Named one of Dance Magazine's “25 to Watch,” dancer, musician, and dance researcher Nic Gareiss (he/they) has been hailed by the New York Times for his “dexterous melding of Irish and Appalachian dance” and called “the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston Herald. They reimagine movement as a musical practice, recasting dance as a medium that appeals to both eyes and ears. Gareiss engages many percussive dance traditions, weaving together a dance technique facilitating his love of improvisation, traditional flatfoot, clog, and step dance footwork vocabulary, and musical collaboration. They have concertized in sixteen countries including at London's Barbican Centre, the Irish National Concert Hall, the Munich Philharmonic, and the Kennedy Center. In 2020, Nic received the Michigan Heritage Award, the state's highest distinction for traditional artists. #nicgareiss #dancemagazine #earfuloffiddlecamp #michiganartist #danceresearcher #percussivedance #irishdance #appalachiandance #musicalpractice #stepdancer #traditionalartists #traditionalmusic #traditionalarts #michiganheritageaward #MItradarts #danceperformance #improvisation #traditionalfootwork #flatfoot #localfolkicon #danceismusic

More fun stuff at our day fest in June - our singing workshop will be led by brilliant Canadian singer-songwriter @caraluft 🤩 A JUNO award winner and talented guitarist and banjo player, Cara is a renowned folk music artist in her home country of Canada and has built a fanbase around the world. Cara was a founder member of The Wailin’ Jennys and subsequently toured widely as a solo performer. From 2012 to 2023, Cara also toured and recorded with JD Edwards as @thesmallglories and the duo won Folk Alliance International’s Folk Artist of the Year Award in 2020. 🏆 Cara is an incredibly skilled singer and arranger of vocal harmonies and an experienced workshop leader. In Cara's own words: "Come experience the fun and unique qualities of singing with others in harmony and learn how to capture the essence of a song with your voice. We will explore listening techniques, how to recognize chordal relationships, how harmony fits into a melodic landscape, how to sing better lines while picking up some vocal techniques and exercises along the way. Join us for a fun and empowering experience! Everything is taught by ear and learned as a group." 🎶 We'll also have a step dance workshop and both workshops are included in the day ticket price, alongside our stellar performance line-up which features world class roots music artists from the USA, UK and Canada. As well as Cara, we'll have @jake.m.blount & his trio, @jaywalkers_band and @goldenshoals to entertain you! 🎻 See LINK IN BIO for tickets and lots more info about the artists and the event. I had a fantastic day dancing with @powderkeg_morris at Amounderness Day of Dance in Chorley. Great to see different styles, and variations on dances. We were lucky to get a sunny day amongst all of these rainy ones, too! Names of the groups are with the image descriptions. Unfortunately there were a few sides I didn't manage to catch. Please feel free to educate me about any names for kit etc that I might not know - I'm new to all of this! . . . Images: various folk dance groups dancing in different locations in Chorley town centre, in front of shops. 1. Powderkegs. They wear jackets with long tatters, strips of fabric in red, orange, yellow and black, over black shirts and trousers. They wear bell pads on their legs with short tatters, and black top hats decorated with different items including ribbons, flowers and feathers. Their faces are painted in different designs in the same colours as their jackets. They carry long sticks. Three dancers are in a line, turning to their right, and their tatters swirl around. Behind them three more dancers do the same, facing in the opposite direction. 2. Malkin. Two rows of dancers face each other, kicking one leg up. They wear black long sleeved tops, long skirts with a pattern of rectangles in red, orange and gold, and black clogs with bells on. They carry two sticks with red, white and blue tassels on the end, holding one up in the air while the other is pointed down. 3. Amounderness Ladies. They wear long bold purple pinafores with white ribbons falling from the waist, over white shirts and underskirts, with black clogs. They carry garlands, green u-shaped frames with strings of white and pale purple flowers wrapped around them. 4. Buttercross Belles. Most of the dancers wear long turquoise-green pinafores with two purple stripes around the bottom, over white shirts and underskirts, with black clogs. One wears a shorter black dress with flared skirt, and other wears a mossy green waistcoat with black shirt and trousers. They all wear straw hats, most of which are decorated with flowers. They dance in pairs, clasping their left hands together and raising their right hands by their heads. (Continued in comments)

Join Gina Dilg (@fiddlesmcgee) for a flatfoot dance workshop TOMORROW, Saturday, April 13th from 5:00-6:00pm, prior to the Old Time Dance with the Lovely Mountaineers at The Floyd Country Store. Cost is $15. Drop-ins welcome! https://handmademusicschool.com/event/flatfoot-dance-04-13-2024/ Dancing is a great way to participate in the mountain music tradition, and it’s easy and fun to learn! In this 60-minute session, we’ll learn how flatfooting and clogging is tied to Appalachian String Band music and go through the basic steps to get you comfortable on the dance floor. We’ll also go over how to mix these steps up and learn how to pick up moves on the fly, developing your own personal style. In addition to flatfoot basics, we’ll also go over two-step partner dance for slow songs. Come in comfortable shoes, leather or smooth-soled shoes are best, but anything that doesn’t grip the floor too much works great. Stay for the old time dance with the Lovely Mountaineers at 7:00pm and try out your new moves! #handmademusic #appalachiandance #flatfooting #workshop #visitfloydva

Dissident Rhythms #2, in Brasstown, North Carolina was a waking reverie in motion, sound, connectivity, and conviviality. I’m still learning what my relationship to this gathering of fellow 2SLGBTQIA+ percussive dancers is - but dancer, dance writer, and beloved friend Juniper Viernes called it a point of queer contact, which feels eloquent and encompassing. Contact was indeed made: with the floor, with *the music*, with each other. Swelling solidarity of shared words, each footfall a tactile textural feast. Our eldest attendee was 71, our youngest dancer was eighteen. It feels really good to put queer people who have survived two plagues in the same room with queer people who are still trying to survive one … and to figure out how to seek pleasure in rhythm, care, and coalition. THANK YOU to everyone who donated to help make this happen. Thank you to @johnccampbellfolkschool for having us, especially to @tclawgrizz and @squirrelbuttery. Immense gratitude to @quickquick.lolo for taking on the task of feeding us and for your impeccable kitchen and dance party playlists. And special thanks to my co-organizer, co-founder and the originator of the idea for a queer percussive dance gathering, Mo Brachfeld (@fiddle_and_feet). 1. We had an amazing group of dancers at the first Jamboree Flatfooting Workshop a few weeks ago. Come for the next one, this Friday, October 20th! https://handmademusicschool.com/event/jamboree-flatfooting-workshop-october-20th-2023-2/ This free workshop is taught by Sophie Moeckel and held on the dance floor of The Floyd Country Store from 5:45-6:15 PM, on Friday, October 20th, 2023. Following a brief history of Appalachian percussive dance traditions and a demonstration, we’ll dive into the basics of flatfooting and clogging steps to get you out on the dance floor and try some fun variations on those steps. This workshop is especially for beginners but will be taught to the experience level of the group, all are welcome! Come ready to dance and stay for the Jamboree to practice your new moves. What a weekend at @saltburnfolkfestival! Thank you to the amazing audience at the Saturday night concert, I’m still buzzing! And big thanks to John Fermer for joining me on fiddle, and to Jim and Becky for doing such a fab job on sound. Was also a real privilege to sign a gorgeous homemade banjo for audience member Rory! 🪕 As well as the Banjo Jen set, I also played 4 times with Feet First Appalachian Dance Team which is always so much fun and we love this festival so much. It’s just the most fantastic setting with such beautiful seascapes and skies …and a fabulous rainbow appeared this year just as I was getting ready for my show 😍. I really don’t want to leave 😭. Massive thanks to Elinor for having me play, and to all the festival team and volunteers who’ve worked so hard over the weekend to put on such a lovely festival 💞 . . . #saltburn #saltburnfolkfestival #folkfestival #folkmusic #americanamusic #originalmusic #singersongwriter #womeninmusic #livemusic #banjo #fiddle #appalachiandance #feetfirst

First of all, I know I spelled ‘Appalachian’ wrong and I’m not going to fix it. Second of all, not all clogging dances are set to bluegrass or country music. But when it is, you better believe we swing our petticoats faster. 💃🏻 • • • In all seriousness, clogging was traditionally set to bluegrass tunes. Since clogging is a high-energy style of dance, we can actually dance to any upbeat genre of music. Personally, I like dancing to pop music. But sometimes a sick bluegrass lick really gets my foot tapping. • • • Follow for more unsolicited dance posts! • • • #clogging #clog #clogdance #appalachianclogging #appalachiandance #folk #folkdance #bluegrass

There’s a big focus on giving this month, and I always love to try and find ways to give back in my business! While I can’t travel to every classroom that needs a dance teacher, I’ve come up with some amazing online resources. * So, I am looking for 3 dedicated teachers who would like to incorporate Appalachian Dance into their classrooms using my online Appalachian Flatfooting & Clogging Academy. I’m providing this access completely free to a small number of teachers, and I’m looking for folks who’d love to offer more dance but don’t have access to instructors or funds in their area. So please help me spread the word, and tag a teacher you think would be a good fit in the comments below! * #kentucky #kentuckywoman #folkdance #traditionaldance #appalachianflatfooting #flatfooting #clogging #appalachia #appalachian #traditionalmusic #stepdance #buckdance #appalachiandance #cornbread #songwriter #songwriters #mountainmusic #kentuckyproud #kentuckydance #kentuckywomen #folkways #folklife #folkdancers #tradfolk #oldtimemusic #oldtimedance #teachingdance #artsineducation

Isn’t it amazing how many self-styled experts there are on the internet? Some of the comments I get when I post about the traditions I grew up with are downright silly, so I made this silly meme in response, because laughter is the best medicine. * And, for the record, I’d like to clear up a few misconceptions by some of the recent commenters (hillbillysplainers?) on my dance and music videos. -Yes, you CAN be from Appalachia and have green hair, piercings, or just generally NOT wear calico. -Yes, I DO consider myself a flatfooter even though I choose to do shuffles sometimes. -No, clogging and flatfooting are not just offshoots of PURELY European dance styles. There are so many African and likely indigenous influences and it’s time to quit whitewashing our history. * If you want to hop on the dance train with me, visit the link in my bio to get your free dance video and join my Appalachian Flatfooting & Clogging Facebook Group! * * * #kentucky #kentuckywoman #folkdance #traditionaldance #appalachianflatfooting #flatfooting #clogging #appalachia #appalachian #traditionalmusic #stepdance #slowliving #appalachiandance #mountainmusic #kentuckyproud #kentuckydance #leathersoles #folkways #folklife #womenoffolk #tradfolk #oldtimemusic #stopwhitewashing #culturalheritage #whitewashing #multicultural

The Green Grass Cloggers at last week's Global Roots of Appalachian Mountain Dance Symposium, hosted by @appstudies_asu . . The Green Grass Cloggers were founded in 1971 by Dudley Culp and fellow students at Eastern Carolina University. Although the group was often barred from clogging contests for not adhering to approved figures and styles, they attracted the support of old-timers like fiddler Tommy Jarrell and flatfoot dancer Willard Watson, who felt that the group's free-wheeling style was true to the spirit of Appalachian dance before the influence of competition standards. Dudley Culp passed away in 2021 during the Green Grass Cloggers' 50th anniversary year, but the group continues on with members from both Asheville and Greenville, NC. . #ncfolklife #appalachiandance #clogging #ncartsfunded #traditionaldance

The Raven Rock Dancers at last week's Global Roots of Appalachian Mountain Dance Symposium, hosted by @appstudies_asu and funded in part by a grant from the @ncartscouncil . . In the 1980s, Walker Calhoun formed the Raven Rock Dancers with his 30 grandchildren, a family dance group who performed and taught ceremonial and social dances. The Calhoun family was especially vital to the resurgence of the stomp dance as a part of Cherokee spiritual practices. Though Walker Calhoun passed away in 2012, at the age of 93, his family carries on their dance traditions.

Introducing our new podcast, From the Mic, with host Mary Wesley! In the debut episode of From the Mic, we meet Phil Jamison, of Asheville, NC. Phil is nationally-known as a dance caller, old-time musician, and flatfoot dancer. In their conversation Phil and Mary talk about Phil’s roots in the old time music scene, how he first stepped up to the mic as a caller, and his philosophy and approach to leading dances. They delve into his research about the history of dance calling in southern Appalachia and compare the ins-and-outs of square dance calling and contra dance calling. Phil also shares some incredible historic recordings of dance callers and some tracks from his own musical collaborations. Enjoy! Listen at fromthemic.cdss.org or wherever you get podcasts. What are you waiting for? Do you need an engraved invitation? Would you feel ready if you had a personal assistant, extra time in the day, or thousands of dollars? You’re not alone. I’ve made excuses, too! ⭐️ For years, I wanted to make instructional videos in Appalachian Flatfooting & Clogging, but it was so expensive to hire a videographer! ⭐️ And even now, I still don’t *really* know what I’m doing with all this recording and editing! But I decided during the pandemic that me and my iphone could make perfectly GOOD ENOUGH videos so that I could share what I love with the world, and it feels fantastic. Tell me something you’re starting... ready or not! ⭐️ This video features Kentucky Treasure Cari Norris playing Hawk Got the Chicken and Gone, a tune she learned from her beloved grandmother, Lily May Ledford! ⭐️ #kentucky #kentuckywoman #folkdance #traditionaldance #appalachianflatfooting #flatfooting #clogging #traditionalmusic #appalachiandance #kentuckymusic #folkfemale #kentuckydance #kentuckywomen #percussivedance #appalachia #improvdance #folkways #folklife #womenoffolk #tradfolk #oldtimemusic #musicianlife #oldtimefiddle #lilymayledford #oldtimebanjo #clawhammer #appalachianstories #clawhammerbanjo #kentuckyproud #onlyinkentucky
