Two of my absolute favorite PNW breweries [(Great Notion 📍Portland, Oregon & Pfriem 📍Hood River, Oregon) both previously featured on the page] collaborated to make this ever crispy, fresh, and delicious West Coast Pilsner called “Twins”(5.8% ABV). A west coast Pilsner is distinctly different than a regular old Pilsner….why? Because HOPS baby. Wayyyyy more hops. On the west coast, we like to throw a lot of hops in our beer. Often times, hops such as Citra, Mosaic, Galaxy, or Nelson. Typical hops you may find in an IPA, you will find in this beer. But don’t worry, these two breweries know exactly what they’re doing and wouldn’t craft a palate destroyingly hoppy pilsner. This is a well balanced, dry hopped beer. ADD HOOD RIVER TO THE LIST: This beauty of an Oregon town like so many others since Covid has been invaded by wealthy Californians. A studio rents for $2000. There’s no sales tax but the progressive income tax runs up to 9.9 percent — including retirement income. The funkiness and dive bars are on the wane, replaced by slick galleries and craft beer. It’s still a wonderful place to spend my non hiking day. After a few hours in the library, I went to the 301 Gallery (an artist run space), Trillian Cafe (great burgers), The Ruins (cool event center), the Columbia riverfront (super active with windsurfing / parasailing) and pFriem (awesome brewery), with an e-bike taxi to finish the day. My reward? The big Breaking News from last night was @pfriembeer's announced plans to open a second location in downtown Milwaukie, occupying the town's recently vacated City Hall. The long awaited and often rumoured location is scheduled to open in April of 2025 and will feature three bars including a Bear's Den-like space, draft craft cocktails, over 20 beer taps, varied urban & international cuisine, and potentially incorporate some components of the former firehouse space. The building will also feature the Woodstock-based @keepercoffeeco as well as house a community focused non-profit in the second floor office space. The appeal of the location in addition to its proximity to the Willamette River and public transportation is its large surrounding green space and sculpture garden to further their continued mission of providing a family friendly venue that's more community than tourism focused. This is the next phase of how pFriem will continue to grow without expanding beyond their current distribution footprint and provide a long sought after location to satisfy the rarely slaked thirst of Portland 🍻
From the beginning of what might be my 6th or 7th tour of @pfriembeer's Hood River facility yesterday, it quickly became obvious how big the brewery has become... 90bbl fermenters swapped for 150bbl fermenters, the addition of a five vessel 50HL brewhouse, and a canning line cranking out an average of 140 cans per minute all add up to a brewery on the verge of producing 45,000 barrels in 2024. After a delightful Mid West IPA with charcuterie, their Vienna matched with a blurry herb roasted chicken & spätzle, plus Frambozen paired with a trio of Creme Brûlée (Frangelico, Gran Marnier, Chambord), another surprise was still yet to come... 🍻
Yesterday @pfriembeer invited the local beer media out to their home in the Columbia River Gorge for the first time in four years. We began early with a tour of their Cascade Locks Warehouse, Barrel & Blending Facility. What was four years ago a shell of an unfinished structure has already grown even larger to handle the 10% annual growth the brewery still enjoys in the PNW. Throughout the tour we were met by three delicious beer pairings: Pilsner and @cascadiacreamery Cloud Cap on a spent grain cracker Druif Blanc Lambic-inspired Wheat Ale with Riesling Grapes and Hammersley Inlet Oysters. Amaro BA Barleywine with apple donuts and lemon & lambic curd. This only constituted the first hour of our visit, with the remainder spent 20 minutes east at their original Hood River location 🍻

You'll join pFriem R&D Brewer and Lead Blender, Kyle Krause, as well as folks from the Brews for New Avenues team in creating a barrel-aged collaboration for the 2024 event! pFriem is brewing up an 11% Oatmeal Stout, and you'll help select the barrel for aging and the adjuncts. 🗾Japanese Lager🇯🇵 Hailing from Hood River, Oregon, Pfriem is one of the most revered breweries in the PNW. This Japanese Lager is part of a set of Lagers Pfriem produced including one from Canada 🇨🇦, Czechia 🇨🇿 as well as Mexico 🇲🇽. This beer is superrrr clean. Absolutely delicious. It smells like a bouquet of flowers. Aromas of Shiso Plum, fresh bread, sparkling notes of jasmine rice and green tea. It’s so crisp. So refreshing. Very floral and botanical, you can certainly taste the rice in this brew. Very sudsy head, with an extremely light yellow in color. Almost translucent really.
