August 22, 2023 | Glacier National Park, Montana After parking Berry at our site at the Apgar Campground, Amy and I biked to the Apgar Village to get some pictures from the southern end of the Lake McDonald. We spent a short time on shore before a strong, but short lived storm rolled through. Luckily there was a lodge nearby where we could grab some drinks to wait out the storm. After it cleared, we had a beautiful rest of the evening. We got a few more pics of the lake and biked back to cook dinner.

Years before she passed, the Pink Phoenix Breast Cancer Survivor Dragon Boating Team competed at Lake McDonald. Traci fell in love with the mountains and landscape. One of our families favorite picture of her was from the shoreline in Apgar. Tim made sure we stood in the same place before flying home today. ⛰️ Sweet sister, I get it. Up before dawn to catch the sunrise at Lake McDonald, the “Rainbow Lake”. Look at those colors. Breathtaking. 🤩 You win some / You lose some.🤷 Lake McDonald is a glacially carved lake spanning 10 miles, with a depth of nearly five hundred feet. The jewel of West Glacier, it has been a popular destination since the park’s inception. It was once quite difficult to access, but with the construction of the Lake McDonald Lodge, and The Going To The Sun Road, it became one of @glaciernps premier destinations. It is known as the Rainbow Lake do to the abundance of multicolored pebbles that line it’s shore and lakebed. Week 1 of working as a Wrangler in GNP •when I left home in June, I was planning on finding a remote, online job to make money and traveling until I felt like coming home, but this job fell into my lap and everything aligned so perfectly, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity •working with horses again after going 7 years without it was something really special. To be able to live in a National park and do seasonal work is definitely something I highly recommend. 📍Apgar Village & Avalanche Lake, Glacier National Park 🏔️Day 1 in Glacier! Rented a motorized boat at Apgar Village to gain vehicle reservation into the park. Hiked to a glacier lake, Avalanche Lake trail. 🚗 TIP: vehicle reservations are required in the summer months. You can request online ahead of time *fully booked five months prior*, wait till 48 hours prior for release, visit before 6:00am or after 3:30pm- entrance granted, OR reserve a boat, kayak, canoe or boat tour for a day pass! It has to be done through an authorized supplier- in this case, Glacier Boat Company! They sent us a vehicle reservation 48 hours prior and it must be shown to enter the park! 🚤 The boat ride was lovely and super easy to drive. Zero experience needed with boats to take this around Lake McDonald. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable! We went across the entirety of the lake, 1 hour down and back. Our littlest even napped for half of the ride! 🙌 🥾 Avalanche Lake. Ended up being almost 5 miles with the additional Trail of the Cedars add on. We hiked with our 4.5 year old and 21 month old in pack! The trail starts on a boardwalk and follows a river that is still beautiful for those that don’t wish to hike to the alpine lake. It is rated moderate but the incline was gradual and there were few steep portions. Mostly shaded, which was ideal for afternoon hike! One more thing about Glacier National Park I almost forgot to share! Make sure to visit the Apgar Nature Center - where you can touch everything!! They have all kinds of pelts and bones, things to look at under magnifying glasses, and other hands-on activities. They also have daypacks with binoculars and extra activities you can check out for the day, and daily Ranger talks (kids need to attend a talk to earn their Junior Ranger badge at this park, and the one we saw here was great!) You can even turn in your Junior Ranger books in at this location and get a bit more attention from Rangers than in the main Visitor Center. Reminiscent of the fantastic day on Friday, August 8th! We started our #GlacierAdventures with the first hike to #AvalancheLake that morning, which we accessed via the #WestGlacier Entrance. We walked approximately two miles to #ApgarVillage, enjoying the extra steps (JK, parking, and traffic into the park was a nightmare). We took a shuttle from Apgar to the trailhead. It was a hot day, but the air quality did not bother us from the nearby fires. The hike was beautiful, with many shaded areas and a gradual incline. We were impressed by the fantastic views of #AvalancheLake, with its big mountainous surrounding and clear water. In the far view, there were two very visible and beautiful #waterfalls! It was pretty majestic. After the #hike, we soaked in the sun and took a refreshing dip at #LakeMcDonald, with its stunning natural backdrop. Nothing beats a sunset paddle at Lake McDonald, with 400 feet of crystal clear deep blue #lake and laughter with my buddies. We paddled two miles, enjoying the cool breeze and the beautiful scenery. Then hiked the final 2 miles to the car! It was a great day!!!
