Today, when you get some classical sheet music you are not familiar with, you can usually find many recordings of the piece performed by some of the greatest pianists of the last several decades. You cannot help but to be influenced by these recordings, since they are result of the cumulative influences of 100+ years of pianists playing the same pieces. In the 1800s, broadcast radio (and the internet) did not yet exist. When a new piano song came out, you had figure out for yourself how it was supposed to go with only the sheet music. 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF FANCY FREE! On this day in 1944, “Fancy Free,” the first work in the historic collaboration between Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins, had its legendary premiere at the (old) Metropolitan Opera House. Commissioned by @abtofficial, “Fancy Free” featured Robbins as one of the three sailors and was conducted by Bernstein, himself. Both Bernstein and Robbins were 25 years old.
