“Just your classic American millennial love story. We met in a bar. As co-workers, not as patrons. I (Geena) had just been bitten by the travel bug and spent the summer in Thailand and Vietnam. I knew immediately that he would be a perfect travel companion and invited him along on my next trip- a month backpacking in Bali, Indonesia. He was crazy enough to say yes and we haven't stopped planning trips together ever since. We've been full-time traveling since 2018- even through the pandemic. But our life on the road is far from luxurious. “In our two-year trip around the world, we started in Mexico and headed south to Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. We didn't have a plan when we went on a trip around the world. I had a vision board with pictures of places I'd like to see and just tried to see as many as possible. That's the beauty of long-term travel; you don't need a plan. It was amazingly liberating to take it day by day; stay in a place we liked a lot and move elsewhere when we felt otherwise. We didn't have to worry about having a certain amount of vacation days or hurrying up to go sightseeing. We stayed in each country for 2-4 weeks, so we had enough time to get to know its people and culture and visit the most beautiful places. After South America, we flew to New Zealand, where we secured work visas to top up our travel fund. After 7 months of working, we traveled around the country for about 2 months before moving on to Indonesia, India, and Europe. We've visited Slovakia for a few months to see friends and family and road-tripped around Slovenia, Italy, and Austria. “I had always loved traveling but found I never really had the time to do it. After having an epic honeymoon in Hawaii, I decided to start an Instagram account to share some of my photography and to get inspired by other accounts to travel more. “I started rock climbing in college and fell in love with the outdoors. I loved going camping and hiking around Texas while rock climbing. I never had a chance to explore outside when I was young, so this was a new and fantastic experience for me. Rock climbing was a little too intense for me. I was afraid of heights, so I eventually decided that was not the route for me. One of my favorite adventures I have ever been on was backpacking the W Trek in Torres Del Paine National Park in Chile. The trek was so long and brutal, and it took so many days to complete, but I am happy I did it! The hike was filled with some of the most insane mountains I have ever seen and glaciers, bright blue lakes, wildlife, and more. It was an insane adventure. Just getting to the national park took us three days! It is so remote. An adventure that has been on my bucket list for a while is hiking the Dolomites in Italy. I was supposed to go in 2019 but unfortunately couldn’t. Then you know what happened in 2020, so we had to push it back even more. I am hoping we can finally go in September 2022. "We met while studying at the University of Virginia. Immediately after graduating, we both found typical office jobs and lived the standard 9 to 5 city life. We’d always loved to travel and hike, but never dreamed we could do it permanently. That is until the COVID19 pandemic forced the world to shut down, and after a year stuck inside the walls of our apartment, we decided to sell most of our belongings, pack up what was left, and hit the road! “I have always loved the outdoors since I was young. It was one of the reasons I took up Geology at university. Geologists work outdoors a lot. My profession lets me travel to non-touristic but beautiful places that I probably wouldn’t have been able to go to if not for my profession. When I started working, I would go on trips with friends. But the time came when I couldn’t find people to travel with because of their work schedules. That’s when I decided to travel solo, and I enjoyed the flexibility. From then on, I no longer ask people to join me. I just go on trips on my own. Traveling solo and going on adventures on my own makes me feel empowered. I have plenty of memorable trips, but the most memorable would be when I went backpacking for six weeks in some parts of Southeast Asia. I’ve experienced a lot of things like going on a slow boat journey in the Mekong River for two days, having thanaka on my face, and feeding the elephants. I learned a lot of things about the countries I visited, and I met a lot of travelers who were doing the same.” The girl, telling her story is Tina (@tnadeperalta) who was tired of waiting around for her friends, so she decided to tackle the world solo and she hasn't looked back since. “The story of how we met always makes people smile. Both scientists by trade, we worked for the same global scientific company but on opposite sides of the Atlantic. For years we had spoken on conference calls regularly but had never met in person. That would all change when Mark was sent to the US lab Kristen was working in. There was instant chemistry (forgive our science pun) and a series of trans-Atlantic flights followed. Each time, we would tag on a new country or city to visit together, further fueling our desire to travel. Eventually, we were at a crossroads. Travel was always a huge part of our relationship and friends would joke with us about which country we were in at the time. We had great careers but we both wanted more out of life. After working in the corporate environment for almost a decade, we realized our travel dreams were at a now-or-never moment. We weren’t getting any younger and the world was waiting, so we took a risk. Quitting our jobs was frightening but liberating. We temporarily threw everything we owned into storage, hung up our lab coats, got married, traveled to over 35 countries across 4 continents together, and never looked back.” Mark and Kristen Morgan are two scientists on the hunt for adventure who grew up on opposite sides of the Atlantic.
