Anyone who has spent some time shark diving with us in the 2000’s while onboard our previous vessel Princess II might remember the legendary "Kallel". This grand old fellah seemed to show a lot of wisdom and method in his movements for 7 wonderful consecutive years of visits to us at the Neptune Islands. We’ve not seen him for over 11 years now and miss his chubby face. Interestingly he had probably reached his maximum size at that time, as to our eye he didn't seem to grow any longer over the 7 years that we knew this particularly chunky 4m shark. The Magnificent ‘Mulga’ was a regular at the Neptune Islands in most years between 2001-2014. He is one of the largest resident male sharks that we ever experienced in our 50+ year history. When first profiled we estimated his length to be around 4 metres in length (~13ft.) Thirteen years later he grew closer to around 5m long. (~16ft) In 2001, we suspected he was already a mature adult probably a minimum of 10-15 years old. Then these extra 13 years of residency are added we might assume his overall age approaching 30 years. Sadly we haven’t seen this grand old fellow in nearly 10 years and suspect he’s passed on, however new legends in-the-making continue to appear as Neptune Island regulars and seem ready to take his place. I was very pleasantly impressed with the work done by the Rodney Fox's crew during the two Great White Shark Expeditions with Shark Biology Course which took place in April 2023 at the Neptune Islands. A brilliant crew composed mostly of young people worked very hard every day, from the early morning to late at night, to make our guests feel at ease and providing everything was necessary so that the operations on board and underwater took place as planned. I was particularly impressed by the dexterity with which the bait was handled, so that the sharks were never led to collide with the cages, and minimizing the number of instances in which the sharks managed to take the bait. During the two Great White Shark Expeditions with Shark Biology Course that took place in April 2023 we were lucky enough to see the iconic dorsal fin of a great white shark on the sea's surface many times. In this picture you can see three guests of our 24-29 April 2023 Great White Shark Expedition with Shark Biology Course about to descend to the ocean floor in the special bottom cage that we use at the Neptune Islands, South Australia. The cage is built for four persons, therefore it carries the divemaster or cage captain and three guests. The guests willing to use the special bottom cage must have a SCUBA diving certification, which can be PADI Open Water or equivalent. The guests who don't have a diving qualification can still use the 'classic' surface cage. Therefore everyone can join the expeditions and cage dive, you don't have to be a SCUBA diver... However if you're a SCUBA diver you get to use both the surface cage and the bottom cage, which is clearly better because it gives you more chances to have great encounters with more great white sharks. The 24-29 April 2023 Great White Shark Expedition with Shark Biology Course has just ended, and it was another great success. We were able to see many great white sharks, from 1.8 meter up to 4.5 meters long. We were able to dive both in the surface cage and in the bottom cage many times, and both at the North Neptunes and at the South Neptunes. Tonight the expedition finished and we had to say goodbye to another group of great guests. I will treasure the memories of these beautiful days spent with them in the realm of great white sharks. Here's a picture of a beautiful male great white shark that I took a couple of days ago at the North Neptune Islands. The last two days of the 18-23 April 2023 Great White Shark Expedition with Shark Biology Course in Australia have been as good as the previous ones. We were able to see several great whites each day, and every day we were able to dive both in the surface cage and in the bottom cage. When the expedition finally concluded and we returned to Port Lincoln, we said goodbye to a group of incredibly nice guests with whom it was a real pleasure to share this extraordinary experience. The 18-23 April 2023 Great White Shark Expedition with Shark Biology Course in Australia is continuing to be a great success. Yesterday I had one of the best dives of my life. An incredibly beautiful 4 m male great white shark hung around our cage on the ocean floor at the Neptune Islands for the entire duration of the dive, not leaving us for a second. The second day of our 18-23 April 2023 Great White Shark Expedition with Shark Biology Course was as awesome as the first one. We had at least four great white sharks up to four meters long circling the boat, the surface cage and the bottom cage for the entire day. The first of our April 2023 Great White Shark Expeditions with Shark Biology Course in Australia is off to the best possible start. Only after a few minutes after we arrived at the Neptune Islands, the first great white shark, an about four meter animal, arrived to welcome us. From that moment on, great white sharks, a total of five individuals, remained constantly in the vicinity of the boat until dark. All expedition guests had the opportunity to see the great whites very well and many times from the boat, from the surface cage, and from the bottom cage. It was just spectacular. Baby Jaws The Neptune Islands off South Australia have long been known as a calling place to some of the largest great white sharks ever experienced on the planet. Most sharks we observe however are smaller sub-adults ranging between 3 to 4 m. Like fighter jets, this seems to be the ultimate size for successful predation of the many agile fur seals at the breeding colonies there. Occasionally we experience tremendous mature female sharks over 5m in length, but surprisingly to some, it’s actually rarer that we actually see juvenile sharks that measure less than 2m long. Interestingly smaller 2-3m sharks seem to get their size vastly underestimated by many observers, in direct contrast to the fantastic exaggerations that larger sharks are well known to be prone to. Newborn sharks are be born at a an already quite impressive size of up to 1.5 metres long, and sharks like this sub-2m juvenile may be less than a couple of years old. Such small sharks are thought not to have developed their jaws and teeth sufficiently to be effective in hunting mammalian prey. They are also quite likely to be beaten up and risk injury during predation on quite formidable and protesting adult fur seals. Juvenile white sharks are normally found more so at other geographical locations chasing schools of fish and/or other rays and smaller shark species for food. Perhaps the silver trevally fish, abundant at the Neptune’s have attracted this shark’s attention more so than the fur seals, or perhaps he is actually feeling ready to take on his first seal pup? One thing is known however is that even these little guys have a whole lot of charisma that is hard to match in any other shark species, and its always 'great' to see any size white shark. I love this picture that I took in June 2016 at the Neptune Islands, South Australia. It portrays a yellowtail kingfish or kingfish or yellowtail amberjack, speeding up as a great white shark appears on the scene. Even when the white shark is apparently not the main subject of the photo, its majestic presence always puts it at the center of attention. Fish behavior is always an important signal to warn us to pay attention to the possible arrival of a shark. We rarely cage dive after the sun goes down however when we do it’s more likely on an extended longer itinerary, on a calm evening and certainly more probable at the end of the shorter days during late Autumn and early Winter. It is more so then that the sharks stay more active into the twilight hours and later into the night. The thing about great whites at night is that in the gloom they see you a whole lot better than we see them - as U/W Photographer David Pearlman can well testify here. And then if we get tempted to put our lights on we unfortunately ruin our night vision altogether and/or the sharks tend to stay more distant. This surreal experience is always better to do with a full moon down over a shallow sandy bottom. Once we can see the dark sharky shapes looming in close a well timed strobe flash can reveal surprising results. Covered by a school of silver trevallies, a great white shark is coming straight to us in the cage suspended over the bottom at the Neptune Islands, South Australia. On the Great White Shark Expeditions in Australia we use two different cages: the surface cage and the bottom cage. The surface cage stays at the surface and can be used by anyone. We have a surface fed system / hookah system for the surface cage: tanks are on the boat and each person in the cage breathes through a regulator on a long hose. No SCUBA qualification and no experience in diving is needed for the surface cage. The visibility from the surface cage is very good, usually about 20-30 meters. The bottom cage goes down to the sea bottom, usually between 15 and 20 meter deep, and can be used only by guests that have a basic SCUBA qualification, Open Water or equivalent. The visibility from the bottom cage varies between 7 and 20 meters. This is why we have different prices for the guests who are SCUBA divers and can use both types of cages, and for the guests who don't have a SCUBA qualification and therefore can use only the surface cage. If you're going to use only the surface cage, you're going to pay a lower price.
