A new form of contemporary dance in the water called Aquatic Contact Improvisation (ACI) can contain many different states, aspects and patterns. It was inspired by Contact Improvisation Dance, founded by Steve Paxton in 1980 in California. Joy! At our final class in our 7 week series Making Contact with @somatikha we had a dance jam. We’re focusing on Expressive Dance now. So instead of teaching much form to make contact more available to our bodies, we’re working with presence to express what is alive in the moment. Whatever is available can thus be accessed more easily. Contact is dynamic in a different way. I’m enjoying the tension between what I’m feeling and desiring and who I’m connecting to, what I’m sensing in them and being sensitive. There’s no right or wrong. There are endless choices. Somatic Contact is following your ease. Expressive dance is following the waves of emotion in your dance too and this too leads to bliss. It’s in the present. Even though I didn’t teach Chris forms in contact - finding shelves, we had a great contact. It was a spontaneous moment of spectating in our jam. Dance can be an emotional rollercoaster! I’ve lived it too!! 😅 One year you might feel on top of the world, completely in sync. And the next? Feeling like you can’t connect to your body, your partner or your dance. You are not alone. It happens to almost every partner dancer I know, regardless of their level. Most recently for myself, I felt this way when I came back to dance after having my babies. 🙅♀️ But you’re not a bad dancer. 🙅♀️ You’re not the reason why you can’t achieve your goals or dreams. What can we say, Stardust Weekend in the books!!! What a treat it has been. Often times you go through things that bring you back to where it all started. I started in Ballroom over 20 years ago at an Arthur Murray Dance Studio where you saw nothing but joy on people’s faces where we all social danced to a Waltz, or a Chacha, or a Samba, or Foxtrot. No judgements, no clicks, just a joy and a love. And it brings you back home and it’s a humbling and sweet feeling. On behalf of Taryn and myself it was truly an honor and a privilege. On one of the private lessons we taught afterward this woman cried on how thankful she was and how happy she was. You can’t describe how much that means to touch someone in that way. This was just one of the many moments we will never forget. The friends we made, dancing with you all. Thank you for your love, warmth, and your kindness.
