Per ardua ad astra ... Through adversity to the stars, or so they say. It's been on my mind the last few days. Thjngs happen that test your resolve. I guess the measure is how you deal with getting out of the hole. I dropped into @heathvalewines today to taste some ferments. Afterwards Trev and Faye pulled the cork on this beauty. Spring of 2021 there was a massive hailstorm and pretty much wiped out the whole vineyard. Trev pruned the vines early with the aim of having decent canes for 2023. We got a tiny second crop of Shiraz that popped out. We walked through and thought we could probably do something with this. It's funny how the vines compensated and ended up ripening the grapes not much later than usual. Picked at 13.4 baume with really nice natural acidity, we were kinda shocked how good it looks through ferment. Maturation in some older French barriques, for about 20 months and put to bottle. Looks great, although we drank it a bit early. Lots of dark berry and chocolate aromas and flavours. Fleshy supple mouth filling tannins. Oak is slightly dominant at this time, but the fruit will push through as it does sitting in the glass. It was a great drink with great people. J guess you just gotta keep pushing through and not give up when it gets hard. #shiraz #heathvalewines #edenvalley #barossa #redwine #wine

The White Shiraz was an experiment. See we had a problem: - Each year we found ourselves selling out of our Hill Block Riesling, our only dry white. Our Hill Block Riesling had been awarded 95 points with Winestate Magazine and was selling out rapidly. - We have a little cafe called Monkey Nut Cafe which serves the most delicious Salt and Pepper Squid (if you know you know) and for the busiest 6 months of the year we could offer no Dry White wine accompaniment, which was just crazy! So Bronson came up with a solution. The Shepard Vuk White Shiraz. When he pitched the idea to Mum and Dad, they were thrilled and asked about the flavour profile. Bronson explained that he wasn't sure, but he reassured them that if the wine was not up to our high standards he would not release it. It's fair to say the pressure was on! 🤣 Well as we stand today: ~ The first vintage (2023) has now completely sold out ~ 6,600 bottles were sold through our Cellar Door, Wine Club and our handful of restaurant partners (Thank you all so much 🙌) in its first 10 months! ~ As it stands today we have a wait list in our cellar door for people to call when we release the new vintage A great success you would say! I love this quote by Jim Rohn - "If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary." WHITE SHIRAZ 2.0 Well one vintage on and Bronson has improved the winemaking technique even further. The wine is now in full production and a permanent fixture on our wine list going forward! Victim Mentality. From the outside looking in, someone with a victim mentality can be very frustrating and, at times, draining to be around. Especially if they seem to be stuck in a perpetual cycle, like a loop that just goes round and round with the same old things. While a bit exasperating, it can help to remember that someone with a victim mentality mindset didn’t just decide to have this belief system and that it is actually fuelled through real trauma and significant stress. But nobody can blame you for thinking they choose to stay in the loop of negativity. Often they feel immobilised and unable to change. They perceive life as happening to them and mostly always in a negative way. They feel that there is no point in trying to change anything because it won’t make any difference. How can you help? Empathy and validation are the foundation of helping someone change their perspective, but with boundaries. Remind them of the positive things in their life, highlight their good qualities and take into consideration where they are coming from. Kindness and encouragement won’t immediately provide a jolt to the soul, but small efforts will be seen, appreciated, and heard. It’s 1981, and a fit middle aged man with a neatly kept full beard, curly dark hair and glasses stands at the front of the class, preparing to address his first ever cohort of design students. “I’m Mr McLauchlan,” he announces, only to be met with a furrow of brows as the teens size up this eccentric newcomer with his non-Germanic name. Sensing their collective confusion, the man is quick to respond. “Call me Mr Mac,” he says with a smile. The Angaston Chefs Collective Part 2 The menus presented by Emily Thomas and Clare Falzon at Otherness through April brought many sighs of contentment from our discerning customers. The seasons are now shifting gear; the first nips of winter are beginning to chill our Angaston mornings and the smell of woodsmoke taints the evening air. Checked on the house expecting nothing but the skylight has been installed, the man hole boxed up & all the holes cut for the electricity & wires pulled through. Site supervisor says we can still be done by the end of May so fingers crossed, still alot of little things to be done.
