Vernissage 'Drawing with Steel' soloshow Robert Schad 08.03.2024 - 19:00 In 2021 nam ik naar aanleiding van de honderdste verjaardag van Joseph Beuys een podcast op met de Gentse kunstenaar Ronny Delrue over het vrije tekenen. Het ging er ondermeer om dat het systematisch inzetten van intuïtie kan leiden tot nieuwe denkstructuren die een directe link leggen tussen geheugen en handeling. Dat gesprek heeft mij geïnspireerd om het werk van Robert Schad vanuit dat oogpunt diepgaander te onderzoeken. Niet toevallig had Robert Schad in datzelfde jaar een grote tentoonstelling bij Schloss Moyland waar de grootste collectie met werk van Beuys wordt bewaard. De conclusie van mijn zoektocht was bijna meteen duidelijk: de kracht van het werk zit in de vrijheid die de kunstenaar zich permitteert bij het ontstaan ervan. Het is het vrije tekenen, het tekenen in de ruimte, tekenen met staal. EN/ In 2021, on the occasion of Joseph Beuys' centenary, I recorded a podcast with Ghent artist Ronny Delrue about free drawing. One of the topics was that the systematic deployment of intuition can lead to new thinking structures that establish a direct link between memory and action. That conversation inspired me to explore Robert Schad's work more deeply from that point of view. Not coincidentally, that same year Robert Schad had a major exhibition at Schloss Moyland where the largest collection of work by Beuys is kept. The conclusion of my search was almost immediately clear: the power of the work lies in the freedom the artist allows himself in creating it. Joseph Beuys Cafe, Melbourne is delighted to announce that Robyne Latham has joined the Joseph Beuys Cafe as an Advisor. Robyne is a proud Yamatji/Caucasian woman from Western Australia who has lived and worked in Melbourne for the past thirty-five years. Her career traverses two distinct yet interwoven paths, her art practice and her work in the university sector. Robyne’s art practice is informed by her First Nation heritage and spans sculptural ceramics, bronzes, set design for theatre, performance and ephemeral installation works. Primarily her works address the tension between the sacred and the secular, within the context of the human condition. It was during her undergraduate degree at Curtin University that she was introduced to the works of Joseph Beuys. In her own words: ‘Time stood still when I was introduced to Beuys’s performance artwork, ‘I Like America and America Likes Me’ (1974). Viewing the black and white photographs of the cloaked Mr Beuys, cane in hand, with the wild coyote stalking the gallery space was inspirational. The work spoke of something primal yet contemporary. Wer schon mal in Kassel war, dem sind bestimmt auch die zahlreichen Bäume aufgefallen, neben denen ein großer Steinblock steht. Insgesamt gibt es knapp 7000 davon in der ganzen documenta-Stadt verteilt. Sie sind das Resultat und Teil eines riesigen, weiterhin wachsenden Kunstprojektes von Joseph Beuys. Als er 1982 zur documenta 7 einen großen Haufen aus Basalt-Stelen vor dem Fridericianum ankarrte, war der Unmut der Bevölkerung enorm. Sein Ziel: binnen fünf Jahre jeden einzelnen Stein in der Stadt zu platzieren und daneben einen Baum zu setzen. Einzelhandel und Bürger waren besorgt um die Verdrängung von Parkplätzen. Anwohner wollten kein Laub und kein Vogeldreck. Man machte sich Gedanken um die Verkehrssicherheit und die Verwaltungsarbeit - letzteres wurde durch das Motto der Aktion "Stadtverwaldung statt Stadtverwaltung" weiter angeheizt. Selbst in der Kunstszene war man sich genau wie in der Politik uneins. Es war ein Hauptaspekt dieses Projekts - wie von jeder Beuys-Kunst - Autoritäten herauszufordern. Und zur Finanzierung wurde Beuys äußerst kreativ ... Am 23. Januar 1986 starb Joseph Beuys. Knapp ein Jahr später pflanzten seine Frau und sein Sohn zur Eröffnung der documenta 8 auf dem Friedrichsplatz die Eiche Nummer 7000 neben der ersten. Und 40 Jahre später steht das gesamte organisch-anorganische Kunstwerk unter Denkmalschutz. Was ursprünglich ein höchst umstrittenes Pilotprojekt war, ist heute aus künstlerischer, sozialer und ökologischer Sicht aktueller denn je. Andere Städte wie Chicago wurden inzwischen zu vergleichbaren Pflanzaktionen inspiriert. Der 100. Geburtstag von Beuys im Jahre 2021 wurde zum Anlass genommen, die Pflanzungen bayernweit voranzutreiben und weitere Basalt-Stelen zu gewinnen. Sabato 14 maggio alle 18:30 vi aspettiamo alla presentazione del catalogo della mostra temporanea “Joseph Beuys. Difesa della natura | Facciamo presto!” inaugurata all’ @imagomuseum (in Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, 270) a fine 2021, anno del centenario dalla nascita dell’artista d’azione e performer tedesco, tra i protagonisti assoluti dell’arte del secondo dopoguerra. La hall del museo accoglierà il pubblico presente e gli autori dei testi che interverranno per presentare il personale racconto della mostra temporanea, offrendo ai visitatori l’esperienza di cogliere il lavoro profetico e lungimirante di Joseph Beuys, allestito con un’originale narrazione fotografica come mai fatto prima. Un progetto espositivo, composto da circa 230 immagini, che si propone non soltanto di celebrare Joseph Beuys, ma anche di rappresentare quella che di fatto è una narrazione collettiva, rituale e necessaria, tanto antica quanto pionieristica dell'artista e performer Beuys. Auf den Spuren von Joseph Beuys - Spielerisch konnten sich die Studierenden mit Beuys' Leben und Wirken befassen und erste Ideen entwickeln, wie man eine Stadtrallye durch die Düsseldorfer Altstadt für Schüler und Schülerinnen der 5. und 6. Klasse gestalten könnte. Die Idee wuchs letztlich heran zu einem konkreten Projekt, welches nun kommenden Donnerstag - an Beuys' Geburtstag - das erste Mal mit Schüler:innen der Joseph Beuys Gesamtschule durchgeführt wird. Old and new life Laurence Petrone - Academy Open Air 2022 - "J'accuse" Bart Van Dijck - "100 oaks", 2021 According to the current "Tree Patrimony Management Plan for Campus Mutsaard," eight trees from the historic academy garden will be felled. Laurence Petrone sat down with the tree manager who drafted the plan. Unfortunately, there appears to be no alternative and the trees will be felled. For this edition of Academy Open Air, she proposed that one of the trees that was felled on the north side rest in full length in front of the temple building on the cobblestones in a sawn-up state, as if it had fallen like that. It is a sad but monumental image that also carries a critique towards the city's tree management. At the end of the fallen tree, a very young oak tree has been growing for several months. It is part of Bart Van Dijck's 100 Oaks project, which was started on the 100th birthday of Joseph Beuys. The oak trees that the artist grew and distributed in the OpenCage on Falcon Square just in front of Coppejan's Gallery were all given a destination. So now one of them is growing up in the garden of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Academy Open Air runs from May 5 until June 10 at the Campus in the Mustaardstraat. Oud en nieuw leven Laurence Petrone – Academy Open Air 2022 – "J’accuse" Bart Van Dijck - "100 oaks", 2021 Volgens het huidige ‘Beheersplan bomenpatrimonium Campus Mutsaard’ zullen acht bomen uit onze historische academietuin geveld worden. Laurence Petrone ging in gesprek met de boombeheerder die het plan heeft opgesteld. Helaas blijkt er geen alternatief te zijn en zullen de bomen geveld worden. Voor deze editie van Academy Open Air stelde ze voor één van de bomen die aan de noordzijde geveld werd in volledige lengte voor het tempelgebouw op de kasseien te laten rusten in verzaagde staat, alsof hij zo gevallen is. Het is een treurig, maar monumentaal beeld dat ook een kritiek in zich draagt tegenover het bomenbeheer in de stad. Aan het einde van de gevallen boom groeit al enkele maanden een piepjonge eik die deel uit maakt van het 100 eiken project van Bart Van Dijck dat van start ging op de honderdste verjaardag van Joseph Beuys. De eikjes die de kunstenaar opkweekte en uitdeelde in de OpenCage op het Falconplein vlak voor Coppejans Gallery, kregen allemaal een bestemming. Eén ervan groeit nu dus op in de tuin van de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen. Academy Open Air loopt vanaf 5 mei tot en met 10 juni op de Campus in de Mustaardstraat. One year ago I visited Ronny Delrue's studio to record one of the first BeuysCasts. I was very well received and I have had a very pleasant and open contact with Ronny ever since. His work is intuitive, charged and thoughtful. Soon Nico Dockx, Johan Pas and I will present a new publication with the title: Beuys101. A report of a very active Beuys year. Ronny also made an enchanting contribution for the publication, based on a fragment of a Lothar Wolleh picture. The publication will be presented during the Antwerp Art Weekend.
