This is the landscape that taught me to see the incredible complexity amd beauty in creation, right in my back yard!. A high school biology teacher, Mike Hanlon, loved the creation and the creator so much that he took wayward students required to take summer school to the best school ever - outdoors! We learned about Joshua Trees, Junipers, Mormon Tea, Creosote Bush and a few dozen other species and we learned how fragile this high desert habitat is. Nearly 50 years later, the few remaining Joshua Trees have to be sought out, and sprawl has wiped the ground clean of most significant habitat. So, hypothetically of course….imagine you are riding down a winding and windy mountain road. It is pitch black with rain blowing sideways. You come around a tight bend and immediately meet a recent rock slide. The sound and feel of crunching undercarriage caused by a 24” boulder meeting your car’s 12” of road clearance is terrifying. But the driver skillfully finds a place to pull over, and you come to a safe stop. You check in with the other 4 occupants and everyone is OK, but the steam coming from the engine bay says that particular radiator has given up the ghost. You get ready to call for help when you try to wrap your head around the question: “where are we?” At that point, what could be the most beautiful thing you could possibly see? Maybe a sign 20’ away from you that explodes in brilliance when your flashlight hits it. Yep, that will do for beauty today! #beautyforthisday
