I’m an avid gardener, and nothing brings me more joy or hope than seeing seeds grow, and passing along my knowledge to my little one. I also think of the metaphorical seeds that I plant every day while raising my child. Here is my submission for #PrinterSolstice week 6 (prompt: Blood, Sweat, and Tears). During the lockdown of Spring 2020, we got my then-3-year-old a pedal bike. They had been rocking the balance bike for a couple of years at that point, and we found this awesome red bike on Craigslist for like $10. This kid caught on to riding a bike so quick, starting and stopping and zooming around. Once the braking and stopping and getting on and off by themself was mastered, we found a matching red basket to put on the bike. That way, stuffed animal friends could come along on rides too. There wasn’t *too* much blood (though there were a few crashes and scraped elbows) and there weren’t many tears, but there were definitely some sweaty humid summer rides. And when I thought of this week’s prompt, I thought of determination, and this was what came to mind for me. The determination of mastering a complicated new skill, and reveling in the delight of it. I initially sketched this last summer in procreate, but I updated the sketch this week for carving. Here is my submission for #PrinterSolstice Week 2 prompt, “A New Hope”. There is nothing more hopeful to me than the hope contained in seeds. And to share that knowledge of growing things with my own kid has been an utter delight, from the first time we brought him into the garden when he was just a few days old. This drawing was made from a photograph I took in May, of my child holding the sunflower seeds we were about to plant, and my hand holding his hand. I carved the design into a soft rubber block and printed with @speedball_art block printing ink. Often when I’m going through a stressful situation, I have to just break things down bit by bit to make it through. When my child was an infant, my partner and I had sticky notes all over our house (“one feeding at a time”, “one diaper at a time”, etc). They still need to be signed and numbered, but here is my finished submission for the @theporterhaus_printexchange . 5x7 linocut on 8x10 paper, edition of 20. The theme is “intersections”, which I felt was hugely applicable for life in general, but especially right now, in a pandemic and an election year. I had lots of ideas for this theme, but this is what I landed on. The intersection of a global pandemic (which has been politicized so as to even further divide an already polarized country) with an election process which is being undermined more and more. . Voting is a RIGHT, but it’s not inherently a right for every person, and some groups had to fight long and hard to be allowed to vote, so it’s also a PRIVILEGE. . Voting is POWER - even though the electoral college system is skewed and badly needs to be changed, it is still such an important and powerful way to make our voices heard. It is a RESPONSIBILITY, which we must take seriously if we want to turn our country around. Four more years of trump will only harm more people, since he would become even more emboldened in his white supremacist, misogynistic, xenophobic agenda. No, Biden wasn’t my first choice in the primary, but I’m going to do what I can to get him elected, because he’s the best chance we’ve got to re-unite the United States of America, and lead us back into the 21st century. . 🗳 Make a plan to vote. Day 95/100, documenting delight, 8/06/2020. The delight of getting together with friends, exploring in the woods, and finding surprises. Thanks to some sharp eyes, we spotted not one but TWO turtles at different spots along the trail. This was also a delightful exercise in different personalities. The first turtle immediately sealed itself up and wouldn’t open up for anything. The second one was “running” unflinchingly, as fast as it could. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) we did not find a “fighting” turtle, but it was a great display of fight/flight/freeze. It’s been a while since I posted here. I’ve been unsure of what to say...not wanting to seem performative, and not pretending that I have any answers. BUT... goddamn it, Black people are still being killed by the police even in the midst of these unprecedented protests. I don’t want to be seen as silent in this. I created this image in some word art app and it has been my profile pic on Facebook since shortly after trump was inaugurated. The message is just as important as ever, maybe even more so now. . I’m not brand new to antiracist work, but at the same time I AM new, as I believe all white people always have more to learn, more to unlearn, and more to open our eyes to. While I seek new ways to listen and learn and figure out how to be in this fight, I was also reminded that joy and delight are also important in the midst of suffering and revolution. . The other night I read an essay titled ”Joy Is Such a Human Madness“, from Ross Gay’s “Book of Delights” and was struck by his musings about what is joy. “What if we joined our sorrows, I’m saying. I’m saying: What if that is joy?” . . And so, I aim to start posting my 100-Day Project on delight again soon. I have been keeping up with it, but I haven’t been posting because it just felt weird. But I’ve had a few reminders recently that...there are always little glimmers of beauty and delight to be found, even in the midst of difficulty.

I am diving into a 100 Day Project. I’ve never done one before, nor have I had much interest in doing one. But, I am going to spend the next 100 days documenting DELIGHT. Truly, I have already been paying more attention and documenting some of my moments of delight, over the past couple of weeks. . . A few weeks back, just after Easter, I heard an @onbeing podcast with Ross Gay, who wrote an essay each day for a year, now published as “The Book of Delights”. . . This sparked a remembrance of Mary Oliver’s poem titled “Mindful”, which says, “every day I see or I hear something that more or less kills me with delight.” I have always loved that line ever since I heard it many years ago. . . And then one day last week, @elizabeth_gilbert_writer made an Instagram post about this very same thing. And that pretty much confirmed it for me. . . And I’ve just kept thinking about it. About delight. About noticing little, delightful things. . . With stay-at-home orders and social distancing during the COVID-19 Pandemic, life is going at a slower pace than usual. I’ve been sketching in the evenings, about something from the day that delighted me. I want to keep doing this. I want to do it every day. So...I am going to do a 100 Day Project. I probably won’t post here every single day, but I will do one every day and just post here from time to time. . . So, here it is. . . I’ve been working on some different projects over here this past week. I pulled my sewing machine out of the attic crawl space the other day, and sewed up a few masks for myself and my family. Then I had a few friends ask about it, so I made a bunch more. I’m glad I’ve kept my boxes of fabric scraps, etc., and am grateful for my hand-me-down sewing machine (which has sat unused for a few years), and for the semi-forced sewing projects my mom made me learn when I was growing up. I didn’t know I could still sew, but thanks to the straightforward instructions from @made_everyday , these were a lot easier than they look! I haven’t been doing any printmaking lately, or much creating at all really. Though I have been exploring some visual journaling through some Skillshare classes over the past few weeks, and am eager to try to get back into some kind of daily creating practice. Today, I remembered that my coworker @letterpress_mechanic gave my 3-year-old some sheets of sticker stock a long time ago. So, I drew a few doodles, and let him choose the ones he liked, then drew them onto the sticker stock and let him paint the images. It was a fun collaboration. I made a new little carving in honor of my favorite type of leaf (a ginkgo), to recognize the Autumnal Equinox. The days are definitely getting shorter, and although I love the autumn, it’s always somewhat bittersweet because it means winter is right around the corner, and honestly, winter is not my favorite.
