Here’s an In situ shot of the first Cuban tree frog (Osteopilus septentrionalis) I saw in the Bahamas. Cuban tree frogs are the largest tree frog native to North America and originate from Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands. These large frogs are highly adaptable and have adapted to the harsh and varied environments of the Caribbean in a variety of ways. The Cuban tree frog has skin that is fused to their skull, reducing water loss as there are fewer blood vessels in this area compared to other tree frogs. Additionally, the species can survive in brackish water unlike most other amphibians. These amphibians are surprisingly tolerant of urbanization as well, and I found several individuals like this one around the hotel grounds. The adaptability of this species coupled with their size has unfortunately allowed them to become an invasive species on many other Caribbean islands and in the Southeastern United States. Despite their invasive status in other parts of the world, I enjoyed getting to see my first individuals of this species in their native range. I never really liked walking up and down mountains but heck, my hands were tied on this one. It was enjoyable though. Here are some of the great finds, at least for me, during the assessment: Birds: Mangrove blue flycatcher (Cyornis rufigastra -italicized), Glossy Swiftlet (Collocalia esculenta-italicized), Blue-tailed bee-eater (Merops philippinus-italicized), respectively. Spider: Philippine dwarf tarantula (Phlogiellus baeri-italicized) Snake: Asian vine snake (Aheatulla prasina-italicized) Anuran: Mindanao splash frog (Staurois natator-italicized) All organisms were pre-identified and some were confirmed with the help of experts. Two bird species identities were confirmed by Sir Cromwel; Anuran identity was confirmed by Maam Marian Dara Tagoon. #anuran #spider #birds

Happy Endangerd Species Day Species: Kihansi Spray Toad The Kihansi Spray Toad is probably one of the rarest animals I have seen since they are extinct in the wild. The species was endemic to Tanzania at the Kihansi River Waterfall which provided high humidity needed for the species survival, so their range is only a few acres. Unlike most amphibians, they give birth to live young that are fully developed (no tadpoles or eggs). Their extinction was caused by the construction of a dam upstream which reduced the amount of water reaching the waterfall. During a dry season one year, the waterfall wasn’t able to produce moisture to support the toads causing a massive loss of habitat for the species. Along with that other variables like chytridiomycosis a fungi that is extremely deadly to amphibians was introduced and chemicals from pollutants upstream aided in the extinction of the species. Although extinct in the wild the Bronx Zoo and Toledo Zoo have been working to maintain a captive population of Kihansi Spray Toads. The Kihansi Spray Toad is the first amphibian species extinct in the wild to be reintroduced to its native range. Conservation efforts have been working to set up artificial mist sprinkling systems and remove any signs of chytridiomycosis before reintroduction. Gray Treefrog (Hyla versicolor) Here in the northeast, it’s not uncommon to hear the musical trill of the Gray Treefrog. Without hearing this call where i’m from, it would be nearly impossible to differentiate between Hyla versicolor and Hyla chrysoscelis (The Cope’s Gray). These are fairly large treefrogs and typically are seen sporting that mottled gray coloration, but can vary pretty drastically depending on the environment. Note the light spot just below the eye and the inner thighs that are bright orange-yellow when exposed. True to their names, they spend much of the year in trees, where they are perfectly designed for bark camouflage. Averaging only 19-38 mm long, these are some of the smallest anurans in North America! A “good” walk at Mt Tozer section of Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) National Park with @_faunagraphic and @jasminez back in January yielded a couple of these Kutini boulder frogs (Cophixalus kulakula). It's #springtime again and the #matingseason for many species has started or, as it's the case for these #toads in the picture, will start very soon. I took this of a #mating #couple of this #appennine yellow-bellied Toads (Bombina variegata pachypus), during their moment of #intimacy , few springs ago when, together with some colleagues, we were studying a very peculiar population of these #amphibians in #campania region. Seeing Canyon tree frogs (Hyla arenicolor) along the riparian habitat was one of my highlights in Arizona! These frogs are interesting as their colors often match the surrounding rock substrates in their rocky canyon bottom habitats. Individuals from limestone environments tend to exhibit lighter hues, while those from areas predominantly made up of granite may display a pinkish tint. Let’s talk about an Arizona amphibian! This is the Lowland leopard frog (Lithobates yavapaiensis). Throughout my week spent at Aravaipa Canyon, this was the most abundant herp, occupying the roadside streams and flooded temporary pools. Happy #WorldFrogDay! An incredible day to celebrate one of the most diverse group of organisms on our planet. But make no mistake, we are losing frogs at an alarming rate. 41% of Anurans are threatened with extinction. They are disappearing faster than mammals or birds, yet, we still struggle to promote them in the conservation limelight they deserve. These incredible organisms are bio-indicators and important components of our food webs. Like all critters in a natural space, they are critically important to maintain the ecosystem. Without frogs, we would lose a key food source for many animals. We would eliminate a massive predator of insects, including mosquitos. We would lose a key group that has advanced our medical field dramatically. We would lose species with deep cultural significance. When we lose a species to extinction, we lose a part of our planet's history forever. Since 1980, up to 200 frog species have been wiped out from existence. Never again will we see species such as the Golden Toad, Sri Lanka bubble-nest frog, Sharp-nosed bush frog, Mountain mist frog, the Mount Glorious day frog, or the Chiriqui harlequin frog. I don't want to just know species from books or only in captivity. I want to see frogs thriving in the wild. Living in intricately balanced and interconnected ecosystems. Happy #WorldFrogDay! It’s fitting that Frog Day falls right around the first day of spring, when most of these guys are just getting active for the year. Here’s a quintessential seasonal critter, the tiny spring peeper, gazing out into the big world. A dangerous world for sure, but a wet world for which frogs have been built to survive, as they have been doing for millions of years. Even critters as diminutive as this have seen great success in their time on the planet, as spring peepers are prevalent in nearly any wet area in their range during their breeding season. But it can’t be ignored that many frogs are in danger of extinction, as amphibians are one of the most imperiled groups of animals in the world. Threats like habitat destruction, disease, and invasive species have already killed off multiple species, and more will surely follow if we don’t do anything about it. From on a local level, like the state endangered barking treefrog in Maryland that I’m holding here, to tropical species like the brown egg frog from Amazonian Peru in the last pic, amphibians around the world are constantly exposed to these imposing threats, and they need our protection. Happy World Frog Day! World Frog Day is celebrated annually on March 20th. There are over 7,500 recognized species of frogs and toads, which together make the order Anura. All those species of frogs and toads account for 88% of known amphibian species. Why mention toads on World Frog Day? Toads are frogs too! People tend to call frogs that have a bumpy, dry appearance “toads,” but that amounts to a common naming device rather than a meaningful distinction in the way different species are related to one another. Anurans live all over the world, on every continent except for Antarctica. Adults are short-bodied and tailless. They can both breathe and drink through their permeable skins. Fossil evidence tells us they have existed for more than 200 million years. Anurans are broadly considered keystone species; important both for keeping ecosystems in balance by feeding on insects and small animals, and for indicating the health of that ecosystem, as their permeable skins can make them susceptible to pollution. Anurans have also been particularly vulnerable to the global spread of the deadly chytrid fungus, which has had scientists in research and conservation alike working hard to find ways to ensure that wild populations of frogs around the world survive and remain viable. HOJE E DIA DE FALAR DE SAPO NO MUNDO TODINHO!!! E no Dia Mundial dos SAPOS eu trago pra vocês a imagem desse bicho liiiiiiindo (se você não achou, olha ele de novo até achar 😅), chamado sapo-andarilho, espécie Macrogeoglottus alipioi. Esse bicho é quase um unicórnio dos sapos, encontrado na Mata Atlântica, apenas em ambientes florestais bem conservados devido à sua exigência por qualidade ambiental. O nome do bichinho faz jus a um hábito da espécie que é meio incomum entre os anfíbios anuros (sapos, pererecas e rãs): ele anda!!! Caminha delicadamente sobre o solo da floresta, se camuflando muito bem entre a serrapilheira, o que dificulta ainda mais seu encontro. Essa bolinha de fofura não está classificada entre as espécies ameaçadas de extinção mas, como a grande maioria das espécies de anfíbios, sofre pressão de extinção indireta por causa das mudanças climáticas, que tem potencial ainda mais agressivo contra esses animais tão sensíveis às mudanças ambientais. Encontrei esse camaradinha aí na floresta do @terraluminous_socioambiental durante o curso de fauna, e olhem, fiquei quase mais feliz que os alunos que estavam comigo na hora!!! Fiquei longos minutos incrédula, dizendo "meu deus, não acredito que achei esse bicho, não acredito, não acredito mesmo!"! Espécie naturalmente rara, linda e com características tão particulares é sempre um presente de encontrar! Obrigada, Mãe Natureza! This northern whistling frog (Austrochaperina gracilipes) was probably one of the least expected findings during my trip at Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) National Park. In other words, I didn’t really find this frog, it literally caught me by hopping in between my legs right in front of @greenhoose ! So far, I have only ever seen two Australian microhylid species, with the other species being Kutini boulder frog (Cophixalus kulakula), which will be featured in another post. I’d like to see more of these cute little brown frogs in the wild in future herping in both China and Australia-as mycrohylid is one of the very few anuran lineages that can be found in both countries.
