves live the good life while poisoned water, drugs, and injustice are sad facts of the have nots. The album has a very slick production and the musicianship is first class. Durand Jones & The Indications are a contemporary R&B/soul band created by the songwriting trio of singer Durand Jones, singer/drummer Aaron Frazer, and guitarist Blake Rhein.
