Finding time to cook a "treat" meal can be challenging, yet it feels good, especially when experimenting (even lightly) and of course when cooking for the right company 🙂 The twist(s) here are: the total absence of carbs (like bread & such) in the 50% beef, 50% pork mix (like we'd do with a beef burger) the koukaki lemon leaf infused basmati rice (a bit of a Thai infusion) To my surprise, just 4 of those (with the corresponding rice and sauce) were enough for me, while I thought I'd go for 6 or 7! Like always, I went for at least 4 portions with 1,1 kg of meat and 0,5 kg of rice. Quantity does not really increase shopping time, cooking time or energy, so going for 4-6 portions instead of 2-3 saves time & energy 🙃 (not to mention money). Congrats Katou & Eduardo 💑 B.O.U.L.O.M. was a great surprise - a full sized restaurant is well hidden inside what appears to be a cafe! I won't be rating this place since I was there as a wedding guest, yet knowing: a. what we had is part of the usual buffet b. the thoughtful way this buffet works out and of course, considering the mouthwatering beef ribs (that were boiled the old fashioned way, with carrots, garlic, herbs and such for 6 hours before entering the open flame grill) and their ingenious garnish, mashed potato donuts 🙃 it is my duty to report B.O.U.L.O.M.'s buffet would easily make it to the very top of my ratings, along with places such as Ma Shaa Allah in Zanzibar & O Kakias in Salamina. Food has to be fun & mouthwatering! The touristy souvlaki piazza of Monastiraki is widely known as "the place to be" when it comes to souvlaki, especially in older generation & tourist circles! Yet anyone who is able to taste, smell or see food for what it really is, can easily tell what are the shortcomings of those places. The Savvas branch on Ermou is the exception to the rule, yet w/o the Savvas spec! The andreasfoood spec results in a whole different souvlaki experience, with culinary references from various parts of Greece, including the north & the Aegean islands. I go for a pita with country sausage & ask for the following: 1. sausage cut in two separate parts (instead of simply half-cut) 2. sausage grilled very well over charcoal (instead of deep-fried) 3. pita w/o oil, medium grilled over charcoal (instead of hot plate w. oil) 4. spicy cheese mash (instead of tzatziki or thousand island sauce) 5. more tomato (3-4 slices instead of 1-2) The result may be far from what Savvas offers by default, yet I give Savvas 8,5/10 for being able to accommodate all of the above with success. After abandoning my kitchen & eating all courses out for a month, with the exception of one BBQ (ok braai!) in the middle of the Kalahari dessert, returning in such a familiar place felt good! After 1600 km & 72 hours (of mostly driving & sleeping) from Kuruman to Twee Rivieren in South Africa, to Kaa North, to Kang and Ghanzi in Botswana, the tourist town of Maun provided for us the first decent eatery & one of the very few in Maun, Germain's French Connection @ frenchconnectionmaun, I give it 8,5/10! We tried really hard to find local Botswana food but it was impossible to our surprise, with the exception of street food stalls with visibly low food hygiene. Not bad considering we found no eateries at all in the town of Ghanzi. Food quality is still not granted, even in developed parts of Africa & even for travellers. ps do not attempt the Twee Rivieren - Kang route via Kaa North Gate unless you have: 1. high snakeproof boots, 2. second spare, 3. sat phone, 4. extra food, water & fuel, 5. and most importantly, 2 sets of 1 metre long bush cutters or a 4x4 you don't mind scratching on both sides! This place has some of the most interesting ingredients, no surprise it has been there since the late eighties. I go with provolone, spicy salami, plenty of fresh basil (which I bring from home), and a range of antipasto: sauteed onion, peppers and aubergine, on a white thinned crumb ciabatta. Today I went relatively late and my first choice of bread wasn't available, so I went with a whole grain baguette. You don't want to grill this 'dwich!
